i watched
Calvary (2014) -

Great big powerful performance by Brendan Gleeson, i was honestly thinking "how can he be so good" most of the time.
The story of a Irish priest in a small town, seen through an unusual frame - in one week, he will be killed.
In the confessional, an unknown man tells him how a priest used to rape him, and therefore he will kill him, because the killing of a good priest will bring more shame to the catholic church.
It's truly not about the story, but about the performances. Brenda Gleeson delivers with confidence and superb skill. One of the finest film actors we have, after the passing of PSH.
Great film, i had not yet seen
The Guard (2011) -
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1540133/reference
when this came out, and i had mistaken it for a story about the church and about a priest, when it's neither - it's the story of a man.
..and had therefore not seen it.
While i would rather recommend The Guard, as it's funny black comedy rather than an introspective (can i haz adjective?), they are both great films, with Calvary being the superior one, if not the more accessible of the two.
My vote for both:
BrendanGleeson/10 you could watch him act out taking a dump and you would like it
or
8/10
and since i woke up really early i also re-watched
The Commitments (1991) -

better than i had remembered it; i recall feeling very sad at the dark ending, and not enjoying much the performances of the non-professional actors.
Now, several years later (and watching it not dubbed, which turns out is quite important in these kinda films) i find it far more enjoyable; maybe i've grown to understand the characters a bit more.
Story of a rag-tag group of Dublin kids who form a Soul band, they have a good try, but they wind up going nowhere.
It's a lovely little slice of life of Dublin's worst bits, and while it takes a Mary Poppins view of reality, the characters are still enticing, the kind of people you would enjoy having as friends.
I grew up listening to Soul, so maybe that wasn't as big of a revelation as it was for many people (this film was a rather massive success in EU), but i would still give this film a solid
7/10
