interesting thought:
would you have watched Fury Road if it wasn't a Max Mad movie?
ie: just another dystopian movie staring Charlize Theon (who I didn't even recognize)

my answer: no, I would not have watched it. it was the Mad Max hype that bought this sheep in

If the trailers were identical, I'd have still seen it. I mean, I saw Book of Eli based on less and that movie made zero fucking sense. The fact that it was a Mad Max movie done by George Miller, I knew it was going to be pretty well done and campy as shit in a dystopian, post apocalyptica adventure.

Sure. I didn't care for Mad Max or The Road Warrior, but I went and saw it because it had a lot of good reviews. I figured that I'd at least give it a shot.

I never watched the original Mad Max movies though I was familiar with some aspects (seeing bits and pieces on TV as a kid). I watched Fury Road in theaters and went back to watch the other movies after that.

Kingsman: The Secret Service - 8.5/10

This movie was a lot of fun. Basically a modern take on James Bond without trying to be dark and serious.

I'm convinced that the Kingsman was a spoof of James Bond movies. It was supposed to be a dry comedy, It felt to me like someone who didn't quite understand the humor was trying to replicate Wes Anderson. Even so, I think it mostly worked.

Ex Machina -- 7/10
It was definitely different, and that was good, but ... it was weird. And kinda creepy. It wasn't bad, and actually was pretty decent, but it's not the type of movie that I'd watch again.

McFarland USA -- 9/10
Feel-good sports movie based on a true story. Had some cheesy dialog in a few spots, but overall was really good.

Your Sister's Sister -- 6/10
Rom-com sort of thing, overall it was probably average for the genre.

The Station Agent -- 8/10
Stars Peter Dinklage back before he was famous for GoT. Had a couple really funny parts, and definitely had the "independent comedy" feel to it. Liked it quite a bit.

Scrotal Recall -- 8/10
Found this series on Netflix, watched 3 of the 6 episodes last night. Probably a bit early to rate fairly, but really liked the episodes last night. Show about a guy that finds out he has chlamydia and then must contact all of his former sexual partners to tell them. Each episode seems to tell the story of how he ended up having sex with the person he's telling. Quite funny.

Yeah in a way it was. The British spy/James Bond tropes was even referenced in the movie by Sam Jackson's character. It was also James Bond cranked up to 11. If you take out the over the top gun fights, I dont think it would be any different than the old Bond films. Although, I 'll admit I havent seen one of those in awhile, but the formula is what I remember.

Black Swan Just picked this up on Blu Ray, hadn't seen it since it came out in 2010. Watching it again reminded me how great it is, amazing movie, so check it out. The Blu Ray is solid as well, really great sound design, and an un-tampered with visual presentation. The 16mm film grain looks wonderful.

Mad Max - 9.5/10
Fucking awesome. Pure testosterone in what we expect from the franchise. The costumes and stunts were meticulously done and amazing to behold. Also a breath of fresh air in our feminized society. We need more Maxes who just stfu and get the job done. No verbose dialogue is necessary. In fact if we lived in a post apocalyptic world, half of our "men" wouldn't be around because they're not mentally tough enough. This movie was a nice reminder that the apocalypse can't come soon enough.

Bellflower 8/10

Thought I'd hate this since it's about two young aimless guys who make flamethrowers and crazy cars (Mad Max theme), but it turned out to be quite good.

Chef 6/10 Jeff Favreau (sp?)

Iron Man's director makes a feel good movie. First half is pretty good, last half is the same as any other similar movie.

The Purge 7/10

Hunger games type rip off, where for 12 hours a year anything goes - you can murder, rob, rape, and it's perfectly legal for those 12 hours. A 'little' bit of an old Carpenter movie feel, and not bad.

A Good Lie 6/10

Produced by Ron Howard, with Reese Witherspoon, about the Lost Boys from Sudan who come to America. Interesting, but it falls short of being the movie it could have been imo.

They still shoot movies in "16mm?"

That sounds like a Star Trek: Original Series episode...the one with Landru.

