Didn't care about the girl, but glad the seagull survived.

The Host - Fuq I am old/10 - Missed the first half hour, watched it because Saoirse Ronan was in it. She was pretty good. Didn't know Stephanie Meyer wrote the book -- Twilight writer -- but everything came together when her name popped up in the credits. It also became pretty obvious why it was on the Family channel -- most impressive was how there were no advertisements, how do they make money? No, I didn't love it. It was a teeny movie. Divergent was on TV tonight and I considered watching it, but after The Host... no, thank you.

Not quite what I was expecting but still a good movie.

The Man In The High Castle (8/10)
Season 1
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740299/

Available on Amazon Video. Really loved the show. The last few episodes were not as good as the rest of the season and it seemed to kind of abruptly end with a WTF last episode. Looking forward to see season 2 but really curious how it's going to pick up for season 1.

i watched

Calvary (2014) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2234003/reference

Great big powerful performance by Brendan Gleeson, i was honestly thinking "how can he be so good" most of the time.

The story of a Irish priest in a small town, seen through an unusual frame - in one week, he will be killed.
In the confessional, an unknown man tells him how a priest used to rape him, and therefore he will kill him, because the killing of a good priest will bring more shame to the catholic church.

It's truly not about the story, but about the performances. Brenda Gleeson delivers with confidence and superb skill. One of the finest film actors we have, after the passing of PSH.

Great film, i had not yet seen The Guard (2011) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1540133/reference
when this came out, and i had mistaken it for a story about the church and about a priest, when it's neither - it's the story of a man.

..and had therefore not seen it.

While i would rather recommend The Guard, as it's funny black comedy rather than an introspective (can i haz adjective?), they are both great films, with Calvary being the superior one, if not the more accessible of the two.

My vote for both:

BrendanGleeson/10 you could watch him act out taking a dump and you would like it
or 8/10

and since i woke up really early i also re-watched

The Commitments (1991) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101605/reference

better than i had remembered it; i recall feeling very sad at the dark ending, and not enjoying much the performances of the non-professional actors.
Now, several years later (and watching it not dubbed, which turns out is quite important in these kinda films) i find it far more enjoyable; maybe i've grown to understand the characters a bit more.

Story of a rag-tag group of Dublin kids who form a Soul band, they have a good try, but they wind up going nowhere.

It's a lovely little slice of life of Dublin's worst bits, and while it takes a Mary Poppins view of reality, the characters are still enticing, the kind of people you would enjoy having as friends.

I grew up listening to Soul, so maybe that wasn't as big of a revelation as it was for many people (this film was a rather massive success in EU), but i would still give this film a solid
7/10

Jack Irish 8/10

If you're in Oz or NZ you've probably heard of the movies but this is the tv serial. It's basically a 5-6 hour movie. It's listed as season 03 but I'm pretty sure this is the first 6 part installment.

I like this franchise because of the intricate stories and the way they're developed. I also really like the characters.

There are some plot holes as you might expect and there is some overacting but neither is enough to jolt you back to reality. It's a solid 8 in my opinion.

Hitman - Agent 47 7/10

Pretty good action flick. Not really into fight sequences so can't judge that but a variety of chases and a few pretty cool moves by the agent. Aside from the broad strokes, I didn't see where they were going with it until near the end, but that could be just my being inattentive, stupid or whatever. I didn't like the lead actor as much as I did Tim Oliphant from the first movie but he definitely grew on and decided he was a worthy replacement.

How to Build Everything - 9/10

This is sort of like How It's Made but for large scale devices and even buildings. So far I've seen segments on building a pipe organ (very cool), an Apache helicopter and a sports stadium with mobile roof and playing field.

Two of the hosts are pretty cute and the delivery, unlike HIM, is very funny at times. It's sort of geek humor but it's still funny.

I like How It's Made; I'll catch it on TV occasionally. Never heard of this but it sounds like I'd like it even more. Where did you see it?

Finished Season One of The Good Wife last night, watched more than 1/2 of the Special Features on the last DVD (#6), too. Great to have that perspective, although I was tipped me off about something in upcoming seasons, I think (was glad to hear it anyway, but beware if you don't want a spoiler).

I went to my library's website to put a hold on Season Two and saw that my wait is very likely over a month so I bought it on ebay and put a hold on Season Three.

I still haven't completed Breaking Bad or The Wire. I'll likely finish The Good Wife before finishing those. There's a little violence in The Good Wife, but I like the fact that it's a very rare feature, unlike those other series, where there's an addiction to violence (drugs, too). I'm not a Pollyanna (my mom was), I can handle violence in cinema, but I don't need it!

Is there really no way to read Netflix movie reviews from their app? I can only do it on their desktop website (under movie's details).

ride along 2 - bad/10 - i think i LOL'd about a total of 3 times the whole movie. ice cube over acted as usual trying to be super hard, and kevin hart just was not that funny. all he did was talk too much, it reminded me of chris tucker in rush hour where he was more annoying than funny. i enjoyed the first one, but this wasn't even more of the same. it was more of the same but trying way too hard. and the whole "video game" driving scene was just bad.

