Captain America: The Winter Soldier -- 6/10
It was ... bleh. Both my wife and I found the intricacies of story hard to follow -- the who and why mostly. Seemed a bit over the top, even for a superhero movie. It was good, or I guess even great, if you're expecting a lame-o action flick, but in my opinion it didn't live up to the Marvel standards that we've seen thus far. +1 point for Scarlett Johansson.
Chef -- 8/10
Just a good movie. That's all I can really say. Sofia Vergara didn't have a huge role, but it was kinda nice to see her being not-obnoxious instead of the way she is on Modern Family.
Bad Words -- 7/10
Had some funny moments. Felt bad for the kid throughout, so they got me there. Worth a watch.
Neighbors -- 8/10
Almost shut it off after 10-15 minutes because it wasn't funny at all. So glad I didn't, the rest of the movie was a blast. Perhaps that makes me incredibly immature, I don't know. I thought it was hilarious.
Other Notes
Suits has gotten a bit better as this season has progressed. It would seem the
Forceman bit is over, as is the SEC thing maybe? The preview for next week seemed like it had nothing to do with any of that, so that's my guess. Definitely looks like they're going to start something new with Mike and leave a cliffhanger to get you to come back for the next half-season.
Franklin & Bash started again last night, but didn't get a chance to watch it. Looking forward to it, that's like my lawyer-version of Castle. It's just a fun show you can pretty much pick up at any time and enjoy it.
Started a series on Netflix called Long Way Round with Ewan McGregor. It's a documentary about him and a friend deciding to motorcycle around the world -- starting in the UK and ending in NY. First two episodes were pretty lame since it was all about planning and (in my opinion) unnecessary focus on self-defense training and stuff. /shrug. The third episode was excellent, however, and I'm now looking forward to finishing the series.
Guardians of the Galaxy - 10/10
Hands-down the best movie I've seen this year, theater or otherwise. Saw it at a local independent theater, and unfortunately the sound setup was a bit lacking in the lows ... I can't wait to get this on bluray to watch at home.
The movie itself was quite funny and had plenty of action throughout. I normally have a problem with CGI characters in live-action films, but Rocket and Groot were so well done that I never noticed -- it just seemed so natural.
Highly recommended.
Human Planet - 10/10
I previously rated this 10/10 but was only an episode in at that point. I just finished the series this weekend, and that rating stands. My favorite episodes were oceans (episode 1), mountains (episode 5), grasslands (episode 6), and rivers (episode 7). The scenery was very nice throughout the series. My only complaint really is that the last episode -- Cities -- seemed like it was tacked on just to get to 8 episodes. Other than that one, this is a must-watch series.
180° South - 7/10
Available on Netflix Instant. Follows a guy and some friends as they head out on a rock climbing / surfing adventure. They basically just go, and this documentary shows the trials and misfortunes along the way. Enjoyed the scenery here, film was decent. Probably worth a watch.
The Ultimate Wave Tahiti - 2/10
Available on Netflix Instant. First off, should have hired a professional narrator. This guy was incredibly boring and sounded like he was completely emotionless. The island scenery was nice, but this doc was pretty awful overall ... just people surfing. Completely forgettable, not worth your time.
Frozen - 7.7/10 - Fine for Disney. Some of the plot 'twists' felt pretty ham-handed (ex. the
betrayal by Hans
). But overall it was decent and my kid seems to love it. Songs are catchy.
End of Watch - 7.5/10 - Gritty and unglamorous, which was very appropriate. I missed having a single plot thread get developed, but thats more typical of real life and not hollywood storytelling so I can appreciate it.
Godzilla (1998) - 4.8/10 - Really bad. Terrible casting of Broderick for the lead. No development of any characters. Pretty much everything was typecast & predictable.
Sweetwater 6/10
Western revenge flick. Kind of slow at the start but picks up near the end. Well shot and has a couple interesting characters in it, crazy religous dude and crazy sheriff. Netflix streaming
Special when Lit A Pinball Documentary 6/10
CARPET RACERS: A Crash Course 6.5/10
Both docs Carpet Racers being about people racing radio controlled cars. Always like watching these docs on people way into something most people know little to nothing about. I've watched Pinball ones before but this was my first RC doc. Never new people could do this profesionally as their only job. Amazon Prime for both.
transcendence - 5/10 - just felt the movie was kind of all over the place and it just felt to be trying too hard, and while i know it's a sci-fi movie, the technology in the movie just seemed very far fetched for the time period. i dunno, just something about it i didn't really enjoy but i can't put my finger on it
rio 2 - 7/10 - fun movie and i think i actually liked it more than the first one. i just wasn't a big fan of all of the singing in the movie so i docked at least a point for that, although i will admit i did like some of the songs. overall i just thought it was a fun movie, even though it was extremely predictable.
The Hunt - 9/10
Tells a story of how a lie can unravel a community as well showing the unraveling of the innocent man whom is the victim of the lie. Well done story and the characters grip you the whole way. It's a movie you'll remember.
Flame and Citron - 9/10
Story of 2 saboteurs who kill Nazi's during WW2 as part of a resistance group.
The Crucible - 5/10 Had a hard on for Daniel Day Lewis so ordered a bunch of his movies. I couldn't get through the first 30 minutes of this. I thought it was just horrible.

