War Dogs - 7/10 - better than I thought it would be. really felt like Lord of War though.

Tarzan (the new one) - 2/10 - I don't know you can make Tarzan be boring but they sure did. Holy crap this was bad. The CGI was terrible too.

Sniper: Special Ops - 2/10 - lol, i guess Steven Seagal is getting to old. He's supposed to be the star I though, but sat in a chair most of the movie, and he didn't have many scenes. The movie is called SNIPER but there's only sniping in the beginning and he actually breaks his sniper rifle in the beginning. Its pretty bad direct to dvd movie.

I finished Rectify last night. It wasn't my favorite season but the final two episodes were worth it. Sad to see that show go

Movies :
Rogue One - 9/10 - I thought it was everything that 1, 2, 3 and to a lesser part 7 were not. Oh, but DBOX seats, which was something like 8$ extra for, 0/10- what a waste of money.
Brooklyn - 7/10 - Watched this one for the wife but it ended up being pretty good. It wasn't particularly exciting or anything but it's a nice uneventful story to watch.
Now you See Me 2 - 5/10 - Nowhere near as good as the first, but it gets a 5 for 2 Woody's at the price of one.

TV:
The OA - 5/10 - It starts off slow, then picks up but never really goes anywhere. I was quite unhappy with the ending, hopefully if there is a season 2 it actually goes somewhere.

The OA - shit/10.

really. We mostly enjoyed it through the ride despite the overt melodrama with the 5 kids/old lady and their lives (that whole premise always felt forced and I never bought into it), and the clear intent of the creator to make us believe that Yoga or some Chakra bullshitwhatever is the center of existence....but holy crap the ending. What the hell was that nonsense?

Screw that show. Those ~ 7 hours could have been spent watching re-runs of Married with Children.

SO, the never-ending American trauma of school shootings is going to be defeated with public displays of Yoga? --and that didn't even do anything! What utter dreck, especially coming out of nowhere. This movie embraces the unforgivable "it was all a dream!" cliche and further tosses in some random nonsense claptrap at the very end.

Yea I couldn't get into it either. And I got at least halfway through the 2nd episode. It's just too slow for me.

I finished off both seasons of Marco Polo: 9/10

I don't know the history or how accurate the series is, but I found the series highly entertaining and looking forward to more.

Well, it is far more likely that Marco Polo never existed than him ever being real, so I would go with that as being fiction.

(The only record of a "Marco Polo" is this name attached to this account of a travel through the Orient--but no historic records within China or Venice and other places where he supposedly lived to corroborate his existence. While the book was published and known at the time, there is no record of him, or supposed relatives ever having existed.)

Sully - 8/10 - enjoyed the movie and I still don't know if there is a bad movie Tom Hanks has done. The aftermath was pretty whack if that is how the investigation really went.
Volunteers. It was on HBO / HBO Go a while back. Old movie. Absolutely terrible.

I've been watching some documentaries about ISIS and The Cartel on Netflix the past few days. Those topics just fascinate me. The ones I've watched are:

- Cartel Land
- ISIS Women Unveiled
- One about Radical Muslims in London but I don't remember the name and can't find it on Netflix anymore

Anyone have any documentaries on Netflix or Amazon prime that are in this category that they recommend?

3% is subbed right? It's on my list. Speaking of which, Borgen is pretty good. The only thing I don't like about it is that for the first season at least there doesn't seem to be any overarching plot to tie the episodes together. I mean there are threads of course but no subplots that carry over from episode to episode. That said, each of the half dozen or so ones I've seen so far have been quite good. Self-contained but very good.

Orange is the New Black - 8.5/10

This really is a fantastic series. Very little happens the way you expect it to and all of the characters are distinctive and entertaining. There's some overacting and stereotyping but it's not awful or distracting. It's definitely bingeable. Three seasons so far with a fourth coming probably this summer sometime.

The Minimalists. Tough to put a number on because its a documentary that depends entirely on your interpretation of the content and your world view. For me, roughly 6 to 6.5/10, but I know some that love it and I can see why.