Risen - 7/10

Acting wasn't great but I watched it to the end mainly because it captured the mystical elements of the gospel stories and added some flourishes that I liked. Objectively this is probably a 6 not a 7 but it's going to appeal to a certain, not necessarily religious, group.

It also captures the brutality of the times giving you a stark contrast with the gospel message. It's not a direct juxtaposition for the most part. That would be too heavy handed. But I think it's part of what they want to convey.

I think to really enjoy it, you need to have some interest in religion. It's not preachy in an overt way but there are definitely some basic points they're trying to convey.

Purge 8/10

Told largely in flashbacks, this film begins by introducing two seemingly dissimilar characters first meeting. The story quickly progresses to reveal both are victims; one a victim of the comunist purge of facists in Estonia, the other the victim of sex trafficking.

The major theme of the film is the life of the older woman--unrequetted love, suffering, hardship, selfishness and sacrifice. The younger woman's appearance and crisis serve as a catalyst for the elder to reexamine and reevaluate her own life.

This film has a number of very graphic and very traumatic scenes, including rape, torture and murder. Not recommended for young viewers.

oh boy oh boy oh boy

big week just passed; i watched:

Event Horizon - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119081/reference

isn't this film everyone's guilty pleasure? each time i watch it, it gets better.
i know, it's bad .. but it's a good bad?

really cool horror, uses some corny themese but delivers in every aspect, grossly unerrated.

7.5/10

and also

Contagion - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1598778/reference

Steven Sodeberg knows how to make his films, but the kind of films he knows how to make are not this kind of film. Contagion feels like it desperately wants to be a human drama, more centered on the way the situation affects the personality of the characters, rather than the plain events, but instead it comes across as the latter, and the techno soundtrack doesn't do him any favors either.

shame because it's even a good "virus film".

6.5/10

and then i watched

Sing Street (2016) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3544112/reference

out now.
same guy who convinced me to watch Risen, we saw the trailers before we went and i told him in a grave voice "are you sure you want to watch this"; looked like a soppy growing up story of a kid who falls for an older girl.

was i wrong! great film in a style similar to The Commitments, all original songs, but not quite a Musical, many great characters, good writing, it's a really fine film that i recommend to everyone here.

7.5/10

next in the playlist will be Contagion (1995) and Freedumb! (Jim Jeffries, 2016).

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong - 7.5/10: a decent date flick where you're rooting for the relationship to develop right from the start. You'd think a movie with 2 people walking and talking is slow and dull, but the back & forth really worked. The scenery is amazing and they even get into some cultural perspectives (white guy & white-bred asian girl). The ending may leave you wanting more but *Spoiler*
they are married IRL so you do get your happy ending.

I was talking to my mom last night and she recommended checking out Tyrant. She said she thought it would be something I'd like. I had heard of the show but didn't have any idea what it was about. I didn't realize it's in its third season so I watched the pilot and definitely liked it. I noticed Howard Gordon as a producer (and maybe co-creator?) who I remember from 24, too. I'm looking forward to watching some more episodes.

event horizon isn't really underrated at all. everyone likes that movie and it's known as one of the better horror/scifi flicks out there.

tyrant is an entertaining summer show, nothing more. the acting is terrible, the budget is clearly low because the sets are terrible, the story is completely unbelievable and out there, and everyone speaking english in the middle of the middle east with what are clearly fake accents is laughable. oh and did i mention, the acting is REALLY REALLY bad?

that said, i've seen every episode and my wife and i both enjoy it for what it is. and the presidents wife is hot as shit.

Sam Neill is oddly creepy in movies. In the Mouth of Madness is great with him too.

Star Trek: First Contact 6?/10 - I watched this because it popped up in Netflix and kinda background noise while on the PC. Pretty campy Star Trek stuff. Anyway, what really got me was Picard going into the Holodeck and using a tommy gun to kill him some Borgs. Now, I get the idea that the Borg can "adapt" to particle weapon frequencies. So why didn't the crew just replicate themselves some AKs and RPGs and go to town on the Borg? Seemed like a pretty massive hole in the idea of "The Borg".

In the Mouth of Madness is freaking incredible. Love that movie and Neill is AMAZING in it.:thumbsup:

I love Event Horizon; real soft spot for that flick. Has anyone here watched Pandorum? Fan of that one too; they are both a bit schlocky, but also entertaining. I'm a fan of Ben Foster too, so that helps.

I didn't think the acting was any worse than any other typical TV series I've seen, though I've only watched the first episode and I wasn't paying strict attention to it. We'll see, though.

I like Pandorum a lot. And yeah Ben Foster is on my man crush list. :awe:
