The Signal - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2910814/reference

It's a "medium-budget" film, it has some of the aspects of a low budget film and a few of the regular films .. this should not scare you, it's a nice film; spoiler, if you liked Moon, this film is for you.

I'm convinced it's too easy to spoil, so i will not give you anything of the plot. The start of the film looks not very promising but the pace really picks up later on; there's a few repetitive bits but the film is really well done, with a strong sci-fi element.

recommended for, as i've said, Moon fans. 7/10

i wouldn't even watch the trailer; leave all the spoilers out before you watch, and enjoy the mystery and suspension buildup.

zoolander 2 - 0/10: I think we made it 20-30 minutes in before we turned it off. We decided it must have been an inside joke to see if they could make money with such an obviously terrible movie. My god, it was so awkward and badly delivered it was painful.

Sisters - 6/10: I like both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and it was about what I expected from a movie featuring both of them. One sister is a straight laced boring lass that realizes she hasn't lived, and the other is a partier who realizes she's been a terrible role model for her daughter. They decide to have one last big party in their parents house before they sell it, and everything you expect to happen happens. Good light hearted comedy, but nothing special.

The Revenant - 8/10: Finally saw it. It was well paced, and kept my attention the whole time without seeming too long. No idea why Leo won anything for this, Tom Hardy was the only one that impressed me here. I had pretty low expectations as all the trailers bored me, and weren't very up front about what it was about. Turned out well though, will probably have to watch it again.

zoolander's only making money because people think it will be funny as the first one was.

i watched Mr Right - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2091935/reference

it's a mix of two things that should never, ever mix: action and romcom. i gotta say, i both enjoyed, and was horrified by, this film. It only really comes together at the end, and most of the time you'll be seriously pissed off at how the tone of the film changes in drastic and incompatible ways; but, it's weird in a way as both halves are actually pretty good. I thought it was funny, the various action scenes are some of the best i have ever seen, and Anna Kendrick is just adorable.

i would recommend it, although i'm not sure *who* i would recommend it to.

7/10, because 8 (great film) -1(WHY mix these two things together)

also, because i couldn't get to sleep, i watched again

Tampopo - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092048/reference

In case you have never watched this gem, it's a Japanese (subs only) film from the 80s, about a woman who owns a run down noodle shack, and of the people who help her turn it around into a successful restaurant.
Rather surreal film, you can't call your collection complete until you've seen this.

I despair of ever understanding the attraction of movies like Zoolander, where it appears that the horrendousness is supposedly what makes it so good.

OK... So... Hrm. I mean it kept me coming back to watch, it wasn't bad but there were just so many plot holes that made no sense and at least 1 maybe 2 episodes that I think were just thrown in because they had an 8 episode deal. Give it a shot I guess.

Spoiler plot holes:
So, "the past pushes back" except only when it wants to and is convenient? I think EP1 he tries to call his dad and the past pushes back by first trying to run him over and then by burning down his hotel and killing a kid. OK, the past can be a real dick if you want to make a phone call. But then Jake goes on to kill Harry's dad and save Harry's family and the past is all "yeah, that's ok I guess". Huh? Further along the story the past tries to kill Jake when he tries to eavesdrop on the CIA guy at the dinner place. And yet the past is OK with Jake living next to and eventually under Oswald, hey everyone has to have a roof over their head right?

Seriously, getting his ass kicked and amnesia just felt like a complete waste of time and was just fluff to add quantity to the episode count. At least a whole episode of that BS could have been tossed.

If you didn't see his return to present day going the way that it did, you're a box of rocks. It was so expected that even Kennedy saw it coming.

Maybe I'm just looking for that surprise ending to things now, but the end was filled with weaksauce. So after 8ish hours, it was actually a love story. I see.

The first Zoolander was fun, funny, sweet and clever. To enjoy a movie like this you have to accept the premise. Like Buckaroo Banzai, it creates an alternate reality but here with models instead of a brain surgeon scientist musician with his own crime-fighting organization. It then lives in that reality, and like BB plays it mostly straight-faced even while wacky stuff happens all around.

