Krull 4/10 (for nostalgia, otherwise 3/10)
Its on Crackle right now so I thought I'd give it a watch after all of these years, just for fun.
I remember liking it as a boy, but I liked a lot of silly things back then. The people behind Krull obviously had a swords and sorcery version of Star Was in mind, right down to the casting of unknowns, but there's just too much incompetence present to make it work. Everything about the film, from the costumes to the sets to the effects, is extremely low rent and harkens from a pre-Star Wars era. They obviously saw a young Richard Chamberlain in the lead actor but he has none of the magic of the legend. Instead of allowing themselves to flow organically into the storyline of the film, as the young Star Wars actors did so well, everyone in Krull tries to make it their personal vehicle for stardom. The persistent overacting is cringeworthy, really.
Even the music by the usually great James Horner is overdone with the main title constantly repeating in different keys and orchestrations, even when it's not called for. He gats a pass - he must have been really young at the time.
The potential was there for so much more and that's why a lot of people probably have fonder memories of Krull than what I just described. Trust me: keep them memories.
