Have never watched that one myself to be honest.

6.5 for something you ejected 1/4 of the way through seems a bit lenient though myself.
Dood, did you read my post? I didn't eject, I just thought to myself I bet this gets scary violent.
I watched it to the end. It's Altman, had some good performances. Elliot Gould reminds me of Tom Waits many times in this. The Long Goodbye.

pitch perfect 2 - 3/10 - i'm not a fan of musicals at all, but i did enjoy the first pitch perfect a lot more than i thought. but part 2 was just terrible. i don't think i laughed more than 1 or 2 times the whole movie. just a bad movie.

I thought it was more of the same, but minus the "surprise! this movie is actually good!" element that the first one had. Basically, enjoyable enough, but if I were to rewatch one I'd rewatch the first every time.

Glad you liked it but I really couldn't get into John Wick. The plot is WAY to far fetched for me.
Some dude kills Keanu's dog, and in response he kills (literally) hundreds of people? Seriously?
. <shrug> Maybe I'm just becoming an old fuddy duddy.
Funny, my wife and I totally bought into the premise. Would have been way different had he been, say, a retired plumber, of course. I'd give John Wick a solid 8/10 for what it is.

Trainwreck - .../10 - Honestly, I got 11 minutes in and turned it off. It wasn't funny. Also, I couldn't get over the fact that not only did every male in the greater NYC area wanted to sleep with this woman, but they were instantly smitten with her. Unless the male denizens of NYC have suddenly gotten incredibly desperate, there's no fucking way that fucking would fucking occur. She was even dating John Cena! D: It's one of those times when your mind just can't suspend disbelief.
Even were I minded to watch something starring Amy Schumer - say, in conjunction with cutting myself or autoerotic asphyxiation - that premise is simply way too far out for me.

Weird. What you wrote is perfectly clear, yet I too read it exactly the same as my buddy MongGrel. Great minds misfire alike?

No, speed reading sleep walkers often make the same mistakes. Lemmings follow each other over a cliff. Be warned.

If you say so.

A disjointed, rambling review can have a similar effect, nice that I can say sorry about that and you continue to carry on about it.

Anyway.

Watched all of these episodes recently, enjoyed them myself on Amazon Prime.

8.1/10 myself.

Bosch is looking a bit interesting also, but just started that one.

California Split (Robert Altman, Elliott Gould... 1974) 8/10

The most narratively loose of Robert Altman's '70s films, California Split details the haphazard lives of two compulsive gamblers searching for that ever-elusive big score. Newly single and soon-to-be-unemployed Bill (George Segal) joins live-wire pal Charlie (Elliott Gould), as the pair moves from Fruit Loops with Charlie's hooker roommates Sue (Gwen Welles) and Barbara (Ann Prentiss) to bets on horses, backroom card games, boxing, and basketball. They make it to Reno, but Bill comes to realize … More

Rating: R
Genre: Drama, Classics, Comedy
Directed By: Robert Altman
Written By: Joseph Walsh
In Theaters: Aug 7, 1974 Limited
On DVD Nov 2, 2004
Runtime: 1 hr. 48 min.
Columbia Pictures

A year after they did The Long Goodbye they came up with this. It's a wild caper-romp, usually moves along really fast. The pace changes a lot. Very impressive at times. Uneven, is my feeling, I think Altman's style just gives rise to that. He improvises a lot, allows his cast to work up stuff as they go. With a guy like Gould this is dynamite tactic. Gould seems to have had the party of his life as they made this movie, there's no other way to explain what you are beholding.

Now I remember why I stopped watching this show last year. It's like, weirdness and semi-ominous vagueness for the sake of weirdness and semi-ominous vagueness. Still, the first ep was so good, so spot on and well done, that, this time I'm going to give it a more extended try.
The Leftovers S2 Ep3 -- 4/10
-- I'm currently slogging through my second attempt to watch this ep, in hopes I would encounter some of the magic of ep 1. It's not happening. Mongrel called it sub-Twin Peaks. That sounds about right.

Ha! that description is exactly why I never got around to watching the final episode of the first season. It had, by then, deteriorated into a "background" only diversion for me and I had to go out of my way to click an on-demand request to catch up with the season finally so....too much effort.

No intention of watching this second season, but I did read a piece of a review about the opening episode that now has me intrigued....but it seems the same intentional vagueness for no legitimate reason lingers? bah.

agreed. Violent rampage to eradicate an entire crime syndicate because Theon Greyjoy killed your dog?

Apocalypse: World War II (Netflix) - 8/10

Six part documentary of World War II with mostly color footage, which was nice. I've seen a lot of WWII documentaries and there was plenty of footage here that I hadn't seen before. I don't think it'll be anything particularly revelatory for those familiar with the conflict, at least the general history of it, but it was a nice documentary regardless. Narrated by Martin Sheen.

Oh, and I was impressed by the sound quality. I listen to almost everything through headphones when viewing it on my computer and I thought the sound quality was markedly better than normal, especially the low end.

Bridge of Spies - 7.5/10

Themovie seems slowly paced but it really isn't if you consider the dates when things happen - something the movie doesn't really do a good job of conveying.

