ok guys
i didnt want to talk about this
but i saw Annihilation

i am divided. i think the visuals were fantastic, and i think the story is pretty good, very close to what the original Stalker was - it focuses on the characters and how they interact with "the zone". i think it was well made and inspired in some places. the all-female case was not horrible, but ..

is natalie portman the worst actress to have ever existed? or - this is a genuine question - is it that today staring ahead blankly, considered valid acting?

the characters were not very deep, the ending is an excuse for not having an ending planned, the story was .. they could have tried harder. Or rather, with those great visuals, they could have concentrated the most film in the first half, and gone totally psychedelic mindfuck for the second half.

i would still recommend this film, because i really liked the special effects and the photography.

6.5/10

ehm, ok, it's an unusual choice. given your nick as Muse i thought you might want to go with Salma Hayak's boobs as featured in the film Dogma. Because she's a Muse.

but, you do you.
Admit it, my avatar's awesome!!!

I only watched the 1st 20min of the sequel and turned it off.
That's enough for me, won't touch Trainspotting II.

I pulled out my Pink Panther set last night and got about 1/2 way through The Pink Panther and decided it's absolute crap and hit eject (2/10, it was really bugging me) . Then put in the sequel, A Shot in the Dark (8/10). Now that's pretty damn good. Didn't finish, will in the next few days, got about 1/2 way through. I don't know if I've seen the other sequels but think I have most all of them. I figure to dip into them shortly, see if I like them.

Natalie Portman is really smart. It was probably a lousy vehicle that she couldn't get into so she didn't register the emotion/part. You can't judge an actor from one performance.

So, remember that heartfelt little short called Cargo? They went and made a whole movie based on it...and it doesn't look half bad.

Rome - 9/10 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384766/?ref_=nv_sr_1
This one I really liked. Almost as much as GoT. I hope it was historically accurate, I can't have an opinion since I don't know roman history. Lucius Vorenus and Gaius Iulius Caesar are great characters.

Made in Abyss - 7/10 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7222086/?ref_=nv_sr_1
It's just me but I don't like to watch 12yolds doing shit or especially watching their story. I've watched it only because of rave reviews. Yes it's got great art style (except kids heads) nd animation and gets better towards the end. +1 to the grade just for last episode.

Wild Wild Country -- 9.5/10 -- Netflix. Six hours of gobsmacking WOW. Heyyyyy, it's a cult favorite!

"Set aside a six-hour window for the weekend of March 16, because you're going to want to binge the Netflix documentary series Wild Wild Country. Screened at the Sundance Film Festival in one exhausting, gripping gulp, it's a slice of partially forgotten history in which real life just keeps getting more and more outlandish and implausible.

[...]

Wild Wild Country is a story without obvious or consistent heroes or villains, just a lot of people who are convinced they're heroes or wouldn't admit to us if they were villains. It's also a story in which the second half becomes an increasingly crazy progression featuring mass poisonings, Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, attempted murder, law enforcement raids, extraditions, exiles and beavers (just you wait) without the truth becoming any clearer. Almost everything we're told feels like spin, delusion or urban legend and the inability to fully believe a single character produces an unsettling ambiguity, denying the basic pleasure of "answers." That makes Wild Wild Country a worthwhile thought experiment in addition to a yarn that is, as the title promises, doubly wild."

Paucity of good movies out right now (imho.) The only one I really want to see is The Death of Stalin. But neither of my two main male movie-going buddies are available right now, and none of the females I know are huge murderous Commie dictator fans. Despite decidedly mixed reviews -- people either seem to love or hate it -- I just know I'm going to be rolling in the aisles.

Meanwhile, on TV:

Here and Now -- 8/10 -- Interesting mystical subplot that the show doesn't hit you over the head with, even as it explores other themes.

