10 cloverfield lane

No review but this thing is getting glowing reviews. 91% at rotten tomatoes right now.

"This is the type of movie that's going to make you jump in your seat —€” repeatedly — but not from manipulative tactics like jump scares. It's a smart and resourceful take on horror that will appeal to both fans of the genre and those looking for a good modern-day science-fiction story." - polygon.com

Excuse my ignorance, and laziness, but is it related to Cloverfield?

Thought for sure you would love this one.

Ha! So did I [think I'd really like Anomalisa.]

I'd like to add that I didn't dislike it. I just had such conflicting feelings in the wake of seeing it, which I've had trouble explaining, even to myself. As I was struggling to write my review, I came upon the review in The Atlantic which I extensively quoted. It best lays out what I can only call my dis-ease with the film . . . why I personally came away, errrrr, unsatisfied?

I'll try again (and somewhat fail again) by paring down that which I excerpted from that review:

The hard part is watching it happen to a man as thoroughly awful as Michael.

To be fair, Anomalisa has genuine sympathy for its protagonist and his flaws; its main challenge is getting viewers to feel the same way.

[...]

But Kaufman’s writing works best when it’s about people genuinely contending with what it means to be human. If Anomalisa fails, it’s because Michael can’t quite bring himself to relate to anyone else on earth.

I'd like to add that I robustly like films which others may dislike because they're "downers" or "depressing" or "not entertaining." I'm rountinely drawn to such films because I'm drawn to any artistic enterprise which holds up a clear mirror to "the human condition," no matter how bleak the subject. I'll follow "the truth" down any dark alley, you know?

So, I can't really explain, even to myself, why I left Anamolisa with some of the conflicted and negative feelings towards my experience of having watched it that I did.

So, hey, KT! I'd love to hear your reaction to the film, in as much detail as you care to type.

The good reviews of 10 Cloverfield Lane are giving me a semi. WOOT. Doesn't hurt that the lead actress in it is frickin smokin.

I need to see that and Triple 9 (just cause) soon.

I recently watched The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 2 -- 7/10. Nothing spectacular to this final installment of the series. Pecka (Peeta) finally gets his dick wet (apparently? the chemistry between them is horrendous). I was genuinely surprised
when Katniss shot Coin, but it did make sense
. It's a good entertaining popcorn-type movie.

Don't go seeing it expecting the movie to be "sequel". There's rumors that the movies are going to be tied together in the long run of series but this is basically a stand alone movie. More than 80% of the movie takes place in a bunker underground unlike the "first" and they only share very few similarities. This movie focuses more psychological and drama than it does action.

That said, it does everything very well and you'll be throwing surprises with build ups that will make you clench your butt cheeks. This is especially true the closer the movie gets to the end. You'll probably like it regardless of it being substantially different than the "first".

People who like Cloverfield should really watch the first Monsters movie (ie, not the second 'Dark Continent' version). It has a really slow build up but the pay off is well worth it.

edit: Dark Continent isn't bad, just not as good as the first one. On the plus side though, it has a lot more and better special effects.

I liked Monsters quite a bit more than Cloverfield. Been ages since I watched Cloverfield though.

Completely disagree about Monsters. It was a love story and the aliens played a very little back story to it. It was boring and really went nowhere. Cloverfield was basically a Godzilla movie.

You didn't predict the spoiler ^? Seriously? I told my wife watch what she does before it happened. My wife was like, yeah didn't see that coming <sarcasm>. But glad that you were surprised, probably made that POS movie a little better for you.

Anomalisa -- ??/10 -- I honestly don't know how to rate this movie. I am in awe of it's incredible technical feat. I just didn't much enjoy watching it. That's not because it was lightweight or throwaway, just the opposite. It was a seriously deep rumination on human connection, and what it must be like not to be able to.

Here, I'll quote at length from a review in The Atlantic. This guy says it best:
On my list Perk. Will post grade after we make it through House of Cards S4.

It wasn't much of a love story, at least if we're talking traditional romcom. That was an aspect of it and part of what I meant about the slow build up. But at the same time they were telling that story, they we're giving you small tidbits about the invasion. They built the suspense masterfully, at least in my opinion. A lot of movies can do that but they disappoint you with the reveal. Monsters didn't.

It was also pretty original in terms of not having your stereotypical space monster. So it was like Cloverfield in that respect.

Would not go that far, but I did find the characters more interesting and rounded than anyone in Cloverfield. I just remember finding everyone annoying in Cloverfield and not really caring about anything. I've been meaning to re-watch it though since I think I may have been too harsh on it the first time around.

LOL, thanks. I was surprised, yeah, at first. You could tell
Coin was just going to replace Snow as a dictator but I didn't think Katniss would shoot her at that point

Psycho-Pass, the movie (anime) 6.5/10

future dystopian society.
Psycho-pass is a criminal measure of a person's 'soul':
mental states, personalities, and the probability that individuals will commit crimes

kinda of like Minority Report except instead of seeing into the future, people's brains are constantly scanned
to identify latent criminals.

When the probability of a person engaging in crimes measured by the Crime Coefficient index algorithm exceeds a certain level in an individual, he or she is pursued, apprehended, and Rehabilitated or killed if necessary.

The plot focuses on Akane Tsunemori, an Inspector of Unit One—a police unit from the Public Safety Bureau.
(wished it included more of her team of Enforcers.)

premise wasn't bad.
a person is deemed to having potential criminal tendencies by how they think, behave and believe.

the problem I had was that some characters spoke English because they were foreigners (ie: non-Japanese).
uggg... horrible accents and I could barely understand what they said.
thank god for subtitles.

if it weren't for the butchered English, I would give it a 7.5/10.

The series is so good compared to the film. Season 1 anyway.

Juno - 6/10 - It was okay. I mainly watched it for Ellen Page and had never seen it before. I found the dialogue irritating and unnatural... She's supposed to be precocious, witty, and sarcastic, but I didn't see any of that. I just saw someone with a stick up her ass and very artificial. Looked like her "wit" was on 24/7 even in crisis situations and breakdowns. Sarcastic people, in real-life, are generally in character and break character often, especially when emotional. See Emma Stone in Easy A and Ellen Muth in Dead Like Me for well done witty/sarcastic types.

How the hell did this get an Oscar...