Edit: or like the first Austin Powers, which mocked British spy movies but still built a world in which their illogical rules all worked. The later movies stepped away from that a bit in having you laugh at Austin as being a joke instead of the world's greatest spy.

That's a good one, I should watch it again.

You might like The Twilight Samurai which is not an action movie, it's a period drama with a samurai main character. No rating since it's been a decade or more since I watched it.

I think I'd give season 1 of "True Detective" 9 or 9.5 out of 10. Man, just fantastic. But yeah, I hit season 2 and kinda went "uhhhh..." I ended up finishing it, and it was ok, but I didn't find it nearly as good as season 1. I'd maybe give season 2 a 7.5/10.
I've started rewatching it (True Detective, Season One... finished episode 3 last night of the 8 episode season 1), and am now inclined to agree. My initial 8.5 was me, I had my own problems with it and having seen the whole thing, and now some of the insider stuff (not the director's commentary yet, but some of the "inside episode" brief extras) I am liking it a lot more. Plus, some of the things that puzzled me on first view are just way more clear now. So many flashbacks because of the way it's all constructed. So yeah, I can see a 9 or 9.5 rating out of 10!

and more buttsecs.

and the Princess's key code for her prison door was 2625 (look at your cell keypad)

The Nice Guys

7.5 out 10 the plot is just there as a way to get Ryan Gosling's and Russel Crowe's characters to interact. But they have pretty good chemistry and their interactions are entertaining.
It being set in the 70's might be an odd choice but it mostly works as the plot kind of hinges on it.

I would watch a sequel if it was ever made.

I don't think I will try Season 2 of True Detective. I heard it's OK, but not as good as Season 1. It's in CA, not LA, has different actors, it's really a different thing, a different series, basically.

Watched Black Mass on dvd. I was underwhelmed, because my expectations were much higher. Give it 7/10, which is my minimum for giving a thumbs up.

I thought that the story line, while keeping to some level of historical accuracy, was a bit boring. I've read a few books on Bulger and his associates. The true story makes Depp's character seem two dimensional. Depp did perform a credible job, but I thought it was the story telling that was weak. Depp did very much look the part of James Whitey Bulger. The secondary characters in my opinion were not cast or portrayed very well. They came across as older men with low energy.

Les Misérables - 7/10 - Watchable, very good cast, but not mind blowing and didn't have my full attention the entire time. Didn't really find any of the songs that memorable.

And holy shit, Anne Hathaway dies like 15 minutes after she first appears on screen. I heard talk about it before but thought they were exaggerating. Other supporting roles can be as short, but 15 minutes out of a ~3 hour movie is very short.

Russell Crowe singing, also heard about this before. His first song or two are like yelling, gets better later in the movie.

Love and Friendship - 8/10

Let me start by saying I do not particularly enjoy Austen's writing - the period, the society, all that fluff. That said, the humor (both dry and damn-near slapstick at time) and dialogue are both spot on. The first 15 minutes had me both worried and cautiously curious. After that, it was an enjoyably romp through London and the English countryside. The characters are detestable, noble, humorous, pompous, egomaniacal and genuine - often simultaneously.

If you happen to be one of those guys who has to take your wife/gf to a "chick flick" once in a while, jump on this one. If you're not one of them, consider watching it anyway. It's was quite entertaining, and a nice break from the comic book genre.

Ugh this was terrible. I saw the trailer and thought it would be okay... Woody Harrelson playing a corrupt LA cop. But it was bad. Annoying camerawork at times, bunch of useless scenes, lots of scenes with dialogue over loud background noise, and a dumb ending. Worse movie I've seen in a while.. easily.

Safe House - 7/10
I watched this a couple years ago and had to watch it again. It was better than I remember. Denzel was good as usual.

Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It - 7/10
I've been a big TPB fan for a long time and missed that this movie was out. I guess I would rate it like the other TPB movies... good, but I liked the TV episodes a bit more.

Hardcore Henry - 3/10 or 7/10

it's shot 1st person and almost entirely with a GoPro camera on his head.

if you're a fan of Max Payne video game, you'll like this.
1st person view and high body count just like the video game.

if not, then you'll get sick of the 1st person gimmick after 15min.

either way, the stunts are impressive.

and cute female lead:
