X-Men Days of Future Past 7.5/10

Granted I missed X-Men The Last Stand (which everyone says this movie resolves), but I just didn't like XMDOFP all that much. It has great effects and you get to oogle Jennifer Lawrence in blue bodypaint, which are good things. But the story is basically Terminator 1 sausage in an X-men casing.

Good fun, to be sure. But I personally didn't think it was better than X-Men First Class or the original X-Men.

Also, I'm just going to come out and say it. Peter Dinklage sucked. And this is coming from someone who generally admires Dinklage's acting skills. At least insofar as they extend to playing a praternizing, witty sardonic dwarf.

X-Men Days of Future Past: I'd give it a 9/10. Never seen an X-men film before, but this definitely wasn't geared towards kids. I enjoyed it.

American Hustle: 4/10. Boring, didn't like the characters or the story. Seemed to go on forever and wasn't the least bit interesting.

Ted - 6.5/10 - I'm a fan of pretty much everything associated with this movie, but it just fell flat for me. Hoping A Million Ways to Die in the West does not disappoint too.

Rio 2 - 6.2/10 - Awesome: my son getting old enough to sit through a movie. Not awesome: he likes things like Rio 2. I actually didn't mind Rio 1, but Rio 2 was a downgrade. ADD on the conflicts, would have preferred the antagonist from the first be featured more instead of
the humans or rival flock
.

Don Jon - 7.4/10 - Scarlet did a pretty good job getting into character, I thought she was completely revolting from the very beginning lol (that accent, ugh). Tony Danza was awesome in his small role. Some of the movie was a bit hyperbolized as expected, but a decent chunk was pretty raw and real too. Better than I expected.

It's getting destroyed in reviews, and i'm certain rightfully so.
Seth MacFarlane isn't really that funny, but thinks he is, which results in the crap he makes...

Tried to see this on Sunday but it was sold out. Re-watched X-Men: First Class the night before and everything just to get ready. Hoping to see it this upcoming weekend.

KT

If you like the X-men world, you'll love this movie.
Pretty easily the best of all of them IMHO.

Honestly i think the bar for future superhero movies has been set really high with Captain America: Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Not sure if the upcoming Avengers can possibly attain that level, and while i've not seen it, it sounds like the rebooted Spidey 2 was crap.

Watched Godzilla with my cousin today and wow the movie sucked hard imo. The original sucked too and so did the remake. It's plan old boring predictable plots. They picked the wrong actors for sure. When the movie was over the crowd shouted 'BOO!' that sumed up everything.

Although if you like your power rangers then this movie should be good to go. I give this movie 2.5/10.

Haters come at me! Tehehehe ^_^

I saw Godzilla a couple of nights ago and had a great time. Couldn't disagree more. Tons of fun (pun intended).

Your 2.5/10 puzzles me, but then you say the original sucked too. Assuming you are talking about the 1954 original, your taste in movies is suspect. I'd avoid monster movies in the future if I were you.

Actually the Godzilla movie is lacking Godzilla. It would have been nice for him to be in it for more than like ten minutes in total.

I could have used a bit more Godzilla myself, like a little longer battle at the end. I didn't mind Godzilla not showing up for so long because I thought it built up suspense well.

Still, a tardy Godzilla doesn't make the movie a 2.5/10 by a long shot.

Yea, it looked very promising from the previews/clips, but I rented it when it came out and it turned out to be one of those movies that had almost all of the funny shit in the previews.

IIRC the first 30 minutes of the movie was good, then the rest of the movie was almost no comedy, or even comedic attempts. Like a dreaded 1 hour or so of shitty drama. I literally saw it the day it became available for rent, which was probably like a year ago, so my memory may be a little off. I can definitely say it was extremely disappointing.

3/10 - Ted

Just checked IMDB and I have no explanation for how Ted is sitting at a 7.1 other than fanboys voting.

Death Wish 10/10

A classic that still holds up well.

