bcooper was a good cast, deniro's role was very limited, didn't really get a chance to shine.
but the movie had a good pace to it, and was entertaining throughout.

Fuck.. got mixed up again. Just watched The hangover before writing the review.

No worries, I was just reading your review and thought "oh crap, I missed Ed Helms in a cameo"!

Barking Dogs Never Bite (Flandersui gae) - 9/10: This is Bong Joon-Ho's first feature and since I've now seen all of his films, it is probably one of my favourites, maybe right behind Mother. It's about a graduate student with a pregnant wife trying to become a professor; he ends up, um, eliminating a yappy dog in his apartment complex and various shenanigans ensue. Full of ridiculous characters and hilarious scenes, but with the underlying heart and darkness of all his films. Definitely one of my favourite directors currently working. Funnily enough The Host is probably his most well-known film, but I actually think it's my least favourite of his (which is not a huge slight since everything he does is very good). Anyway, great movie and great director!

Yeah I liked it, I thought this and The Nines were underrated, Ryan Reynolds was much better here than in the Green Lantern and the usual hollywood drivel.

I wish we had that up here. I hear it mentioned all the time on podcasts and they seem to have some great stuff.

It's like you're living in a third world country up there . I'd like to move to europe some day but if canada doesn't even have a lot of the same services we have here in the US, I can't imagine what it's like further away, or even worse, far away and rural. I guess the US is fading in everything except entertainment.

Though when I get ifc, and if there's anything exceptional, maybe I can let you use my slingbox if you can mind the quality

We get IFC, but not in HD and not on demand as far as I can tell, but it could just be my cable provider. :hmm: I'll have to give them a call.

The Rules of Attraction - 6/10: An interesting, sometimes fun, but overall pretty sloppy film. Apparently this is based on a book, but the style of the film was sort of based on Tarantino's style and as such tries several style tricks; some work and some are just annoying. There are several good parts, mainly revolving around Van Der Beek and his various exploits, plus one side story involving some random guy that really does not play into anything and is just a bit of comedic relief or something. Unfortunately there are also several nonsensical bits that annoyed me or were just plain stupid (the gay guy's storyline was actually pretty silly and the choices he made were ludicrous). So yeah, not awful as I expected and it had some generally good, fun moments.

Pan's Labyrinth - 7.5/10: Been wanting to see this forever, but just never got around to it. Everyone here probably saw this ages ago, so I won't go into details, but suffice to say I liked this quite a bit. My biggest complaint is there was not enough of the fantasy element; I found those parts so cool and exciting that I wanted more of it and was disappointed every time it reverted back to the real world. It's not as if the real world was a poor story or did not have compelling characters, it was just such a shift in tone, it was kind of jarring and left me wanting for the fantasy story. Anyway, cool movie, I just needed more of that cool fantasy world.

Why is Toy Story 3 on streaming but Wall-E and Up are not?
:hmm:
Because Toy Story 3 is on Starz Play.

Noises Off - 9/10

This was a great madcap comedy about the behind the scenes goings on of a made-it-to-Broadway play. Everybody is in this film: Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, Denholm Elliot (RIP), Julie Hagerty, Christopher Reeve (RIP), Marilu Henner, John Ritter (RIP),Mark Linn-Baker, Nicollette Sheridan, etc. There are so many moments where I laughed that I needed to watch this a couple times to pick up what I missed. basically, Caine is the director of a play, and the other characters are getting more and more at each others throats. The crazy pranks they pull on each other escalate more and more each showing. If nothing else, it's a great reminder of some of the fantastic talent we have lost over the last decade or so.

Cars 2 - 7/10. Still visual stunning but the story is not as charming and moving as the first one. Feel like Jame Bond "light".

Bad Teacher - 7/10. Not bad but not that great either. There was a nice pair of naked boobies in the movie - no, not from the main female character (Diaz), LOL.

Friends With Benefits - 8/10. Funny and charming, good chemistry between Kunis and Timberlake. There were several scences/locations in the movie that I recognize while visit NYC a few months ago. I did not realize how pretty Kunis' eyes are with close up and zoom in shots in this movie. Other movies such as Book Of Eli, Date Night did not have close up shots of her face. There were some nude (from the back) scences in the movie, not sure if they were Timberlake and Kunis bodies or body doubles.

^^ I'll be interested to hear your thoughts. I've heard many people say you should try to watch his filmography in order, since his films seem to get a bit more obtuse with every release, but I'm sure it does not really matter.

Inferno - 6.5/10: Dario Argento's 1980 thriller/horror film about a brother and sister getting wrapped up in some weird murders/disappearances, surrounding some books about witches (I'm a little foggy on the whole thing to be honest). Things are pretty incoherent in parts and I honestly had no idea why certain things were happening, but a lot of the sequences were pretty awesome anyway, with some very cool death scenes; there's a scene involving cats and another involving rats and both were fantastic. So yeah, I enjoyed this, but I can't rate it higher because I can't really explain how or why many things happened. The disconnect there hurt the film, but there was enough fun stuff to keep me happy.

True Grit (2010) - 7/10 - I liked it. I never saw the original though so I can't compare.
Wild Target - 6/10 - not bad, some funny scenes but not as funny as the commercials made it out to be.

Think I may have mentioned it in the old thread but I just watched The Jack Bull again tonight and I have to encourage everyone to see it at least once.

Well, that was quite an experience. I definitely need to sleep on it before I post my thoughts though. :hmm:

Alright, here we go

The Tree of Life - 8.5/10:
This was definitely nothing like anything I've seen before, it's truly a work of art. I was very cautious going in, and after pondering it for a while, I think I liked it.

I'm not very adept at seeing the meaning or message of films at first glance, so I'm sure I missed a lot, but here is how I would describe this particular movie if you don't have any experience with malick. I will talk about the flow of the movie and general plot points, so proceed with caution, even though there isn't much to spoil.

I loved the beginning of the movie. From the opening, to seeing mr. and mrs. o'brien mourn, and then the amazingly beautiful shots that soon follow(there's about 10 or 15 minutes of nature/space shots with just about no talking, which I think was showing the creation of the universe and life). KT, I know you said you were unsure about the beginning, but it was by far what I liked most about the film, and what I found most thought provoking. And the emotion of the scenes in the beginning were far more dramatic.

The rest of the film settles down, though too late for some people, who walked out during the "creation" stuff. A good amount of the people who stayed were much worse though, by talking through a lot of it, very annoying. It seemed like the younger audience had a much easier time watching it. And I'm talking high school young, and I was surprised and impressed they seemed to enjoy it. Maybe it was act lol, idk, but the older people were douchetastic.

Anyway, the rest of the film seemed to be meant as memories of a now older sean penn, looking back on his rough childhood, trying to figure out if his father's difficult ways paid off in the end(perhaps near his death?). I didn't seem to think malick tries to push the viewer in either direction, but maybe I'm wrong. These scenes are hard for me to express. The entire movie is amazingly directed, malick and his dp have just shown me the must beautiful movie I've ever seen. I think the beginning scenes were better than the rest of the movie, but maybe I was just getting pulled into the story.

Either way, it's very beautiful, but I'm not sure I loved the stories and dialogue that malick decided to show us. I think he could have given us more, more emotion, more than just the kid's sad looking face. More than just pitt's character is tough. I thought this part of the movie, which was the majority of the film, dragged a little.

That stopped me from loving the movie as much as some. I can appreciate the film as a piece of art but I'm wary of giving it too much credit just for being unique. Again, it's an amazing piece of art, but I think it slightly misses the mark from really being a masterpiece. I will say that I am really looking forward to seeing more malick films now.

Alright, here we go

The Tree of Life - 8.5/10: **SNIP**

Glad to hear you liked it overall. I can see how you would like it a bit less if you were not swept up into the family dynamic which comprises pretty much the entire middle of the film. For me, however, that part worked very well; I thought the kids were amazing, plus the dichotomy of Pitt and Chastain added to the overall impact of the story. The ending was a bigger problem than the beginning and I'm still a little unsure if Sean Penn's part was even necessary in the film.

I'm actually going to try and go see it again this long weekend; it's amazingly in its 7th week at the theatre here. I was listening to Filmspotting's review yesterday and and it really made me want to see this again; we'll see if my opinion changes on the second viewing.

I definitely think it's a movie to see in a theater. I'm not sure it's something you want to watch at home unless you have a very nice setup.

I think the more I read and learn about the movie the more I may appreciate the story. I didn't have any issue with penn, it was barely any screen time and I think it added some value, mainly to the mystical and abstract aspect of the movie. Though i'm not sure if I understood or enjoyed those end scenes either
