The moral was they were looking for outside the box thinkers compared to the cookie cutter everyone has to do everything exactly "this" way that is so common these days. Because, even though Google is known (supposedly) for innovation and thinking outwardly, that too begins to become the norm and stagnates creativity.

Fred - 0/10

Jesus christ, wtf is this garbage? It is a mix between the worst, weirdest and most annoying movie I have ever seen. How I randomly ended up watching this movie and somehow made it through is a mystery.

I've missed some.

Here are a few I've seen recently:

Jiro Dreams of Sushi - (Netflix) Good. Makes me want to try his food. I was falling asleep though.

Edge of Tomorrow - (Theater, 2D) Good. Interesting. I thought the ending could have been better though.

Noah - Bad. What a waste of time. I usually love Darren Aronofsky (spelling?) films.

Bernie is on Netflix. It's absolutely excellent. One of my favorite movies. WATCH IT TONIGHT IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN IT. If you have seen it, find someone that hasn't and watch it again.

Klondike - 8.3/10 - 3x2hr Discovery miniseries about the Klondike gold rush. Positives: I thought really good acting from a bunch of the cast, esp for made-for-tv. Tim Roth made a decent antagonist. Some great nature environments. Good character development. Negatives: Expected pacing issues due to commercials and episode breaks. Really could have used an R-treatment, that place was brutal.

Planes: Fire and Rescue - 6.5 - Not terrible, not awesome. Typical predictable plot. Protagonist not really that endearing. I liked a lot of the flying scenes, just pleasing to watch the 'flow' (hard to describe).

Moneyball - 7/10

I'm not real sure why people are so high on this movie. The film is well made, the acting is fine. It stays true to the real life story which is where the problem lies, there is just not enough to justify a 2+ hour movie. The plot is as straight forward as it goes. Still a decent flick but I think it is overhyped.

Chrysalis-- 8/10

Zombie flick with 3 actors you've never seen before. I was thoroughly engrossed the whole way thru it. It was low budget but it felt real. Some good acting and the zombies were pretty fucking scary to be honest.

Totally recommend.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:
Extremely solid, though it has about two groan-worthy movie tropes. The rest is just skillful movie making on all fronts. Despite the setting ripe for it, they don't go over the top with the scenario/action and they don't stoop to using tired clichés. They set up a believable conflict without taking the easy way out. There is no good side and bad side and there is no preachy message about defying our evil human nature. Very well done.

Edge of Tomorrow 6/10. Worth a watch, but nothing spectacular. A bit like Ground hog day, but with action instead of comedy and not as good.

300 rise of an empire - 8/10 - i really enjoyed this movie and how it tied into the original 300 movie. i thought the style of this movie was awesome as well. i just wished they had more battles on land than always on the water, but it was still cool. i also wish the guys looked more jacked than they did, but i do realize they weren't spartan warriors so it also kind of makes sense.

lego movie - 7/10 - i was not a fan at all of the first 30-45 minutes of this movie. i hated all of the singing and it felt like the movie was just in ADD mode with stuff going on and happening all over the place for what seemed like no reason. but the 2nd half of the movie was a lot of fun and i really did enjoy it. i also liked the "twist" towards the end of the movie.

I went and saw The Purge: Anarchy earlier today, and I wasn't expecting much from it. However, I did suspect that I'd feel similar about it as I did Non-Stop, and I did. It'll probably keep you entertained while watching it, but most of the characters don't matter. They just did a poor job at introducing some of the characters. I'd probably give it the same 6/10.

how would you compare the new purge movie to the original? i thought the original had an awesome premise, but i thought the movie was terrible. i think i gave it like a 2/10 in this thread.

World War Z: 7.5/10 - I find it funny that things happen exactly how you expect them to - a lot of cliches but still a fairly good movie.

The Lone Survivor 7/10 - I liked the book much more and suggest getting it or on audio book. The movie is still fairly decent and follows the book well - but it just isn't the same.

The problem with this movie is that the book isn't cliche. The movie is also almost, but not quite, exactly unlike the book.

who gives a shit if it's like the book or not? i find it amusing when people cry because a movie isn't 100% like the book. if you want the story from the book, read the book. if you want the story from the movie, watch the movie.

for me personally, any movie version is better than any book version.

completely agree

Don't completely agree--it's just too situational. To me, they are just different content, and should be examined for what they individually are. Oftentimes, a movie can fail trying too much to be like the book source, because the creators somehow don't realize that they should be making a film. I guess attempts to appease fans/unwilling to jettison content that just doesn't work on film. Things like that.

Or, the films are far better for jettisoning all that useless crud and re-imagining the characters as interesting, conflicted individuals (LoTR is my favorite example for this)

The OP complained that the movie was cliche. I was pointing out was that the book was not cliche, and that the movie had to go out of it's way to remove a lot of the originality that was in the book.

I suspect it is because Hollywood decided it had to be dumbed-down the non-reader audience.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/...rea_n_5626658.html?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063

Stand Clear of the Closing Doors - hadn't heard of till now

The Pretty One - now in my watchlist; i'd seen the trailer but forgotten about.
Looks interesting.

In a World - been meaning to watch this forever, know it's well-regarded, just need to get around to watching.

Paradise - does not look very good

The Kings of Summer - great movie; definitely you should watch

The Motel Life - looks not bad, hadn't heard of it

Celeste & Jesse Forever - i quite enjoyed this one

Hello I Must Be Going - hmm, looks a lot like the plot from The Lifeguard but not at all as good (this being my opinion only as i loved The Lifeguard)

Cairo Time - May check this out; looks good.

Ira & Abby - not for me, doesn't look very promising

Okay it's been a while since i posted my recent views here

300: Rise of an Empire - 7/10
Expected a bad movie, but was pleasantly entertained.

Under the Skin - 9/10
Best thing i've seen in 2014.
Absolutely surreal movie like no other film i have ever seen before.
So hard to put into words the experience that viewing this movie is, but it's incredible.

The Lego Movie - 7/10
A fun movie, but not really a big fan overall.

Snowpiercer - 9/10
Bizarrely entertaining ride. Such an interesting movie to watch.

Divergent - 5/10
Ugh. So much ugh.
Honestly this doesn't even deserve 5/10 as there are countless issues with every aspect of this movie.

Noah - 5/10
Aronofsky has made some amazing films.
This is far from them IMHO.
Sure, there's not a lot of sourse material, but he took wild liberties with the story, and i don't think a single one of those liberties was a good one; rather they made me dislike the movie even more.

Lucy - 6/10
I thought maybe Luc Besson could do something with this.
Nope.
I was okay with accepting the initial preposterous premise, but it continued to push forward more insane concepts all the way through.
Fun stuff to watch, and ScarJo was good with what she was given to work with. But everything else... D:

I thought Under the Skin was trying too hard (and obvious) to be both artsy and from the 70's Kubrick. It was decent, but my score would be more around 7/10. I gave it a point for bucking the norm of today's movies, but it wasn't anything new really or unique.

I thought the sound design alone was unique, plus the way Glazer blended the real people with actors worked in a very interesting way.
