I had no idea 2001 was filmed in 70mm. Film stock was generally crappy at the time.

True, though apparently the one I saw was meticulously restored. Anyway, I am probably overthinking it.

Yeah, from what I can see it is very mixed, though most Tarantino lovers still love it and non-fans hate it. I'm trying not to get too worked up either way, though I do typically love his stuff.

KT

I'm a Tarantino fan and actually raised mine one point the other day.

It's new and the 70MM probably looks great though. Didn't see that.

I'd have to say it isn't one of his brightest moments myself.

Sicario - 8.3/10

Well executed thriller. Nothing ground breaking but very watchable. I'm a total sucker for cartel stuff. The cinematography was on a whole other level of awesome.

The only thing I didn't like about the movie was Emily Blunt's character. I didn't think her performance was up to par with the other actor's in the movie and her part wasn't all that well written to begin with.

Ex Machina is very good. 8/10. That's a higher rating than I'd give Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7/10.

Edit:

Interesting. I just checked Metacritic and the critics give both movies ~8/10, but the users give Ex Machina 8/10 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ~7/10. I guess my sentiments are very similar to the average Metacritic user in these cases.

Did anyone see The Hateful Eight in 70mm? Trying to decide if I should use my last day of freedom tomorrow to make the 40 minute trek to a 70mm screening, or just see it within walking distance.

KT

I had tickets to see it in 70mm on Christmas day and ended up having to cancel due to an out-of-town visitor that wasn't planned. Now I'm back to work and next weekend is busy, so I guess I won't be seeing it in 70mm...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- 9/10

I really liked the whole thing, that is, until
the last lightsaber fight. It was pretty lame, honestly.
Wouldn't mind seeing it another time, definitely will be a "buy now!" when it hits bluray.

Ex Machina - I already reviewed this. But I don't understand the love for the movie. It was good. But not great. A solid 6/10 maybe.

It would have been better if the owner of the company was a robot and the actual Turing Test would be to see if the human realized that he was a robot. It would have made for a much better movie.

Creed: 7.5/10

*disclaimer -- I'm a sucker for Rocky

Was really surprised at how well this movie landed. It did a pretty solid job of passing the Rocky torch not only to a new bloodline, but to a new generation of fans too. There were parts I could do without (parts of the training montage was pretty weak, specifically the motorbike "wheelie" thing). I REALLY liked the way the fight scenes were filmed -- especially the first one. it really seemed more "real" and put you in the middle of it. When the Rocky music kicked in towards the end... I admit I got a few goosebumps.

70mm Hateful Eight roadshow 9.5/10 (probably be 8.5/10 if I saw it using a DCP)

The wide ratio Ultra Panavision was flat out amazing. Exterior shots were breathtaking and even it was creatively used on the interiors. Print condition and presentation were excellent (I chose somewhere it would be).

If you're a fan of his work you'll like the movie. The scene leading up to the intermission is some of his best work ever and a knockout Samuel L. Jackson performance on par with his Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. The Morricone score was also totally fabulous.

Theater her was showing it this weekend and I planned on going on Saturday. All times were sold out and Sunday wasn't an option for me

Dune (fanedit) The Alternative Edition, Redux [by Spicediver]

enormous title, and likewise 3 hours running time. this is a fanedit of the david lynch version, adding deleted scenes, extended material, and slightly altering the timing of the story and removing some voice-overs. the editor is Spicediver http://fanedit.org/ifdb/component/jreviews/tag/faneditorname/spicediver/

personally, i thought it was inferior. i did not like the removing of the end (rain on Arrakis) which he claims is inconsistent with F. Herbert's novel (while imho it not only fits, but adds), and i did not like that he omitted some explanatory voiceover; sure, some of it is replaced in the extended material, but most of it was unnecessary as the voiceover more than adequately fills in the missing gaps.

i'm a great fan of Lynch's Dune and i always thought it improves on the source material. Spicedriver's edit adds some important facts about the Bene Gesserit which is omitted in the original (although implied), yet i never missed the implications when i first watched the film, and before reading the book.

still, watching the new scenes was good. i crave Dune and the more the merrier - although you can see why some material was left on the cutting room floor.

hard to grade; would go for 7/10 due to Spicedriver's less than perfect audio work, and the Redux version being in general inferior to the original cut.

Dune - Original Theatrical Release: 8.5/10

ugh, I was turned off by the dismal reviews and 3.5 hour run time but this review intrigues me as I much enjoy QT's camera work (sometimes more than the movie itself). Decisions decisions...

I imagine an unboxing video directed by david fincher and scored by atticus ross/trent reznor would be the greatest 3.5 minute unboxing video ever.

Oh wow, welcome back stranger. Where'd you disappear to for the last few months?

It's been a while since i updated in here, so here's the last five+ weeks.

Zoolander - 4/10
Nope, not for me.

Spotlight - 7/10
This was really quite good, but i was so tired at the time, so probably not the best time to have gone to see it as it's a bit slow. I kept struggling to stay awake. Will need to rewatch as it probably deserves higher.

Ant-Man - 7/10
Hilarious in parts.

Street Fighter 1994 - 3/10
Was playing in "IMAX" as part of a themed night.
So incredibly bad it was great. Me and the gf and most of the rest of the threatre were laughing out loud at so much of the movie.

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi - 7/10
n7 finally sees the final Star Wars, six days prior to seeing the new one.
As he expects, he's not really a fan of the franchise overall and still thinks people primarily love it for nostalgic reasons.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7/10
JJ Abrams with the fan service continuation movie. Entertaining, but i don't see myself caring about any more of the bajillion new ones Disney is going to pump out.

The Assassin - 6/10
I just couldn't get into this. Very beautiful, but i feel like a lot of the cultural significance flew over my head, and i had some trouble following what was going on. Also, REALLY slow.
Would need to rewatch, but honestly not sure i can make it through it again.

Sisters - 6/10
Tina Fey is pretty hawt for a 45 yr. old.
I'd skip this one, though there are some laughs.
#themoviesigoseeforthegf

Brooklyn - 9/10
And here's the gem of the last while, by far.
Saiorse Ronan . She is amazing.
This is a gorgeous poignant story.

Now i just need to find time to see Carol before it disappears from the one theatre playing it here. :/

FWIW: reviews also tend to say this but I found the movie to be hilarious even though pacing was kinda crappy.

Yup, the original 3 films are finally starting to show their age. It's hard to appreciate them anymore. Must have been amazing to be a teen and seeing these from 1977-1983 though.

I'm rewatching the original 3. Episode 4 is tough to watch (4/10). Episode 5 was much more enjoyable (9/10). And episode 6 is probably being viewed tonight. (?/10)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7/10

I think the 7/10 is a fair review. Take away all knowledge of the previous movies and this one was just kind of a meh/10. Having said this, I was going to say that episodes 4,5,6 were better but I'd actually say that this one was better than 4. I think I did previously say this but I am changing my mind. I hope Episode 8 does not suck.

Why am I not allowed to appreciate a film for it's technical, visual, and musical attributes as much (if not moreso in some cases) as the story itself? I suppose you're right though...it's not like they give awards out for those sorts of things.

I read the same reviews and went in with tempered expectations. Any QT fan should be more than satisfied however from the overall package. I personally did not feel it to be slow (as some reviews complain) though the exposition takes bit which isn't exactly unique in his films. Overall I did not feel the film to run long even at the length of the roadshow presentation.
