The Big Short -- 9/10

Been waiting to see this and it came yesterday as my Netflix movie so I watched it right away. I really enjoyed it and I liked how they explained things so you can understand what the f was going on. Good acting and lots of humor; kinda reminded me of "Wolf of Wall Street" in that way, though not as vulgar, lol.

I didn't get a blatent "fuck capitalism" message from it that I kinda thought I would which I appreciated. It really is sad though how fucking scummy and stupid (more of the former, I think) so many people were to make this happen. I just don't get the whole "fuck over other people any time you can" mentality; guess it was the way I was raised.

Anyway, very good movie; see it if you haven't!

Star Wars Episode 7 - 7/10

It was certainly better than the prequels but the major issue I have with it is that the movie was soooo similar to the original movies. The only original idea I gathered from the movie was the addition of Fin but even his story line was paper thin. The rest... well take Episode 4 & 5, shake up the plot a tad bit a voila you have Episode 7. It's like they were so scared of becoming another "prequel" that they just went into copy/paste mode and played it safe.

Major issue aside it was an entertaining movie with fantastic special effects & CGI. The "throwbacks", while much too numerous, were integrated into the movie fairly well. I did like the addition of Solo and Chewbacca into the plot, I was worried that they were just going to be a cameo though you could see Solo's fate coming from a mile away.

I'm looking forward to Episode 8, hopefully Episode 7 is just a step in the right direction.

See, I don't think they explained things enough. I understand the concept of what went on, but I don't think they conveyed it very well. Also, for a guy that is willing to starve himself for a character, Bale could have spent a few hours learning to pretend to drum better.

I thought his drumming was ok. Then again, I'm not a drummer and don't know hardly anything about it, so I didn't notice anything was off about it.

Pixar story 10/10

Informative documentary to see.
I'll watch it for sure when I get the chance. I've always been a huge fan and I live around 3 miles from their Emeryville compound. I have never worked up the courage to walk up to their receptionist and ask about employment opportunities, though.

The movie was released 1981 in Australia and 1982 in the US, which might be why you are seeing both dates. As for 1997, that just looks to be when the DVD was released. The multiple titles are because the studio dropped the Mad Max 2 moniker in some regions because the original wasn't well known outside of Australia, but it's the same movie.

It's my personal favorite of the series by a long shot.
Watched last night:

The Road Warrior (George Miller, 1982) 6/10

Mel Gibson, he had such a soft aspect about him compared to the later Lethal Weapon movies (I loved at least the first two, can't remember how I felt about the 3rd).

This movie is watchable, but for me not so much. At 95 minutes it still seemed too long, damned too long. I don't know that I'll ever watch another road warrior movie. Pretty far out there on the mad fantasy tip. I agree that this was the best of them, but still really a mediocre movie.

Love this movie. Rented then bought it on sale from iTunes recently. Surprised it got on NetFlix so soon. The "aside" explanations were okay but I found that they took away from the movie a bit. For me, the in-conversation explanations were adequate. But I know more about this crap than average people -- which is sad because I don't know much.

I didn't see an anti-capitalism message other people have mentioned. More like anti-greedy, incompetent assholes who thought bubbles/speculation and "free" money would go on forever like what's going on right now in the real world.

No, no, no... There's a full PG-13 sex scene out there. Is it a spoiler if I saw which episode it's from?

The one that aired this past Monday, May 16.

I understood what happened prior to seeing the movie, but I still enjoyed the weird explanations. I thought it was kinda funny how whoever was giving the explanations had NOTHING to do with the actual movie. They were each there for their one short monologue and that was it. It was a way to quickly explain relevant terminology or events to people with no clue and keep it somewhat entertaining for the people that haven't been living under a rock for the past 6-8 years. Brilliant decision imo.

they did a similar film a couple years back, where they tried to stick to professional terminology throughout - although there is *one* scene which was put in for the sole purpose of explaining what was going on.

the film is called Margin Call. it's absolutely horrid. i say, try to watch it, and you will appreciate The Big Short much more.

I thought Margin Call was decent. I don't think it's nearly as good as The Big Short, but I'd maybe give it 7/10 or so.

Frasier [8/10]: IIRC, this sitcom started when cartoons were over. In my teens, this seemed boring as hell and I always changed the channel or turned off the TV. I decided to give it a go as an adult, thanks to Netflix. I enjoy it a lot. All the humor holds up. This started filming 1994. That's why my family immigrated to US.

Man what a time I live in. My family was so poor back then. It's surreal to watch this show back in time and actually relate to the humor as a upper/middle class today.

Saw the latest crop of movies

Zootopia [7/10]: Good, but nothing special. The sloth scene absolutely destroyed me. Now THAT'S humor, not this stupid tryhard pop-referencing brand found in Deadpool. Some people here in ATOT spoke very highly of this flim. It is just okay. It did not tug my heart or got me sucked right in like Ratatouille or Up.

The Big Short [8/10]: The movie concisely explained to me very well what was happening. What an absolute joke this entire Wall St. is. This entire movie proved none of the folks in it provided ANY value to society or any tangible work. Yet they walked away with hundreds of millions of dollars. Kudos to them for sticking it to the banks though. I also liked seeing how people in this industry do their job. It was cool to see how they did real market research by walking around to realize that there was a real-estate bubble brewing.

Spotlight [8/10]: Yet another solid, enjoyable movie that I'll probably forget about years down the road. It was well grounded & well presented. Worth every minute of it I saw.

Your family immigrated to the US because of Frasier? :hmm:

Kelsey Grammer must be proud! (And I am sure that Ted Danson is somehow demanding royalties after that knowledge)

Yeah the in-field visit to check if there was a housing bubble was very smart. I don't have anything against the guys that shorted the banks; kudos to them for figuring out what was going on and making some money in the process. The litany of pure scum that caused the whole thing, on the other hand...

Wolf Worrior 3/10 Bad movie about Chinese Special Forces. Horrible script.

You should have watched Wolfcop instead -- it's terrible-riffic! His wolfy powers are made stronger by
drinking booze and eating doughnuts!
Awooooooooo!!
