STTNG - 6/10 (so far, but gradually getting better) so I'm nearly 20 years late to the party

There Will Be Blood 8.5/10 I finally got to see this, been wanting to for ages. Excellent movie. Almost a great movie - I can't put my finger on the reason that it isn't, but it misses by just a little bit.

I've started to re-watch it on Netflix and I'm wondering if I should just stop and get the remastered Blu-Ray sets.

Season 1 is pretty horrible

Worst individual episode was the last one from season 2.

I'll never forget the awful TNG pilot episode - space jellyfish sex LOL.

I also remember hating on Wesley Crusher, which is funny now since Wil Wheaton turned out to be a pretty cool dude.

I'm having trouble getting into TNG as well. It's so fricking dated.

I've stalled around the mid-point of season 1. iirc The last episode I watched was the one where they find JLP's old ship and the Ferengi dude tries to mind control him, or something.

Should I keep soldiering on? I swore to myself I'd watch it all some day.

Yes. That pilot episode was terrible. The series got much better after Gene Roddenberry left. Every episode he was involved in was terrible, IMO. Most were re-hashed from TOS (which re-hashed its own plots even in back-to-back episodes).

[edit]
Halfway through TOS season 1, I lost count of how many encounters they had with an entity or crew member with god-like powers.

That was always a terrible plot until the later TNG episodes featuring Q (like the series finale).

Yes. By the time you get to episodes featuring the Borg, you will have seen many excellent episodes.

All Is Lost - 9/10: Robert Redford trapped at sea for nearly two hours. Amazing stuff as long as you are cool with only having one actor and maybe 50 words of spoken dialogue throughout the entire film. I loved it. Definitely in my Top 10 of the year so far.

I meant to post about this--or did I and I forgot? or maybe somewhere else?

Awesome flick.

Nice.

It was pretty damn tense. I actually let out an audible "oh god" in the theatre, which I never, ever do.

Europa Report 10/10

A trip to one of Jupiter's moons, produced with input from NASA to make the most plausible and realistic space journey. This is a character driven film which may make it 'dry' for those needing giant robots and explosions, but if you are interested in space and want to take a look at what a journey further than humans ever went before might look like - don't miss this.

Just ran across this thread.

Quite a spread on reviews, which is to be expected - a lot can be based on context.

More 10's than I'd expect, but I guess I'm a bit tougher as far as that goes - have to think quite a bit on a Movie I'd give that too.

Having said that, here's a few to just plain stay away from:

Battle of Los Angeles (note this in NOT Battle: Los Angeles) 0/10.
This is a SyFy Channel rip off of Battle: Los Angeles, (which is how I came across it), and has got to be one of if not the worst Movie I have ever seen.

Lost in Translation 1/10
Boring, totally predictable, and pointless Movie. Only reason it gets a 1 is for Bill Murray.

Sucker Punch 1/10
While there are some nice visuals (1), the plot is a disjointed mess, and the twist at the end leaves the viewer with the feeling that they've been "Sucker Punched".

Speed Racer (Movie) 0/10
I tried, but I couldn't even watch more than 15-20 minutes of this nightmare.

.

Lol mate, you need to watch some better movies....I would turn anything lower than a 4 off!

Just looked at my top 100 and pulled out the horror:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
Repulsion
The Shining
Martyrs
The Fly
Videodrome - I love Cronenberg's body horror
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
The Thing (82)
Black Christmas - I also really like slasher flicks and this is probably my favourite one

Could also see Angst, Wolf Creek, and The Hills Have Eyes remake. Those are all good.

I don't know, everyone likes different stuff, except for me, I love horror of all kinds.

Gravity in 3D - 9/10

Took the GF to see it a few weeks ago and it left a bit of a mark on me. This was the first movie that I've seen in the theater in quite some time. The director did an excellent job of making you feel very alone in space with the characters along with the vastness of it. It also came with some very interesting first/third person views that I'm still trying to figure out how they were shot. I thought the opening sequence was one of the best that I've ever seen.

The writer's strike at the time forced a "flashback" episode.

Skip ahead to the point where Riker gets a beard. That's when it started getting good.

Pacific Rim (Robot Jox Part 2 Now We Have Money) 7/10
Once you get past that it is dumb as hell and just enjoy it for what it is big ass robots fighting big ass monsters it is pretty good. Doesn't hurt that the real hero of the movie IMO is Charlie from Always Sunny . The only downer to me was the sappy ending.

Populaire (2012)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populaire_%28film%29
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6upoz9I7eg (Trailer)

Set in 1958–1959, Populaire focuses on Rose Pamphyle (Déborah François), who lives with her widowed father and is destined to marry a son of the local mechanic. Rose travels out of town and applies for a secretarial job with an insurance agency run by Louis Échard (Romain Duris). Louis learns that Rose can type with extraordinary speed and he tells her to compete in a speed-typing competition if she wants the job. Louis then begins training Rose to become the fastest typist in the world.
Nice take on those days when speed-typing on a typewriter (not a computer keyboard) was a skill.