I watched it a few weeks ago, and it does. #3 and #4 are on Netflix, too. I think it is #4 that is hilarious; he gets a feeder machine gun and just starts shooting up streets full of thugs at some point.

I was referring to A Million Ways to Die in the West being terrible.

Ted wasn't that bad. Certainly not good, but not terrible.

A Million Ways to Die in the West, on the other hand, sounds so awful from the reviews i have zero interest in ever seeing it.

Goodbye World 3/10
Apocalyptic movie centered around a yuppie douchebag family that have turned survivalists and their douchebag yuppie friends that happen to show up. It could have been an interesting movie if I liked anybody but they stuck to their douchebaggery ways after the shit hit the fan. All they did was bitch, moan, and fight with each other over stupid shit the whole time. Besides that it was rather boring.

I kinda liked it, but it definitely lacked direction.
There were a lot of good looking characters but yeah, not so likeable, i'd agree.

I gave it a 6/10.

Non-stop -- 6/10 Wasn't really sure what to expect in this movie, it was ok. I really hope Liam Neeson doesn't just start doing these half-actiony crap movies for a paycheck. I haven't seen Taken 2 so I'm not sure how that was (have NOT heard good things), but the last couple of his movies I watched I just wasn't overly impressed with (The Grey, Battleship). I really really hope A Million Ways to Die in the West reverses his course.

Short Term 12 -- 7/10 A little slow, but was actually pretty good. I thought they did a great job making the situations feel very real.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty -- 8/10 One of the better movies I've watched recently, I really liked it (which is odd for me, because I don't like Ben Stiller).

12 Years A Slave -- 7/10 I don't think this lived up to the hype at all. Yes, the performances were awesome, but with the number of awards it won, I was expecting better. I don't see it.

42 -- 8/10 Might be rated a little high, but I have a soft spot for sports movies, that's just how it is. I'm not entirely sure how the story unfolded in real life, so I can't vouch for its historical accuracy. I do think the guy playing Jackie Robinson did an excellent job, and oddly, I wasn't bothered by Harrison Ford in this one.

I think that's all I have for now...

Secret Life of Walter Mitty - 8/10 - Agree with this. I wasn't expecting much, and since it starred Ben Stiller, who is hit or miss with me as well I was pleasantly surprised.

If nobody hears from me over the next few weeks it's because last night I took my first hit of the drug known as "Breaking Bad".

Will start a long bender of binging on 5 seasons of that.

Do post your thoughts. I tend to think that the best modern, serialized TV dramas are in many ways more interesting than movies at this point (obviously a story arc over the course of several seasons allows for a lot more character development and plotting than a 2-3 hour film), and to my tastes Breaking Bad is the finest of these shows. I'm sure you've probably seen Anthony Hopkins' thoughts on Breaking Bad - http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2013/10/anthony-hopkins-breaking-bad-fan-letter - but he says it with a lot more credibility than I ever could:

Dear Mister Cranston.

I wanted to write you this email - so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber - I take it we are both represented by UTA . Great agency.

I've just finished a marathon of watching "BREAKING BAD" - from episode one of the First Season - to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. [Ed note: There are in fact five seasons of Breaking Bad; this might have been wishful thinking.] (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.

I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!

Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen - ever.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I've sort of lost belief in anything really.

But this work of yours is spectacular - absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers.... every department - casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

If you ever get a chance to - would you pass on my admiration to everyone - Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada - everyone - everyone gave master classes of performance ... The list is endless.

Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.

You and all the cast are the best actors I've ever seen.

That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It's almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.

Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.

Best regards

Tony Hopkins.

Ted wasn't too bad. Paul was pretty much the exact same movie but better, but Ted was still okay. It had some funny parts in it.

That letter from Hopkins is so true, about everything. About the brilliance of Breaking Bad and all the other smoke blowing and BS in the whole entertainment business. BB is one shining exception compared to the rest of the mediocrity

Blue Jasmine - 5/10.

Woody Allen has been hit and miss for some time now, and this one was a miss.

The last one, Midnight in Paris - if I recall the name correctly - was quite good.
