Whiplash (2014) 6/10

Rotten Tomatoes has this as rated 8.6 by the professional reviewers. This boggles my mind, having watched it last night. My thinking was that it was more than a little egregiously over the top. A lot of things happened that beg the question, why didn't so and so say [whatever]? The script, while witty as hell, certainly, was highly preposterous at times. The movie seemed to be trying to trump itself as it went along,
just how overbearing and contemptably abusive of his power could this Fletcher guy be? Stick around and find out. Well, TBH I was wondering when the damn thing would end by midway through it. Do you really think that this is the way that things go in the world of jazz orchestras on any level? Maybe in some degree at times, yes, and what goes on behind closed doors noone sees, but this movie takes all that too far. The scenes where the protagonist abuses himself (I'm not talking about sex here, there's no sex in this movie at all, except in the frequent gratuitous verbal onslaughts coming from Fletcher), are likewise way way over the top.

If you fall for all of this, too bad.

To each his own.

Of course my opinion of your opinion has dropped a bit, not that it matters in reality

On a side note I did not even know that they were making a new Jurassic Park movie until I saw the commercial for it last week.

Does anyone else think that it is going to be a major letdown? To me it looks like just another CGI crapfest. I doubt Spielberg will show anything all that crazy with the movies PG-13 rating.

I'm skeptical.

I drug the wife to the first one at a DTS theater as I think it was brand new at the time, against her wishes, and she became a Jurrasic Park fanatic after that.

I think she want's to see it just from that, personally I think it might be better than the last few attempts.

I'm exciting about it. I can't wait to see it. the commercials looked great.

Kingsman 7/10 Doesn't quite pull you in. and that lisp jackson was doing was annoying as helll.

I thought it was great. the church scene was amazing.

Any comment on the poltergeist remake?
Not the same jump factor as the original, but at least the movie wasn't a word for word carbon copy either.
More entertaining than horror.
I think it held its own.

Gone Girl (2014) 7.8/10

Pretty entertaining movie that makes you wonder where it's going, not something I do as much as a lot of folks, but this one forces you to, being mostly a mystery. Half way through I kept thinking "this must have been written by a man." Toward the end I wasn't as certain and I was surprised to find it was written by a woman. Gets better as it gets closer to the end, I think, not something you see in a lot of films. Many have noted the plot holes, and it's true there are several, but I think they are minor as those go and they could have fixed that stuff, just didn't bother.

Wow. Tomorrowland. What a bomb. Ka-BOOM!
What a hodgepodge of sci-fi mess.
George Clooney? Really?
That alone is enough to put the audience to sleep. And it did.
More like some low budget Disney TV movie at best.
I actually liked Mad Max better, and thats not saying much.

And I'm not alone.

Holiday Box Office Lowest Since 2001.
Tomorrowland’ from Disney was a big disappointment.

The key reason for the empty multiplexes was the weak performance of “Tomorrowland,” the weekend’s sole new big-budget movie and a rare misfire for Walt Disney Co. Borrowing its title from an area at Disneyland but featuring an original story, the science-fiction film garnered mixed reviews and opened to an estimated $41.7 million over the four-day holiday weekend.
Last year, “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” grossed $110.6 million on Memorial Day weekend. The prior year, “Fast & Furious 6” opened to $97.4 million.

I was going to see Tomorrowland, but the opening showing on Thursday was an actual midnight showing unlike the usual 7 or 8 PM showings. Every review for the movie that I've seen complains about the last third just feeling completely contrived, but should you expect anything better when Damon Lindelof is one of the writers?

Fury Road? Assuming so, how could you say that? You must've downloaded it.

Why didn't you give your opinion of it here?

I really wish competent directors like Ridley Scott and Brad Bird would learn that they should never, ever work with Damon Lindelof.

The Emerald Forest (1985)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emerald_Forest http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089087/reference

Amurican man who builds big power dam in Amazon and damages ecosystem, son gets abducted by natives, becomes one with nature, oh the irony.

I honestly tried, but the fact that practically all the important dialogue of the film is in a weird, possibly made-up amazonian language beggars belief. How this made it out of production i honestly do not know.

Tried my google-fu at subtitles, or translations, but failed. Possibly doesn't exist.

In light of this, 4/10.

Dawg Fight (Netflix) 4/10 - From the makers of Cocaine Cowboys they explore back yard fighting in Miami and follow a group of fighters some of which make it to minor league MMA matches.

Really lacked anything that I would consider to make it a "documentary". It really was just "Hey look at these guys beat each other's face in a yard". Wasn't impressed. I really want to give it a 2 but while this movie bad, there are far far worse.

Daredevil (Netflix series) episodes 1-4: 6/10 -Maybe it gets better, but it isn't anything special so far. Aside from Rosario's nipples poking out, the only other thing of interest is how offended Russian Americans have to be at how they are portrayed by Hollywood. Any gang related activity in movies and shows are almost always Eastern European. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are plenty of terrible people that happen to be eastern Europeans, but come on. Also, I hate the "moral dilemma" shows always attempt to use when throwing boxing matches. Oh, I'm sure your pride is really hurt you are taking a dive to provide for your fucking blind kid. Get over it...

The Drop - Gandolfini/Hardy/Rapace 9/10

Never heard of this film, which is surprising considering the talent.

It is a mob-related flick which should be no surprise reading the first name... but, this flick I waited to watch was imo a mix of Primal Fear, Rocky, The Professional, and maybe the Sixth Sense.

Kept me guessing. Great acting. Got it from the library, so not sure it's available on Netflix or streaming... just remember the name and see it. Great movie. Highly recommended.

The Finder (Netflix) (Season 1) 7/10 - Guy has an inexplicable impulse to find missing things for people.

I have no idea why this was cancelled. I mean, it's not great, but it is pretty good and far better than some of the crap that is out there. Really surprised it wasn't picked up by Netflix or Hulu or something, but this was 2012 "back in the day" when the idea of streaming only shows was in its infancy.

Peaky Blinders 8/10 Netflix

This has become one of my favorite TV shows ever, now that I have gotten into it several episodes. I would have rated it even higher, but the thick English accents & colloquialisms are really hard to understand sometimes. Still, even though Mrs Ned & I probably catch only 50% - 60% of what is being said, it's fairly easy to have a general understanding of how the plot is progressing. The production values & acting are top shelf, and the story reminds me a lot of other great gangster shows like the Sopranos, The Godfather, etc. Highly recommended.

My favorite show in a long time. Can't wait for season 3

Mad Max. Saw it at the drive-in with my wife. 5.5/10.

Just not that interesting. Turns out that driving in a STRAIGHT LINE FOR TWO HOURS is only marginally more interesting when there are constant extremely repetitive fight scenes that are obviously sped up movements. Story was hella crazy weak. Very unimaginative or creative. Script was near non-existent but what was there was decent enough.

That being said, costume and set design were outstanding. Really some amazing work done there.
