I watched this friday night. I made everyone leave the house ( except my wife) and told all my adult children to go away and not cal so I could watch it in peace. I thought it was pretty good even with a few plot holes. I'll probably watch it again sometime. 7 or 8 out of 10.

That was awesome! Remember when that one guy and that other girl had almost the same thing happen in that other movie?

I like the guy that wore shirts the best but yeah. The scene where they were breathing was pretty good too.

ok, saw it just because of your post.

i would rate Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 8/10

i agree Karen Gillan never looked better.
so much hotter than when she was Dr Who's companion.

negatives:
stereotypical 4 strangers come together and become friends in the end.
stereotypical you know that even tho they are down to their last life, they're not going to die.
stupid way for The Rock to lose a life and his reaction (or lack there of) to the dumb way he lost that life.

altho i do like the creative way Karen Gillan got down to her last life
Glad you liked it. Technically though, the two male characters were best friends once, but Hart's character grew (irony here) and became a superjock, running with a different (more popular) crowd.

i had a stab at Father Brown (TV) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2215842/

i had to watch this, because my father was a distributor for the "original" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069582/
And "original" because Father Brown has had several incarnations, just like Poirot or Sherlock Holmes.

Father Brown is very similar in style to Miss Marple; he's a catholic priest in a 1930s~1950s (depending on which serial) quaint English village. There's the incompetent police inspector, nosy neighbors,casual-exposition-sidekick, and every episode Father Brown notices something which helps him solve the crime.

I got to say, for what this is, it was very well made. The dialogue is fairly entertaining (mostly due to the source, the writings of G.K.Chesterton), the production is excellent, acting is ok, and the story was entertaining for a just-over-half-hour of time wasting.

Would recommend: 7/10

it's easy to find. If you are willing to do some digging, and want better acting and better dialogue, you want Jeeves & Wooster instead: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098833/
My wife watches that so I've seen quite a few, and I generally enjoy them. (Also, I find Nancy Carroll way more attractive than I should, which helps.) I've never made it through an episode of Jeeves and Wooster though. Go figure.

Speaking of Brit stuff, I had a go at something called Raised by Wolves this weekend and found it quite excellent. Honestly I only made it through the first episode because I had taken a break from work to eat and thus was too lazy to keep searching further, but I watched the next at my next meal break (the wife is out of town) and got thoroughly hooked. It is deliciously odd in that uniquely British way. I'd say maybe 7/10, maybe 8/10. Very earthy. Supposedly ABC is doing an American remake but even setting aside the almost universally horrid quality of American remakes of British or Commonwealth comedies, I can't image most of the humor being allowed in the States. Both the proggie left and the religious right would be up in arms.

The New World(2005) - 3/10

It sucks cause I really did want to like this film but what I can't shake is the fact that the film gets incredibly boring. It's a shame really because it starts off pretty good but somewhere around halfway through it just ceases to go anywhere. The 2nd half of the movie.... doesn't need to exist. The constant use of metaphors while the movie constantly beats you over the head with it's artsy angle does get old quick. This is an easy skip.

Breaking Bad - 10/10 - I watched this as it aired initially after binge watching the first 2 seasons, and this was my first time revisiting it. My wife hadn't seen it so we watched it together. Damn this show is such a masterpiece. The first 2 seasons were a lot slower than I remembered, but once Gus came into play, it was like full steam ahead and it did not slow down until the very end.

There were 2 things that really stood out to me the second go around.

1. I disliked Walt a lot more than I did the first go around. The first go around I was cheering for him until the very end for the most part. This time I saw him as much more of an asshole and rooted against him.

2. Skylar was way less annoying than the first go around. This probably falls in hand with #1 because I liked Walt more the first time around and Skylar was just annoying as shit to him and getting in his way, but she was actually just being very logical and full of sense, and I felt a lot worse for her this time around than I remembered.

you are not alone. i too find an entire episode in one go to be too much, i enjoy a 20 minutes or so round of J&W and then i go watch something else.

a show truly for a different age.

The Walt aspect was always a very difficult thing to get people to watch the show. "Yea it's this show about this science teacher with cancer that turns meth dealer, and he's great!"...doesn't really go over well. You do route for him the first season or so, and then you pass into disbelief at how manipulative he is. Such great scripting and acting on his part.

12 Strong - 9/10

Saw this in the Super EMAX theater (big screen) this weekend and man, I loved it. I thought in particular the production design was excellent. A YouTube channel I sub to, by a former Army Ranger, said they pretty much nailed Afghanistan whereever it is they filmed it. I think war movies can be full of cliches but I don't think this one was too full of them. Highly recommended if you like war movies; man it was great.

i cast my mind back and remembered a really good British TV show, called
Babylon - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3138900/

i really, *really* liked this show, but was beyond bummed when it ended after ONE season. Not cancelled, no. ENDED.

Seriously. (this is my serious face)

So, babylon is the entwining stories of various personnel of the London Metropolitan Police, from the directors and Chief of Police to the squaddies, and the various unsettling things that happen as the Borough is trying to rebrand itself.

In a way, this is quite close to The Thick Of It, the storylines follow similar plots, and in the good tradition of UK television, have no problem throwing the occasional massive fuckup or two in the story.

If you like realistic police stories (NOT CSI or Law & Order) but wish they were more realistic, but also that they had more drama, this is the show for you.

I'm not sure really WHERE you could find it, though. It's been a while, it aired in 2015. It's worth looking for it and watching, though.