Re: that subplot: "Absolutely love the fact that I have no idea what ties Ramon and his therapist together. This has been the best storyline by far, and I'm curious if it somehow ties the whole family together. For the people bashing the show after one episode, give me a break. These characters have so many layers and the story seems to get deeper and deeper, therefore 60 min isn't enough. In this world of instant gratification as a norm, slow down....Watch ALL the episodes. If you still can't get into it, Peace. Go watch your teen mom or whatever."

Jim Jeffries Show -- 8/10 -- I love the guy, love, love, loved his old, short-lived sitcom, and love this "political comedy" show.

Here's the first ep of it's second season. From 3:45 in:

"You should know that Marco Rubio's received 3.3 million dollars from the NRA. So, it's so good to see him on TV. Normally you have to go to a Miami strip club to see a tiny Cuban dance for old white men's money."

I remember that dude and all his rolls royces brought up a town? ect, been meaning to watch it but just not enough time. Nice endorsement. That was also around the time with that chick prophet of similar vein who lived north of yellowstone NP.

When I first moved to Boulder in the late 80s I rented a room in a house full of Rajneeshees. One of the kids who lived there was an artist whose claim to fame was custom painting one of the Bhagwan's Rolls Royces. It was interesting. There was me and this cute girl from New Jersey who was a civil engineering student at CU, and everyone else was out in La La Land.

Absentia 9/10. Show is on Amazon, and just really damn good. Really had no idea who was behind the whole thing, keeps you guessing, acting (other than the husband) was pretty good. Couldn't stop watching, finished in two days.

After being declared dead in absentia, an FBI agent must reclaim her family, identity and innocence when she finds herself the prime suspect in a string of murders.

The Terror on AMC - 8/10 for the 2 hour premier

This looks quite good with the interweaving of hints of the supernatural and interesting drama. I watch very little tv these days but this is going to be on my watch list. I'm a little biased since I really love period dramas and this takes place in the mid-nineteenth century aboard two exploratory ships trying to chart a path through the arctic. Some very well known actors in this like Ciaran Hinds and Jared Harris. If you don't recognize the names you recognize the actors.

The Last Jedi - 8/10 - I'm not a huge SW fan or anything, those movies are just kinda there to me, but I enjoyed it for the most part. It took a while to get going but once it did I was a fan of it. It didn't seem as long as it was either.

It's a great movie if you're not a Star Wars fan. If you are, it's not.

I find these two oddly contrasting in some ways... and probably a bit more similar in others. Although, I think you might be ignoring that one important aspect of Made in Abyss would be completely lost if they weren't younger kids -- or rather young kid and robot-thing-that-looks-like-a-kid. The whole idea is experiencing the characters' loss of innocence as they go from a fairly happy-go-lucky life up on the surface to experiencing the ever-worsening hell throughout their descent into the abyss.

The Commuter (or Taken 4 a Train Ride) - 7/10 - I liked it, although much of the 60 year old ex cop beating the shit out of all these younger guys with ninja skills was a bit over the top. Saw the 'twist' a mile away, but was a decent popcorn flick (mind you - I haven't watched any of the Taken films...but this could have been one). It even has the 'you have a particular set of skills' line in it.

Justice League - 4/10 - seriously..how do these suck so bad?

Pacific Rim 3D in VR - Anyone who thinks 3D is..meh - this is the way to watch a 3D movie.

We also watched the first two episodes. Enjoyed them both, good pace for the show. Not dragging, but setting up future events nicely. I agree about the actors, I knew them by face, just not by name. Set to record from here on out.

Haven't watched any of this yet, but I'm recording them. The real life topic of human endurance pushed to the limit is fascinating, fertile ground for drama. I hope they don't feel the need to overdo it by introducing some sort of mythical monster that is stalking them. The Arctic is forbidding enough, without turning it into some sort of Marvel f*cking comic.

I'm pretty sure that is exactly what it is about. That is certainly how it was sold and hit on in the premier but it is too early to say for sure. I have this feeling it has to do with Eskimo legends.
