i watched, again, both Vanilla Sky and Eyes Wide Shut, trying to digest the whole thing this time. i failed.
so, with a lot of skipping (maybe 2 hours of viewtime between the two), i'm under the impression that both films are inconclusive. Vanilla Sky is a film about a guy in suspended animation having a dream, and this dream is bugged. I don't know how exactly i am supposed to relate to the protagonist, and on top of that Tom Cruise doesn't do drama well. The "mystery" of the two girls and his confusion on which one is which could be mildly interesting, where it not for the fact that, as soon as this element is introduced, the film goes "ha ha, it was just a joke, you are dreaming" which pisses me off because i just wasted an hour of my time.
Eyes Wide Shut is about a guy. That's it, really.
There's this guy, and he's a guy. His wife tells him some shit that pisses him off so he goes out and he's .. gonna do some guy thing, to show that bitch!
But instead he finds himself in some situations which kinda look weird, but if the main draw of the film is supposed to be this reckless surrealism, i'm afraid our friend Stanley Kubrick is too much of a good boyscout, because when it comes to doing weird stuff, masked orgies got nothing on me.
Feel free to fill in the missing pieces.
I also watched American Ultra, because i feel sorry for "Landis Jr.", given that his dad directed two epic films which have ruled my childhood, Animal House and The Blues Brothers.
it's crap.
The action sequences are badly shot and frankly uninteresting, while the serious parts are cringy AF, and the stoner comedy is barely amusing. If you want to watch a film that does a successful mashup of two unrelated styles, watch the immensely superior Mr. Right. I could see American Ultra working with proper actors, better dialogue, and a complete script re-write. And more money. aww you know what, just burn the damn film.
