...and
he is a criminal. He's fencing stolen goods at the start, he assaults the guard, and he knowingly withholds evidence to the police in order to set up a dangerous encounter where people die. He only agreed to the promotion and all those demands because he knew his guy wasn't going to survive.
He hurts plenty of people.

well, it's just wishful thinking, no? the worst thing he actually does is steal the guy's watch. scavenges a bit of copper.
all the rest, he lets someone else do the actual deed - he manipulates people.

sure he breaks the law, the same way you do when you speed or make a u-turn.

also, no idea why the text came out green.

He
assaulted the man to steal the watch and, IIRC, left him unconscious, which means possibly brain-damaged.

Um...the bicycle?

"The worst thing he ever does" is
set up those cops for a dangerous encounter where many people died
.

he would argue that he could not know the man was going to fire.
just like he argues that the paramedics had arrived and there was no reason to stay with his partner.

he's horrible, but he doesn't commit any actual acts himself.

anyway, i thought that was real finesse.

Because he has plausible lies prepared, that means he "didn't really hurt anyone?"

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (staring Tina Fey) 6/10

comedy/drama. had some funny moments but the drama parts didn't click together.

new reporter (Tina Fey) shows up at a party house (Afghanistan), gets accustomed to her new environment & thrives, falls in love, grows up and realizes it's no longer for her.

the part I didn't like the most was when
she black mailed the attorney general.

but he didn't. ok so i already admitted he beat up that guard, sure. Snake Plissken was serving a life sentence when he got sent into the Bronx. There's always heroes who are on the wrong side of the law.

The cops were killed by the home-invasion gang; same for his partner. He witholds evidence which the cops have no way to obtain anyway, and which is not even an uncommon practice.

the guy is no worse than, say, a lawyer.

I agree that he is a sociopath, and i wouldn't want to be friends with him, but he doesn't get his hands dirty. You can blame him on moral grounds, but not legally. He's not a killer - he's just someone who doesn't care if you get killed.
I'm sure we can all relate, deep down inside. ()

Mozart in the Jungle -- 7/10
Amazon Prime. Started out spectacularly, I was hooked by the 2nd episode. However, as the show went on, it deviated from being about the music and this super confident, arrogant, but excellent conductor to being more about that conductor's crazy tendancies and typical relationship stuff. Overall not bad, but I'd have preferred it maintain the tempo and focus of the first few episodes.

I haven't seen Nightcrawler since it was in theaters, but doesn't he also
tamper with the other cameraman's brakes, knowing it would likely lead to a catastrophic and likely fatal accident?

I want to see this really bad despite middling reviews. Tina Fey and Alfred Molina sounds like enough rationale for me to see this.

Anomalisa -- ??/10 -- I honestly don't know how to rate this movie. I am in awe of it's incredible technical feat. I just didn't much enjoy watching it. That's not because it was lightweight or throwaway, just the opposite. It was a seriously deep rumination on human connection, and what it must be like not to be able to.

Here, I'll quote at length from a review in The Atlantic. This guy says it best:
Anomalisa: An Agonizing Love Story, With Puppets

The first act of Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson’s animated film Anomalisa plays out as an unassuming, slice-of-life drama: It follows an Englishman named Michael Stone (David Thewlis) as he flies to Cincinnati, takes a cab to his hotel, and checks into his room, brusquely interacting with chatty strangers the whole time. But the film—made with stop-motion animation and eerily realistic, 3D-printed puppets—is slowly pervaded by a sense of horror. As Michael chats with his cab driver about Cincinnati chili, or a hotel clerk about the kind of room he wants, it becomes clear that every other character, whether male or female, is speaking with the same voice (Tom Noonan’s, to be precise). It’s a remarkably effective depiction of the world’s sameness, seen through the eyes of a character who’s long forgotten how to connect with people.

[...]

Through the theatrical device of having her [Jennifer Jason Leigh's] voice stand out in the crowd, and the pinpoint casting of Leigh (who’s always excelled at playing alluring weirdos), Kaufman and Johnson find a wonderful new angle on depicting what it’s like to fall hard for someone. The hard part is watching it happen to a man as thoroughly awful as Michael.

To be fair, Anomalisa has genuine sympathy for its protagonist and his flaws; its main challenge is getting viewers to feel the same way.

[...]

Despite its focus on romance, on the whole Anomalisa left me cold, perhaps because of its narrow focus and predictable ending. Yes, Michael is a lonely, perhaps clinically depressed soul whose issues with intimacy could fill a psychiatrist’s pad. But he makes for a surprisingly dead-end protagonist after so many Kaufman scripts that explored identity and life on a much grander scale, from Synecdoche, New York to Being John Malkovich. The impact of Anomalisa’s early drudgery lingers, even after the arrival of Leigh’s character. But Kaufman’s writing works best when it’s about people genuinely contending with what it means to be human. If Anomalisa fails, it’s because Michael can’t quite bring himself to relate to anyone else on earth.

Underground on WGN

It seems to be a series about the underground railroad in the antebellum south. I don't know how good the acting is but it looks interesting. Some very offensive language but my guess is that it's probably accurate in terms of how people actually spoke.

The Martian - 9/10 - a hard science movie that's smart, funny, entertaining and a celebration of the good in most people. Except Jeff Daniels, he's evil

The only puzzling thing was the final scene with Sean Bean --
why was he still alive?

House of Cards Season 4 - 9.5/10

The backstabbing political chess is back in full force this season.

If what you say is true, then I can't wait! Hoping to start this on Sunday, but I suppose other obligations will show up between now and then. They usually do.

I must have missed the hard science?
