"Hail, Caesar!" 8.5/10 (HBO Go)

I like most Coen Bros. films and I really liked this one. It might even be a 9/10. I was falling asleep the first time I watched it on HBO Go. Then I caught it airing live while I was troubleshooting a TV issue and watched the second half again. Like "The Big Lebowski," you get a lot more out of it from successive viewings. It feels like there's a bit of Wes Anderson in this. I kept wondering what Roger Ebert would have thought. Seeing the depiction of behind-the-scenes Hollywood cinema from that era was fascinating. The acting was excellent. Subtle humor made me laugh out loud multiple times.

Yeah. I'm leaning a bit closer to 9/10 now.

The Lobster 7/10

Hmm.. interesting. The idea sounded like it make for a "fun" movie, but the "quirky" nature of the plot/setting was completely deadpanned and the brutality and depravity of the characters and society prevented too much levity. An interesting watch. Once.

I think that you just don't like this sort of move. The thing people seem to miss about Rogue One is that although set in a Sci-Fantasy universe it is actually a heist movie, more similar to Oceans Eleven than The Force Awakens or A New Hope. Heist moves often jump around at first setting up the reason for the heist, and then settle down into the plan and execution. This one had a bit more action then a normal heist movie, but I think that is a artifact of our times more than the movie type, Hollywood is just addicted to big explosions and gunfights right now.

There are many good heist movies and yes, I love GOOD heist movies but because the character development was so bad in this movie, the whole movie failed. This is no where near the Ocean movies at all. Even the weakest Ocean movie, Ocean's Twelve, is much better than Rogue One.

The only thing I thought that was weird about Rogue One was that Jyn Erso goes from not giving at shit one iota about the Rebellion to leading an unauthorized mission for it almost in the snap of your fingers. I thought it was a rather ridiculous 180 but I'm assuming they did that because they didn't want to make the movie longer (and possibly more boring) by showing her change of heart. I think it still could've been done a lot better but overall it's a minor criticism. Other than that I liked the movie quite a bit. Also Felicity Jones marry me plz k thx

I'd agree on The Lobster being around a 7/10, but it is well worth a watch.

Is pretty much a Kurt Vonnegut dystopian future vibe going on there more or less.

Children of Men - I should be ashamed for putting this off for so long. I had no idea how good it really was. I can't find any reason why it isn't 10/10. I saw it last night and already want to re-watch it.

i wasn't as impressed as you were.

i had the fortune of seeing this in the theaters, and of all things, i appreciated the sound editing the most - the battle for the building is amazing. along with the sound, all the production is exquisite, direction, camerawork, makeup, lighting, can't think of a single thing wrong.
clive owen is ... hmm .. ok, i guess. his character's role is to *be* the man who has a wave of uncontrollable events wash over him, but i feel a different actor could have contributed more.
i'm ok with the small role by michael caine but not particularly extatic seeing him play the same f* part in every film.
i cannot commend on julianne moore's preformance as i have a strong bias in her favour.

the plot is interesting, but the story itself really doesn't seem to go anywhere.

if there is a message of salvation, i either missed it or i wasn't convinced; to be honest, i found the "ermagherd, no moar babies" thing to be more interesting that the "ermagher, a babie!" and was hoping for the film to go in some Andromeda Strain -like direction, where the actual reason behind the infertility is discovered thanks to this girl.

i also have no sympathy for weak-willed characters.

it's a really well done film, and everyone should watch it, but for what i was left with when the film ended, i would vote it 7.5/10.

Assassin's Creed - 5/10 (for fans of the games) I didn't have high expectations, but it was still worse than I thought. It gets points for decent fights that reflect the game combat well, and decent camera work mimicking some of the recognizeable game mechanics well. Outside of that though, the story was a mess and the pacing was terrible. Most of the story was spent in the present day and it just didn't work.

This movie is messed up but must be seen at least once. Depressing but incredible.

There's a "Saudi Arabia uncovered" doc that I started watching but had to stop for some reason, forgot to come back to it. It's pretty good.
I watched it yesterday, it's pretty messed up how they live life there.