It takes you through the trial of the Russian Spy and the negotiations that occurred after Gary Powers was shot down. But the think to realize is that these weren't high level negotiations between equals since neither side wanted to admit any contacts with the other. This fact leads to the most interesting parts of the movie.

This is a well done historical drama which does a wonderful job of highlighting the character of some of the key participants. So watch this more as a documentary or docudrama than anything else.

We just went and saw this last night. Great job recreating Berlin of that time.

My gf was getting legitimately PO'd during Abel's show trial (she works in criminal defense).

Interesting seeing the interrogation techniques used. Basically light sleep deprivation and standing around barking questions. And this when both sides were legitimately afraid of being nuked.

I'd give it a solid 8/10.

Has anyone seen the tv show "Siberia"? It's portrayed as a Survivor type show but in fact it isn't. So it's sort of a fictional show about a reality show.

I'm only on the third episode and want to know if I should keep watching. Because there have been some strange things that have happened, but I'm not sure if that's going to become a central theme.

Beasts of no Nation: 9/10

Finally got around to seeing Netflix's latest piece of original content, and it's good. Really good. Idris Elba is amazing as the lead villain, and the lead child actor is particularly awesome (which is rare). The supporting cast is excellent as well, I loved the guy who played the rebel supreme commander. You only get to see a few minutes of him, but his face and vocal tones just drip with that sort of high-functioning-psychopath evil that honestly creeped me out more than most of the rest of the movie. At the beginning of the movie Idris Elba seems like the embodiment of pure evil, but as it goes on, particularly after he meets with the supreme commander, I got the impression that he was just as brainwashed as the child soldiers beneath him, just at a higher level. The supreme commander was the real deal.

But great acting and writing aside the movie (perhaps sadly), didn't shock me as much as I thought it would. It's a child-soldier's view of a failed sub-Saharan African state. There's depictions of brainwashing, rape, child-rape, execution by machete, drugs, and all manner of horrible things, but the movie shies away from visually depicting the worst of it. For example, a rape scene is cut short (before the physical rape even takes place) by an unexpected act of mercy on the part of our protagonist. The child-rape happens entirely off-screen. It's well established what happened, but all they do is show the child going into a room and then they cut to the child walking back out and spend a lot of time on their reactions. It's well-done, and I'm not saying the movie should have turned into a snuff film or shown gratuitous levels of detail, but it could have depicted the horrors about 10% more to really punch the audience in the gut and help drive its point home. As it stands, if you've seen Blood Diamond and Hotel Rwanda then you've seen virtually everything in Beasts of no Nation, horror-wise. There's just more of it here and no side-plots for relief.

That said, the movie succeeds at what it set out to do in a way that movies like Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond did not. It puts extremely human faces on the people participating in these horrific developing world failed states, and doesn't distract from it when heroic stories or entertaining action. There's plenty of action, but like real wars it's sharp, brutal, and non-cinematic; and there's less of it then you might think. Most of the movie is drama and depicts day-to-day life in these extreme scenarios. Meanwhile the characters are believable, and Beasts of no Nation is unique in its depiction of most people in this conflict, including the child soldiers and their masters, being fundamentally good; just horrifically twisted by circumstance and abuse. Which is refreshing, as I don't think many people outside of Africa have much understanding of the human nature of these conflicts, and it's all too tempting to just write them off as the actions of underdeveloped savages, even if no one is allowed to say "savage" anymore.

just woke up dreaming of the film Infini (2015)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3327624/reference

yes i will agree there are many faults in this film; it mostly feels like everyone involved tried really hard and put their best in, but somehow, they were all new to filmmaking and so the end result is mediocre. (current IMDb 5.4)

but i like that they tried to tell an intelligent story, and the film is far from pretentious.
also, you don't get much Australian films, so that's a plus.

i'll edge my vote a bit and say 6.5: watchable. (despite the *extremely* confusing first scene, which does get explained in the end, btw.)

minor spoilers ahead:

it's a mix between Solaris and Alien, with a bit of zombie-infection going on.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Truth be Told - 7.5/10

There was nothing else on Saturday. Think I saw the end of a previous one in this series. It's a Hallmark or Lifetime movie series thing. Surprisingly watchable and entertaining. Weird to see the guy from Ugly Betty in this play the opposite character in this series.

Just before I go

2/10

Sean William Scott - How far hast thou fallen. I didn't even think it was possible for a b-list celeb to go that low. Gah! You should have tried to continue starring in films with the Rock.

Only reason it gets 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the funny sleep fapping scenes.

The Pacific 8/10: It's obviously very similar to Band of Brothers. There is a bit more religion in this one, it wasn't rammed down your throat like a Catholic priest rams it down a choir boy, but it is more prominent. There is also a lot more back story to the characters in this one. I don't know if it's because it came after band of brothers and you know a little of what to expect that this isn't as good, but the thing that got me is I believed it was the 1940's in Band of brothers and I didn't believe it in the Pacific.

It is still very good and I hope one day they do another mini series.
