Risen. 8.5/10. Reminds me a lot of American troops stuck in Iraq and not giving a fig about the tribal rivalries.

East Side Sushi - 8/10

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2340650/

Many people compare it to "Ramen Girl" but I like "East Side Sushi" better as I the two leads felt very alive, and the whole film just run very smooth and more down to earth, and very believable.

I started working in a Japanese restaurant back in junior year of high school, and worked my way to be a sous chef on both hot and cold food (sushi as well but not a lead sushi chef), so I could related very well to the characters in the film, especially when my ex was a latina as well... ahhh...

decent story, good acting, but bad direction and bad photography. i also wouldn't recommend this film as a way to look at japanese culture; it's true, the japanese don't take easily to change, they are very much attached to tradition, but this film doesn't really explain that well, so you either already know, or you think everyone's being a dick to the mexican girl.

i'll take Ramen Girl instead. 6/10

Great pilot can't wait to watch more.

They've aired 2 episodes.

I'm not 100% sold on it yet, but liked what I've seen thus far. I think they need to speed things up with they want to get a wider audience.

like i said, Preacher is some intense stuff. It's complicated and it gets to be really weird later in the story.
I too thought the second episode was slow, but i'm confident the show is only building up to the tension. Mad shit is gonna go down!!
Or rather, Mad Shit better be going down, Or I'll Stop Watching!!

I don't have time for another Constantine.

Speaking of TV Shows, anyone care to explain what is happening in person of interest?

i found it really irritating that they brought back to life Shaw; and on top of that, now we have a second premise - mind control is a real thing! Already the thing where the machine can talk to /Root (who i thought was called Ruth, btw) was hard to swallow.
I suspect this show will never have a conclusion.

Also,

10 Cloverfield Lane - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1179933/reference

Excellent film, much better than i expected. But .. somewhat limited. I knew they would use John Goodman in that specific way - which is actually what put me off watching it - and while the premise (which has strong theater roots) is solid enough, it's not something i wanted to watch;
no spoilers because, well, it's in the trailer.

scene 1: Woman drives car, crashes, wakes up in basement chained; John Goodman is the weirdo who has abducted her.
scene 2: (no set change) Weirdo says he's a good guy, tries to prove it but something feels weird: suspence.
scene 3: (partial set change) zOMG! Shock!

Pretty solid script, sure, but i've seen it before. Like Moon, i feel they should have added "something more".

thus my vote 7/10

Self/less 6/10 might have been better with Jake Gyllenhaal instead of Ryan Raynolds. Raynolds can't quite do tragic hero.

Daredevil season 1 - 10/10

Daredevil season 2 (only 3 episodes in so far) - 10/10

i can't believe how good this show is. my coworker has been telling me to watch it since he convinced me to get netflix and watch narcos like 5 months ago, and i kept putting it off because the movie sucked so bad. it is NOTHING like the movie. it's probably the best marvel thing since iron man 1. it is so good with such great character development. definitely recommend.

Wait for it...

after watching 4 more episodes of season 2, my rating has dropped dramatically. season 2 is pretty lame overall now. still have like 6 episodes left so hopefully it gets better.

There is is. Yeah, every now and again me and the wife will trudge through another episode hoping that this one will be the last, and it never seems to be. They did the standard Marvel "We don't know what to do now, THROW MORE CHARACTERS AT IT!!!" thing.

I'm about the same place you are in the show and completely agree with your assessment. But you should check out Jessica Jones it is just as good, if not a little better, than Dare Devil season 1.

We just can't get into JJ. I keep trying, but I don't know what it is about it. I personally wouldn't say it is better than DD1, not even close.

i finished episode 9 the other night and daredevil season 2 has gotten better than the episodes 4-6 crap. it's still not up to par with season 1 but it's on the up and up so far. my wife still likes it a lot but we both agree that the non-daredevil stuff going on is a lot more interesting than his stuff at this point.

Paradox (2016) on Netflix. 6/10. Time travel movie where people who build the time machine get killed. I figured out the killer really early on in the movie and the twist at the end just fell flat.

The dialog/acting in this is so laughably terrible.

The thing about JJ is that David Tennant completely steals the show. Once the show starts to spend considerable time with his character the show becomes excellent.

oh yeah?

well, i only watched the first episode; i don't like the lead actress (i mean .. i would totally bone her, she's hot. i just don't like her as an actress), but im totally gay for Tennat. I love him even though he likes Coldplay, that's how much i love him.

I did like Apartment 23; but Ritter doesn't work for me in a serious role.

Trailer Park Boys Season 8 & 9 - 8/10
I was a big fan of this since mid 2000s and finally started to catch up on the new Netflix seasons. It's much like the previous seasons, but still hilarious. I like when Lahey gets absolutely shitfaced, which is pretty much all the time.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - 9.5/10
One of the best movies I've seen in a while. Too bad that it didn't do better... it got good reviews but probably barely broke even.