I started watching "Cultura Narcotico" but I ended up turning it off because I thought it would be more about the cartels and narcos, but it was like about singers and shit.

Bosch, season 2 - 7.58/10

Binge watched Bosch, season 2 this weekend. I liked it even more than season 1. Maybe less action, less weirdness, but better written, with a more intricate story line. Similar to the approach of season 1, where they took two seemingly disparate cases and gradually intertwined them, so that was a bit unoriginal. Still, well done.

Just finished Man in the High Castle season 2 there are some slow parts but damn i cannot wait for season 3 to start now....

8/10

I'm about halfway through season 2, but I've been lax on watching it somewhat as the wife isn't a fan.

I like the show, but it is one of those shows you have to have some tolerance when it slows down sometimes.

Won't rate it yet as I haven't watched all of season 2.

All three seasons of Black Mirror are very good I thought, I recently binge watched them all and would give them about a 9/10 myself, and I am usually leery about giving a series a 9 to begin with.

I thought they were surprisingly well made.

I've been blown away with how amazing this is. I've connected with almost every episode even though there is absolutely nothing I have in common with it. "The Entire History of you" was so brilliant.

Arrival - 4/10
Went in with high expectations and left disappointed. Could blow so many plot holes through this it's not even funny. Hopefully it's been out long enough to not need spoiler tags, but *spoiler complaints* - A time traveling, advanced tech race says they will need our help in the future yet they can't understand our language? Couldn't time travel to the future to get a dictionary? Also, our military elite with the highest levels of clearance go rogue because they were watching a Glenn-Beck-talking-head-type on TV who said we need to attack? Let alone steal enough explosives on their own to secretly plant an attack? lmao. Not to mention, aliens knew of the explosives 4 minutes before it blows up, yet one of the two dies from it after they adequately protect the two main human characters? Gimme a fucking break. Also, the time-is-not-linear theme has been done a lot better in many other movies. I will say I did like the special effects and the way they did the aliens, but the shitty story ruined it. Luckily I only paid $2 to see it.

Bad Santa 2 - 0.05/10
Turned it off in the first half hour, maybe it got better but absolute shit. Billy Bob's character is nothing like the first and they try their hardest to make every scene about cursing, sex, or alcohol to where it's super try-hard and kills the story by trying to make the characters edgy/sleazy. Turned him into a caricature vs the first, which I actually enjoyed. Total shit.

^^ dirty pirate ... "turned it off" after first half hour.

Deepwater Horizon - 8/10 - enjoyed this movie quite a bit and it is pretty interesting to see how stuff on the oil rigs go down and how it all works. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate but still cool either way and the set was good. I don't know the full story of how it really went down but damn, if that is how it went down, BP is a bunch of fucking idiots and their greed was the only reason the huge disaster happened. Sound is great in the movie too.

fun fact about deepwater horizon - it grossed the most amount of money in the theaters around the area where the disaster actually took place.

Arrival - 4/10

Everything in this post will be spoilers. You have been warned.

A time traveling, advanced tech race says they will need our help in the future yet they can't understand our language?
They could understand our language just fine, the whole point was that their language was the key to understanding time. We had to not only understand their language but start to think in it. To do that they needed someone to really immerse themselves into the language and the only way to really force someone to do that was for them to work on understanding it from the ground up. The translator had to change the way they thought to understand the language.

Also, our military elite with the highest levels of clearance go rogue because they were watching a Glenn-Beck-talking-head-type on TV who said we need to attack?

The Glenn-Beck-talking-head was a barometer on the fear people were feeling. It was a way to tell us how afraid everyone, including those generals, were.

Not to mention, aliens knew of the explosives 4 minutes before it blows up, yet one of the two dies from it after they adequately protect the two main human characters?

It was about teaching. They needed to demonstrate that they knew the future and that they could not always change it. Also being dead was not that big of a deal to them. If time is not linear then death is not an end.
