and then, to pick myself up, i watched a couple classics.
The Abyss -
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096754/reference
James Cameron's epic .. no. not titanic. NO, NOT AVATAR.
NO, NOT TERMINATOR EITHER !!
James Cameron's epic The Abyss is so grossly underestimated .. the main issue is that it's two films squashed together, the Alien-thingie with the water creatures, SciFi, and the Adventure bit, with the sub and the station flooding, both of which could make a whole film on their own .. and i'm not kidding, as i've watched the Uncut Version, at 2h45m w/o credits.
People are gonna be put off by the running time, and by how different the two themes are; the SciFi part is all feelgood, a la Cocoon, and the Adventure bit is quite grim, with Michael Bihen playing the Evil Army Dude(tm) like a proper psycho.
But, the film is so marvellously complex, so well crafted, so well put together, that you'll forget it's 3 hours long - just keep stocked with popcorn.
The alien city at the end is so laughably cartoonish, you'll spend the rest of your life thinking "why use CGI everywhere, but not when you need it?", but the script more than makes up for it. The characters are believable, the acting is pretty good, the only real problem is that, like many epics, you really need to be in a movie theater to enjoy it, as it's been designed for the big screen - it loses so much impact on a pc monitor.
8.5/10
and,
Hot Shots ! -

plus
Hot Shots, Part Deux !! -

marathon.
I remembered Ep 1 as funnier, and Ep 2 as less funny, i guess i must have them switched around - Ep 1 is the pisstake on Top Gun, while Ep 2 is the pisstake on Rambo, but like the Austin Powers series, they got better as they went along - more money, a clearer vision of what they wanted to achieve, and more charlie sheen... you can never have enough charlie sheen.
Ep 1 :
6.5/10 - meh, it's kinda like Airplane, but not as good.
Ep 2 :
7/10 - solid spoof comedy film.