I love the part when the CIA chief (who had shown a dislike of the operators) is talking to Silva. You can hear the big bearded operator lifting really loudly outside, then the chief is like "Quiet! You act like animals!".

The Double [2011] - 6.5/10
Not bad. Has a nice twist or two.

In the Heart of the Sea - 7/10
Another solid Ron Howard movie.

Rewatched that today, I'd still say about a 7.8/10 myself.

Not for a lot of people, but I liked it.

Still haven't checked that one out yet, I think HBO has it running.

10 Cloverfield Lane I liked probably enough to say a 7.5/10 personally.

Jessica Jones I had a problem really getting into myself, I watched the first season just because it was there I think.

Silver Dream Racer

1980, motorcycle road racing. a prototype bike. David (Essex) vs Goliath. A girl.

5/10. Cool seeing 500gp bikes at Silverstone. Overall the motorcycle footage isn't bad, even if the sound isn't Ronin-level. But the story is pretty cheesy. If they ever remake it, Olivia Munn should play the love interest.

The Aliens - 6 episode TV series for season 1.

Nearly 40 years ago aliens crash-landed in the UK. They look like us, but are forced to live in a ghetto. Border control officer Lewis falls in love with one.

Despite the name and the backstory, there is very, very, very little in the show that would qualify it as sci-fi. Think of it as a gritty drama with a lot of comedic elements in it. It's almost as if they used the sci-fi backstory just to win over some of the nerd crowd who wouldn't watch it otherwise. The show is more a show about life in the ghetto and racism and stuff like that than aliens.

Nonetheless, I give it a 7/10.

EDIT:

Frack. No season 2.

Get A Job - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1468846/reference

good luck finding it. limited release, US only, and basically only available on screeners. so call that friend who works at the distribution company because he might have it.

The Whiplash kid and the Mr Right girl are a young couple who have just graduated and are looking to Get A Job; coming out of college you're always the smartest guy on the planet, then you meet the workforce and you are useless.

Miles Teller is pretty decent in this (comedy suits him) and Anna Kendrick is as adorable as always, the script is the same you've seen a dozen times before (group of friends turn mischief into genius as they hatch a plot to be happy without harming anyone), including the obvious happy ending for everyone. Well directed, funny, a nice feelgood film that should mildly entertain everyone.

Would recommend to anyone 7/10

The Hateful Eight (Tarantino, 2015) ?/10

Saw info in a few places that made me think this was a movie I should see, that might be great. I watched about the first hour of this 168 minute 8th film by Tarantino just now and just had to hit the player's power button. I felt like I wanted to go to sleep. Nothing that happened entertained me, or interested me. It's sort of character driven but the characters are if anything merely caricatures. There's no plot development so far of any interest whatsoever. The only thing happening of any real interest potentially is the visuals, the gestalt of them being in cold blizzard conditions. However, a man presumably threatened with freezing to death, and bantering doesn't even shiver.

TBH, so far at least, I would call it LOUSY. It is dealing in the currency of Americans' fascination with the Old West, or rather a willingness to accept fantasizing about crude and cruel conditions from the comfort of an armchair. Bleh! Does it get better? One would think that an exceptionally long movie must have more going for it than the "average" movie or it's trying the movie watching public. To me, so far it doesn't. No blood and guts so far (except for a couple of men punching a woman in the mouth a couple of times. I just scanned some pithy one or two sentence professional reviews at rottentomatoes.com, so I know that B&G is coming in spades), but I'm not enticed to watch the rest by virtue of a promise of B&G... sex, maybe, B&G, nah.

The appeal so far, it seems, is the script and the visuals. Neither of them are doing much for me.

I've liked some Tarantino movies a lot... Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown. I watched the Kill Bill movies once, I have them on the shelf, have never revisited them. They didn't work for me the first time, intended to revisit them, but haven't.

Should I watch the rest of T.H.E.?
The Hateful Eight - 5/10: At this point, I'm fairly convinced Tarantino has a fetish for saying the N word. It was cute and funny in Pulp Fiction, but it got old quickly. I also am of the opinion Westerns don't lend themselves well to Tarantino's style of dialog writing (which was superb in modern day movies of his early years). All in all, same cast of characters for 3 hours and not much substance or clever dialog and story to be great. It's like Reservoir Dogs 150 years before it happened, but not as good.

Can't argue with this ... at all. I think I'll save myself a couple of hours and any more disappointment.

Do you like Tarantino movies? He has a certain style and I love his movies...........BUT........I did not think this movie was great either. Tarantino is a master of dialogue, this movie's dialogue didn't grab me like his other movies.