7.5/10 because WHO THE HELL ENDS A SHOW AFTER 1 SEASON !

My wife and I saw Darkest Hour the end of last year and really enjoyed it. Oldman did a fabulous job portraying Churchill and showing, what had to be, 3 of the worst weeks of his life. The film did take some liberties with historical accuracy, not at all surprising, but they didn't bother me that much because I understood why those liberties were taken.
Churchill never road on the underground and talked to the people to get the inspiration to not cave to the pacifists. But the British people DID write to express their sentiment that they had NO interest in surrendering to the Germans. So, I can forgive the dramatic license as it didn't significantly alter the essence of what happened.
Also, some of the speeches occurred later than the events in the movie, but I get why that was done as well. I'd give it a 9/10. I hope Oldman gets his Oscar this year.

Darkest Hour -- 5.5/10 -- I wasn't moved to see this movie but a friend wanted my company so I went . . . so take my rather low rating under advisement. I know this history in and out, which is probably why I wasn't jazzed to see a 2 hour "cliff notes" dramatization, with the inevitable cut corners. Churchill never went down into the underground to take the pulse of the people. Indeed, the idea of that life-long patrician doing so is almost laughable. Lord Halifax's portrayal as scheming for the PM job was wildly, wildly overplayed, even if he was the most prominent legitimate voice of appeasement. And Churchill's relationship with the King, especially at one key point, was mostly a fabrication even if some elements "might" have happened to some lesser degree.

That said, I have to give Gary Oldman his due. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a leading candidate for an Oscar.

yep, that's how I felt about them the first way through--and is essentially how the show is written. Walt is the villain. He is supposed to be the worst of them all. ...at least, he's really no better than Gus or the Salamancas when he gets to the end.

2nd time through, I hated him even more, lol.

OK, it started off kinda sorta original but now Burn Notice has turned EXTREMELY formulaic. Getting bored.

I was going to warn you about that. I think I made it through two or three seasons before I stopped, since in between meh episodes there were some clever ones. Not because it got bad, it just was more of the same. I'll probably get back to it someday when there's nothing else I want to watch.

Phantom Thread -- 8/10 -- This is not a movie I would necessarily have chosen to see on my own, but a friend wanted to see it, and as it was the announced farewell acting role for Daniel Day Lewis, I went.

Not for everyone, but nevertheless an exquisite portrait of a weirdly difficult and obsessive upper class artist/aesthete and the broadly plebeian woman he chose as his mate, and how she withstood his prissy, narcissistic bullying and slowly but successfully adapted to the challenge of being married to him, and finally,
made him her bitch.

Roman J. Israel, Esq. - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6000478/

A so-so film with an amazing performance by Denzel Washington.

Roman J. Israel, Esquire is a curious character; he's been working since college for a small law film, filled with the best intentions but rewarded with little success. He still uses a CRT monitor, a roledex, works with paper only, and listens to a Walkman.
When his law firm partner dies and the law firm dissolves, he is hired by shark attorney Colin Farrell; Israel has a tumultuous change in his life, and although threatened by moral corruption, he manages to both maintain his integrity, and to emerge newly invigorated.

This film has had rather poor reviews, and i would be inclined to agree that there are some weak parts, as most of the important stuff is contained in the first half of the film, and not much happens for the second part. The ending is also fairly bland. But Denzel does his best, again, and the film is mesmerizing until the midpoint, when it's just "the story is done, we're gonna do a 1-hour wrap-up and a lazy conclusion".
This is otherwise some pretty solid dramatic entertainment and i would recommend this to most people here.

Had a boring weekend and watched some direct to video Antonio Banderas action flicks on Netflix

Security 5/10
Throw away movie but good enough to watch if you have nothing better to do or just need something on in the background. Antonio is an ex-military bad ass looking for work, gets a job as a security guard at a mall, and shit goes down first night on the job.

Acts of Vengeance 5/10
Same first sentence. Same old plot as every other revenge movie. Man's family is killed and he gets revenge.

I watched Breaking Bad years ago. I hope to revisit it someday when I have a girlfriend (yayyy divorce). I usually tell people that breaking bad broke TV for me. I say that because it had a 5 year story arch that was insane, incredible writing, incredible acting. It was amazing in every aspect! It actually makes it hard for me to "get into" any new TV series with story arcs.

Keep in mind that it was supposed to be 4 seasons long. Thus the conclusion to season 4 being what it was. Season 5 was added in the middle of filming season 4 (I think). So it was really an add on because of the shows popularity. To be honest, I wish it ended at 4 seasons. Season 5 was good but I think it peaked at the end of 4.

--------- ALTERED CARBON --------- Feb 2 release on Netflix
OK, I've heard enough ads for this already. The advertising is insane. Maybe it's because it's advertised on Pandora ALL THE TIME. I want to go in knowing nothing or close to it. is this show promising or not?

Pretty good summary:
Altered Carbon is based on the 2002 novel by Richard K. Morgan, a grim cyberpunk future where technology allows people to transfer their consciousness from one body to the next — if they can afford it. It’s a groundbreaking achievement. Murder victims can testify against their killers, and explorers can travel to distant planets. But there’s a downside: those who can afford to effectively live forever, jumping from cloned body to cloned body, consolidate their power for centuries and use it in disturbing ways.

So it sounds original! That's a plus.

Funny you talk about Alterd Carbon and the advertisements for it.

I had never heard of that show until I turned on Netflix last night to start The Punisher and it was the first thing that was highlighted.