If you like movies with loud noisy shootouts between the government and religious cults. A cult that believed God gave them the divine right to kidnap gays and kids having sex out of wedlock, torturing the captors, then gruesomely killing them. Cults lead by a weird creepy minister. If you like movies where the cult has a shit load of assault weapons stocked away. Cults not afraid to go up against the government, this movie is right up your alley.
RED STATE. Showing again this Sunday, 6/14 ACMAX (auction max) @ 11:45 pm est.
A strange one.
John Goodman
Michael Parks
Cooper Thornton as Plastic Wrap Man

Lists 2 stars, but don't let that mislead you. This is a weird flick.

The Walking Dead is shot on 16mm.
I had never heard that before, unfortunately it doesn't even look like film in broadcast HD quality.

:Edit: Looking at Blu Ray screencaps it certainly does.

The more I think about it (which is probably too much) the more I dislike Ex Machina. I mean, it was well done, but the entire motivation of the AI and the helper was just moronic. It makes no sense.

It was written and directed by Kevin Smith..completely unlike anything he's done...until Tusk (stars the same guy who plays the preacher in Red State)..which I highly recommend for the WTF level.

The ending of Red State prompted a series of fakes put on youtube that had people not knowing what it was about freaking out.

Chappie 2/10 - This movie was very hard to watch.

They basically took the premise of Short Circuit and Robocop, and then got Hugh Jackman on-board, and then filled the rest of the cast with people from the local trailer park to make this movie.

It's really good.

I started the first season and quickly powered thru it and the second.
Really good show.

What do you mean?
Ava wants to be free, to make her own decisions, and not be tied to anyone (just like any human would want).
It's not entirely clear, but it seems she coerces Kyoko to help her escape. As Kyoko is a simpler model, i don't think she can really do as much thinking for herself (though it's quite evident she can, just not to the extent Ava can).
To me, the ending is absolutely fantastic.
The more i think about Ex Machina, the more i like it.
Watching a movie three times in a week and a half is something i've never ever done with a movie; that's how much it fascinated me.

Last six weeks...

Jupiter Ascending - 6/10
An entertaining mess. Lots of potential that didn't really pan out.

Still Alice - 9/10
Julianne Moore is an amazing actress (obvious statement is obvious).
What a tough movie to watch.

The Theory of Everything - 8/10
Good stuff, but rather overrated.

Avengers: Age of Ultron - 9/10
Ridiculously fun time. Liked it a lot more than i expected to.
Really hope there'll be an ultra extended cut as Whedon could easily have used another hour or so with the large cast.

Ex Machina - 10/10
Almost certainly movie of the year for me. Was beyond mesmerized by it the first time, and promptly went back to see it a couple more times for a total of three viewings in 8 days, a new record for me.
Soundtrack is fucking glorious, LOVE IT

Mad Max: Fury Road - 9/10
What an epic spectacle. Great movie, this one twice in 8 days.
Initially wasn't as big of a fan, but really appreciated it more the second viewing. Max and Furiosa's relationship in this is remarkable.

Chappie - 5/10
Nope. I like Die Antwoord, but i've realized i just really cannot get behind Neill Blomkamp's work anymore.

Blackhat - 5/10
Fucking Mannboys piss me off. This is a preposterously unrealistic boring unfathomable joke.

Kung Fury - 7/10
Roommates said i needed to watch this and i was like, no thanx.
But then i did, and i realized the error of my ways.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS5P_LAqiVg
So much idiotic fun

John Carpenter's Vampires - 4/10
Ugh. Putrid garbage.
Roommate's favorite vampire movie. How. The. Fuck.
I know ONE person IRL that i can somewhat trust for movie advice. The rest of my friends have such bad taste in movies i've learned i need to just smile and nod.

Might go take the kids to Jurassic World.

And man, I need to see Ex Machina.

I'm very cautiously anticipating seeing JW tomorrow night.
Not reading any of the reviews since the embargo lifted this week, but i don't have the greatest feeling (and haven't since the trailers).
Really hoping to be wrong.

Lower your expectations for Ex Machina.
I absolutely love it, but it seems my opinion is very far to one side while there are a fair number who aren't very enamored. Average is probably somewhere in between. Good but not great.

For me it just apparently hits all the checkboxes that i don't even know i have.
Hard to fully explain.
