Straw Dogs 2011 - 6.5/10

Another gut wrenching thriller that was very difficult to watch at times as two diverse cultures come together in explosive fashion.

I need to see the original by the great Director, Sam Peckinpah.

They made a new one? Sounds lame. The original is awesome. One scene is pretty hard to watch, especially if you're like 15 years old (age of when I first watched the movie), but I'm sure you already know which one it is.

Blade Runner 2049 -9/10

Just watched the new Blade Runner and I thought it was excellent, it did a faithful job of getting the themes right and continues beautifully on from the first one.

Anyone do a prescreening of ready player one? I am super pumpppppped, but I missed the prescreening last week due to work. Is it as good as I hope it is?!

It was pretty neato, embedded videos, large file attachments, your good ol basics! I even had my design guy build a cool little logo.

Ready Player One:

I got a free pass to see it at IMAX yesterday. I thought it wasn't bad and better than I expected. Think old school genre games, Atari 2600. Lots of old 80s, 90s music, horror references. Some pretty funny scenes connecting the 80s/90s stuff together. I enjoyed some of the music. I instantly knew the ending because I grew up with it and knew one of the guys who found the secret in RL. As soon as I realized this movie was one big thing I knew for sure what it would be. But I am not saying anything else ;-)

I wasn't a fan of the avatars as I thought they looked a bit too immature and the action scenes were really cheesy. The movie kinda reminds me of Goonies meets TRON.
And I like how they poke fun of VR alot. That was hilarious.

Edited: I removed some references to avoid spoilers.

Dr Strangelove. 10/10 damn such a great movie showing the workings of a B52 flight crew on a Chrome Dome mission. James Earl Jones. Slim Pickings, George C. Scott.
A landmark movie to say the least. Making fun of the threat of nuclear holocaust was just what was needed at the time, it was a revelation. Well, it didn't make light of it, it made it seem possible but the comic aspect of the movie put into relief the absurdity of a lot of the political spectrum surrounding mutual deterrence.

@Muse why_u_no avatar

come on bro, you earned it
Yeah, I know, I'm just a really busy guy! I have tried, it didn't work, that was a long time ago, I'll try again, I have a great icon, just have to make it work. Maybe it has an embedded copy-write issue. If so, I can work around that. I used to use it as an avatar at Rotten Tomatoes Forums before they went all hay-wire (that was a huge travesty!).

Edit: There! How you like that?! Shazam!!!

The 39 Steps (Alfred Hitchcock, 1935) 10/10

Watched last night, I'd seen it a dozen years ago. I saw yesterday where it was rated #4 in the top 100 of the British Film Institute's critic's poll. It's considered one of Hitchcock's greatest, of course. Some of the greatest dialogue, really great casting and acting. Top notch.

Would anybody happen to know if a list exists anywhere that lays out all of the X files episodes that deal directly with the overarching alien conspiracy?

I'd like to rewatch that aspect of the series. I don't really need to see the standalone episodes again. I know I could just start each episode individually but it would be nice for continuity's sake to have a list handy and jump directly from episode to episode without having to watch some of each one to determine whether it's relevant to that aspect of the storyline.

ehm, ok, it's an unusual choice. given your nick as Muse i thought you might want to go with Salma Hayak's boobs as featured in the film Dogma. Because she's a Muse.

but, you do you.

meanwhile, i've been whittling away time by watching this channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4zKSynEH_sLA1TC8_kU0g
"Oliver Harper Retrospective & Reviews"

and specifically (among others)this video:
i have never known this film existed, or rather i might have some very vague reminiscence but i never watched it, and this is likely what i will watch now as i wait for my pizza dough to raise. I make my own pizza; i'm badass when it comes to food.

That guy's retrospective videos are pretty good, we share many opinions on most films, and he adds a lot of *actually interesting* trivia about the film that is worth knowing. He does seem to have a hard time criticizing films when they fail miserably (for example, his reviews of Highlander 2 is longer than the phrase "it's shit", so we disagree there) because he sees films as a collaborative effort of production rather than a finished product. It's not a point of view i am willing to condemn, but when we're talking about such mastepieces of stank such as Alien 3, i'm not really sure we need a retrospective video.

Probably my favorite movie, but ... How in God's name did you manage to name a few stars without mentioning THE star of the movie? (Although Scott was brilliant and stole the show.)

you mean the STARS. Three of them.

in order,
1. Peter Sellers (captain Mandrake)
2. Peter Sellers (US president Muffley
3. Peter Sellers (Dr Strangelove)

Yup. Would have been four, as I understand it. He fell off the bomb while shooting a scene and broke his leg, so they brought in Slim Pickens to play Major Kong.

Ah, link me! I've seen that movie 3 times, last time ~10 weeks ago. Link me! Can't get enough of Salma Hayak's boobs! I'd happily grab them with that hand you see in my avatar (with her permission, of course!).

Dude, I saw that February 7. I made this comment in my notes:

The interview of Salma Hayek is really the only real extra and it's fantastic. They edited it, lots of wipes, so they cut out stuff. It's just her talking at the camera. It's great!!!

Watched Trainspotting (Danny Boyle, 1995) 7/10 last night. My 3rd viewing, but not since 2010. That flick is outright porn in places. Just a wild ride, but I gotta say it didn't really work for me last night. Maybe partly I wasn't in the right mood. Haven't seen the sequel.

Yea the sequel was nowhere near as good. for me Trainspotting is a 9/10
Trainspotting makes a good realistic anti drug movie.

And speaking of unintentional anti drug movies Sid and Nancy 8/10 with Gary Oldman as Sid vicious is also a another excellent movie but difficult to watch sometimes. The scenes when Sid and Nancy visiting her parents in the USA were awesome.

I always thought the monster of the week episodes were much better than the over arching storyline that never went anywhere.

Thor Ragnarok - 5/10 - I should probably just stop watching Marvel movies at this point. They are all the same for the most part now a days. For the first half of the movie I thought I was watching a Will Ferrel movie or something - they were trying way too hard to be funny with everything just falling flat with nothing really happening. The second half was a bit better because stuff finally happened and there was some action, and the Hulk was the best thing about the movie. It still had a ton of "jokes" that fell flat and I heard crickets chirping though. But in the end it's a very big fat MEH and just another run of the mill Marvel movie.

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay (2018, animated): 7.5/10

Originally I was going to give it a 6.5/10 because:
1) Barely any Harley Quinn in it.
2) she was badly drawn

gave it an extra point because of the plot twist.
I didn't see it coming. +1 for surprising me.
altho the plot twist made no sense. just chalk it to suspension of disbelief and accept it.