This was summarized for me, not sure I will watch it.
Mads is interesting--it seems he has the same type of contract with Denmark that Depardieu has with France--it seems that not a single film can be made in their respective countries without their respective participation.

I saw Edge of Tomorrow on the weekend and thought it was a hell of a lot of fun. Definitely had a few holes and the very end was a bit confusing, but overall fun and surprisingly funny. Cruise and Blunt were both freaking awesome and this may be the first time I actually enjoyed Bill Paxton. 9/10.
I'd rate it about the same as I would the first Thor movie, or pretty much any of the recent Marvel movies, 6 or 7 out of 10. A little better than Winter Soldier. I think after watching films in the comic book genre that raised the bar, the recent Marvel films just come off as second class IMO.
My only problem with this film is a pretty large one. The bad guys disappear somehow for ~5000 years. In that time, Asgard (sp?)'s combat abilities haven't improved, despite them apparently being the enforcers of peace in the universe? I think the script writers could have done a much better job in this respect, this simply isn't plausible.
If I'm going to nitpick, the tech of the Dark Elves must be pretty damn amazing to not need a shedload of maintenance after sitting idle for 5000 years. I also guess they must have found a pretty decent parking space / hiding place for their ships not to have been destroyed either through cosmic accident or being found by their various enemies (ie. everyone in the galaxy).
Why did Odin's father say that the aether and Dark Elves had been destroyed? Wouldn't he want to want to leave some sort of clue, e.g. "PS - we never did find the body of their leader"?
sabotage - 4/10 - thought it was going to be more action than what was in the movie. it also just felt all over the place, like it had no pace at all and not much cohesion. just thought it was going to be a different movie. definitely forgettable and probably wouldn't recommend to even watch this once.
Because most of the hooks were more or less spoiled, and, I'd gone through a series of small, Danish personal dramas some years ago. Not terribly appealing to me now (feel like watching one or tow is enough). :/

Saw this was highly recommended so I decided to watch it last night. I made it about half way, or whenever it was when they made it to the water train car. I skipped and fast forwarded my way the rest of the way just to see the end.
I guess I just didn't get this movie cause I thought it was horrible. Ridiculous fucking plot/story and I just did not see why people are raving about it. Oh well.
Low budget, nearly amatur, slasher flick. The characters, and the acting, is so bad that you are rooting for the killer, just so they will stop talking. The problems this show has is that the killer is not interesting and the deaths are not fun when it happens. One of the main characters even dies off camera. Also, while the show features 3 girls that are in bikinis most of the show, and they keep talking about their boobs, they never actually get around to showing them, even going so far as having a awkwardly edited shower scene that never shows anything.
I'm a fan of bad horror flicks, but Troma would have been ashamed of this one. I think 3 out of 10 is being generous.
