Jay and Mike are proud of you, zin.

I watched

Mad Max: Waterworld

Starring Kevin Kostner as Max, Dannis Hopper as Bad Guy, and Jane Tipplehorn as Annoying Naked Lady.

Max is minding his own business but as always Civilization Is Uncivilized(tm) and Max has to help those who wronged him against those who wronged him but also are ugly.
A mcguffin is a girl and boom the bad guys expload and everyone reaches The Promised Land.

Ok so, this film bombed and honestly, there isnt much to like. Kostner does actually a pretty solid Max impersonation but Hopper is comedically bad, his character and scenes being grotesque while Max has more somber and dramatic scenes. From one scene of sadness, loss and existentialism, to a live-action version of Jarred's goblins in Labyrinth.

The costumes were done with too much realism leading everyone to look gray and indistinguishable, and while the film has tons of detail, it's not presented camera-ready, kind of the Transformers of the era.

Also the "realistic" setting grates against the Smokers ridiculousness, and many small details are also out of place. What exactly fuels the fire they grill their fish on, if they have no wood? How does max sell soil and make enough to buy a potted plant with as much soil in it?

The film isnt terrible, but as it often happens with expensive, fantastic settings, there wasnt one mind behind everything making sure it all works.

Still, it's more of a Mad Max film than Furi

I actually liked it a lot dennis Hopper was the glue here, the ballon was silly though. But I liked the postman as well even more.

Been watching "Who Is America?" Hilarious. Sometimes I can't tell whether they're just going along with the act or really that stupid.

Blue Valentine - 7.5/10.

NO no NO, a thousand times NO! Jaws works because you hardly ever see the shark. The best terror is the terror that you always know is there, but never really see. No one makes real horror movies anymore.

If the only thing that changed about Jaws was replacing the rubber shark with a well-done CG shark, the movie would have been better. The super-obvious fake shark pulls me out of the movie when it finally does appear.

Absolutely agree. Remember the original "Alien". Very little screen time for the critter and possibly the scariest movie Ive ever seen. The original "The Thing" was that way also.

Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino, 1992) 9/10

I bought the DVD over a dozen years ago, I think I never got past the torture scene. Ejected it again a few years ago. Watched the whole thing the other night. Tarantino said "It happens at every single screening. For some people the violence, or the rudeness of the language, is a mountain they can't climb. That's OK. It's not their cup of tea. But I am affecting them. I wanted that scene to be disturbing."

My mother wouldn't have gotten beyond square one in this movie. Her tolerance for movie violence was very low. This movie is IMO really up there on the "hard to take" scale. I'm sure there's worse, way worse.

Friend of mine, a movie buff, had told me that whenever it comes on he can't turn away, is compelled to watch. It just draws him in. I decided to give it another go. It's fascinating. Just read the plot at Wikipedia. I think they missed something. I think that Eddie was shot by Mr. Pink in the Mexican standoff. Had to be because nobody else pointed a gun at Eddie.

Avengers Infinity War - 5/10 - i need to just stop watching Marvel movies these movies are just all over the place now. The whole movie was like "ok we have spent 20 minutes with this group of super heros, lets move onto the next one!" for like 2 hours and 20 minutes. Just a bad movie.

Love the background here. I've seen Reservoir Dogs approximately 120 times. Unfortunately I saw it after seeing Pulp Fiction (several times in the theatre by that point), so, sadly, my impression was informed by all of the bluster surrounding PF. Anyway, it's cool to see someone enjoying the film removed from all of that nonsense. I actually go back to this or Inglorious Basterds (my favourite QT film) when I have QT fix.

Do you agree with me that Eddie was shot by Mr. Pink? I rewinded and replayed that bit several times and came to that conclusion.

I watched the rather good El Alamein
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0329042

About the disastruous efforts of WW2 Italy in their african campaign.

It's an italian film, in italian (though i suspect a dub exists), and it's full to the brim of that italian pessimism y'all love and cherish.

Good if you are in the mood for something foreign.

It's fun for me when my brain makes connections between actors and TV shows/movies.

I was watching Happy Gilmore, probably the funniest Sandler movie, and for some reason I always remembered the girl being Elizabeth Banks. Well, obviously it's not, but I still recognized the face. It was killing me. Where had I seen her before?

And then it hit me - She was Jack's ex-wife in LOST.

I watched an older movie that I seemed to have missed 11 years ago.
Talk to Me.
It's a true story based on the life of Ralph "Petey" Greene. About an ex-convict turned radio DJ/activist
and stand up comedian, in Washington DC, during the1960's and 70's.
It has a fine cast with Don Cheadle as Petey Greene and Chiwetel Ejiofor as his friend and mentor. Martin Sheen
and Taraji P. Henson co-star.
Some of the stereotyping was a little over-the-top, but this was the 60's. It was a flamboyant era at times.
Lots of great music on the soundtrack.
Really, an interesting story of Petey Greene's life who didn't really want the fame that he acquired.
He was happy being himself as that DJ at WOL radio.
I really liked it and gave it 8/10.

OTHERLIFE, Netflix, 6/10

Black mirror type of flick, interesting although done before in other forms story, good first 2/3ds and then goes to unintellegible downright crap. Still worth a view if nothing else is on.

Could have been a good movie, maybe a casualty of poor editing.

New marketing strategy?

I was in Houston last week. A group of high school age kids there told me they had been given free tickets to "Crazy Rich Asians". Now I just found out that the same thing happened here in my home town. Somebody is buying tickets for potential viewers to get the into them theater.

Is this happening nation-wide? If so maybe it's not a bad plan. Take some money from the marketing budget and just buy tickets for people. Create a bigger "buzz" for the movie you're trying to promote.

Saw some crappy netflix films. Wont recommend them, they arent worth it.

Return To Sender had an interesting premise, but the story was a mess and it ended up in lameville.

Secret in their Eyes was the same thing. Good premise, ruined by lazy storytelling.

I watched The Dressmaker

a 2015 film starring Kate Winslett. Set in the 50s in 'stralia, it's a cross between a Poirot murder mistery, a surreal Priscilla (with Hugo Agent Smith Weaving as a crossdressing policeman) and a family drama.

Winslett was sent out from the small ozzy town at the age of 10, apparently because she killed or caused a child to die, but she does not remember. She now returns, a skillful Haute Couture seamstress, to set things straight. It's no little help that her dressmaking skills win her everybody's favours.
Also starring one of the Helmsworth brothers in the role of beefcake.

Good if quirky film i enjoyed more than i should have, 7.5/10

Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned - 8.5/10. Boring title, long film, but very interesting visual effects and character relationships. It's a Korean drama/sci-fi/fantasy movie on Netflix about the relationship of a girl and a boy, the adventure of the boy and his two friends, and the despair of their parents. If you read the reviews or watch the trailers, you'd think this film sucks. The plot sounds stupid. Really though, don't read the reviews. The reviews gives too much info, ruining the magic. This film is pretty good at evoking feelings. It's not a tearjerker. If you've spent over an hour just trying to find something to watch (as I did), then just chose this one and prepare to be satisfied.

Nothing new about that marketing strategy. They have been doing it for 30+ years at least. Having scored free tickets to a movie people are more likely to have a positive review of the movie and tell others about it. Buzz has always been important to the entertainment industry, anything they can do to improve their buzz they are doing.

I've noticed that with Netflix programming. A lot of it has great production, but the writing is sooo bad.