This documentary has two messages, imo. First, you don't need possessions to be happy. Ok fine. These guys are expert hipsters with power levels over 9000. Have some charisma and a message about being happy. Can't fault them for their message - happiness is good. Wanna be a minimalist? Have at it. No sweat to me. But that leads me to the second message. I think the doc is more about leading a fulfilling life than it is promoting being a minimalist. From this perspective, it shows people that are (said to be, actually. a major flaw in the movie is there is no real way of knowing that they're in any way telling the truth. All they do is say they were miserable when they made a ton of money and then became happy without it. It looks like they're happy hanging out as friends and travelling across the country instead of working. I'd be happy doing that too.) miserable early in their adult lives, and then find a way to make themselves happy and dive in with both feet. I'm all for that. Fill your boots. I think this is actually a much stronger message that unfortunately falls very flat due to the actual content of the doc. It follows them around speaking engagements, which is incredibly dull. No one should have to care about that. If it was about these two guys working with some other people to transition to a minimalist life, that would be great to watch and MUCH more meaningful.

But the movie is rife with hypocrisy, and it actually gets called out on that hypocrisy in the movie by an old black man that attends one of their engagements. I'm sure that's included intentionally but its really funny to see. Also hypocritical that a movie that espouses reducing consumption is available ON NETFLIX and immediately after it is over you are prompted that "you might like these shows too....". I get that Netflix is the medium and not the message, but Netflix is also a message.

TLDR; Minimalists, 6.25/10, YMMV.

Fargo Season 1

7/10

This got outstanding reviews, I thought it was good but a little too derivative of the movie and the way some things play out is a littl too convenient and simplistic. Also not a fan really of Tom Hanks son, dude just isn't a very good actor. And hes in the bulk of it.

Hidalgo 6.5/10

It wasn't a bad movie but too typically Hollywood. However it was entertaining and I liked the historical aspect. But being a Hollywood movie there were a number of emotionally satisfying scenes.

Blackhat - <? - 10

I couldn't finish this. The acting I thought was just abysmal and while I was following the plot it just seemed completely mechanical and uninspired.

Rogue One 8/10 - One of the best Star Wars movies yet.
High reviews for me just make me wonder what kinds of movies people watch to give this such a high score. The character development was nonexistent and it jumped around waaaaaaay too much in the beginning. It literally felt like the movie didn't start until the final battle. I was bored throughout most of the movie.

The Force Awakens which I didn't much like because they couldn't come up with a half original plot, at least that had good character development and the pacing was done well.

The characters in Rogue One, I did not care about one bit. I'm a big Star Wars fan too.

There's a "Saudi Arabia uncovered" doc that I started watching but had to stop for some reason, forgot to come back to it. It's pretty good.

Well it's graded on the Star Wars curve. So it's probably a bit weighted. I thought Force Awakens was mediocre, so seeing a refreshing change of pace makes me excited.

I didn't like the jumping around in the beginning but it wasn't too bad and smoothed out. I liked the characters - they weren't developed enough but enough to get some attachment to them. The ending was the best - you never see a usually feel good bad guy vs good guy blockbuster end like that. So that gave it a huge boost.

Agree about grading on a curve. After Awakens, the bar was set pretty low. But even objectively I thought Rogue One was a competent movie. Not great by any means but it checked all of the essential boxes. It had a nice linear plot that was easy to follow. It had a few different layers of conflict that felt natural and not contrived. Granted I never really felt all that emotionally invested in any of the characters, but meh, I'm not really looking for that in this sort of movie. The plot moved along at a good clip and there was enough action to keep things interesting. I was happy with the sfx. And I agree about the ending. It was nice to see them switching things up.

I think that you just don't like this sort of move. The thing people seem to miss about Rogue One is that although set in a Sci-Fantasy universe it is actually a heist movie, more similar to Oceans Eleven than The Force Awakens or A New Hope. Heist moves often jump around at first setting up the reason for the heist, and then settle down into the plan and execution. This one had a bit more action then a normal heist movie, but I think that is a artifact of our times more than the movie type, Hollywood is just addicted to big explosions and gunfights right now.

I agree with all of this. After the 2nd episode the entire show reeked of "making shit up as it goes along" for the rest of the time. It was like they wanted to be the Wachowskis, but had the skill level of college writing majors. It's too bad because I really liked the premise based on the trailer.

I think you guys summed it all up quite nicely. After the disaster that was the prequels and the lame attempt that was the Force Awakens. This was quite nice. Enough so that I am actually looking forward to what Disney comes out with next.

The Imitation Game. 4/10 Watched it on Netflix expecting something slightly less than A Beautiful Mind. All I got was cheese oozing out of the TV and Syfy channel quality CGI. Netflix's shows has better production quality. WTF were the raving critics smoking? There were two very good moments, maybe three. Maybe I just hate melodramas.
