"Trainspotting"

Highly disturbing and at the same time funny movie about heroin addiction. (among other things)

My only additional comment: Ceiling-baby *(will make sense after you see it)

Avengers: End Game. 7/10. It was entertaining enough and about as well done as such a broad sweeping movie can be done. It had climatic value as the last of a series (for now). Plenty of inconsistencies, etc that kept it from being great.

From Dusk Till Dawn (1995) 5/10 108 minutes

Directed by Roberto Rodriguez, but this has Quentin Tarantino's fingerprints all over it. There are 3 Tarantino movies, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. The others are a heap of rubbish AFAIC. This belongs on that rubbish pile. I'm AOK with the nudity, the CGI are very impressive. The script and plot are too stupid for words.

Yeah, I never liked this flick. I guess I can get why people like it, but it just isn't my bag. Plus...I actually had no idea it was supposed to be a vampire movie when we first went to see it on opening day...I really don't recall it being advertised that way. Just, Tarantino involved in a flick with Harvey Kietel and George Clooney in some chill looking desert caper flick with this new super hot actress that no one ever heard of.

....it was super great, until super hot almost naked actress suddenly turned into an ugly vampire beast that would have to be killed....then it was just vampires everywhere.

......It wasn't until Rogriguez's soon-to-follow-remake of his own El Mariachi (for the US crowd) that I could feel vindicated after that first horrific time seeing the lovely Ms Hayek turn into a slimy gross beast

'Glass' - 7/10

With it being a M. Night Shyamalan movie, I knew it was going to have a lot of twists (and hopefully not suck at the end). I thought there would have been more action in it, but it was a slower paced chess-match type movie for most of the time. A LOT was packed into the end with some unexpected turns. Obviously if you liked the movies Unbreakable / Switch, you should like this one.

Avengers: Infinity War - 8/10. Better than I thought it would be. Good pacing and action with some nice humor thrown in. I haven't seen the Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Guardians 2, or new Spider-Man movies, but that's probably OK.

Went and saw Detective Pikachu this past week, and... it wasn't too bad. Of course, it's hard to hate on "Pikapool", but I will say that the trailers did show off a lot of good scenes from the movie. One thing that surprised me was the bit of swearing that the movie had. It wasn't much... a couple "hell" or "damn" remarks, but I'd expect none in a movie that they want parents to let their kids watch.

The Golden Child - 6.5/10

It's aged about as well as most disposable 80's movies have, but it's worth watching for a young Charlotte Lewis alone.

She is the definition of hotness in that movie.

john wick 3 - thought some of the kills were a little to over the top, but overall another amazingly choreographed action movie. 8.5/10 and would see again.

Chernobyl (HBO) -- 9/10

Ok so I've only watched the first two episodes (only ones so far) but dang, this is a finely crafted show. I'm not SUPER knowledgeable about the Chernobyl incident but I probably know more than the average bear. Good acting and the atmosphere is suspenseful and tense. I'm really looking forward to the next episode(s). I hope it's more than 10 episodes but I doubt it. Bah I just checked apparently it's a 5-part series. Nooooooooo! /vader

I watched the first 20 minutes of Chernobyl after GoT last weekend but my wife and I were pretty tired and it was slow, so we stopped. I'm going to go back to it for sure as I liked the atmosphere and stuff, although it definitely was a bit slow.

I was a bit annoyed that they were all speaking English though. I would have preferred Russian with subtitles, unless my geography and/or history is just completely wrong and there is a reason that it was overridden with English speaking people.

I don't know what it is, but I just cannot get into John Wick movies. I've seen all three in the theater, and I keep going back hoping to like them... or understand why other people like them, but I just can't. The thing is... it's not like I hate action-heavy movies, but there's just something about these that I can't get. Maybe it's just that the John Wick character is such a wet blanket that it's hard to have any sort of emotional attachment when the character himself shows little to no emotion. (It doesn't help that Keanu tends to use a very deadpan style.) A good example of how to do this properly was in the movie Dredd. Judge Dredd is also a very deadpan character, but the movie worked by including the "more human" Anderson. (Kind of an awkward way to describe her given they refer to her as a "mutant".)

As for the fights, there were a few good ones, but in some cases, they just felt overly drawn out and tedious. For example, the first fight, which we shall dub "Eat this.... you look like you need more fiber in your diet", was pretty good. On the other hand, the fight around the middle, which we shall dub "The two nutcrackers", was just sooo long and uneventful. It was pretty much just shooting in one direction, turning around and shooting in another direction, turns again and shoots.

Also, what was with the straight-up Looney Tunes action in this movie? The ninja guy was probably the most cartoony character in any of the movies, and since I'm about to talk about the end...

John's fall of the top of the building would've been so much better with Looney Tunes sound effects, because that's what it looked like.

That opening fight was the best close quarter fight scene since T 800 v T1000 in Terminator Two, the bathroom fight at the Air Force Base. Brilliant for this genre .
Sure, much of the action is over the top especially the gun work and as noted above, the last fall, but I think the reason for that, and for his reticence, is to establish "John Wick" as the toughest character in modern shoot-em-ups ( respects to Jason Bourne). He's meant to be our Robert Mitchum or Jack Palance.

And the gun work duet with Halle Barre. Nice touch.

Yeah I picked up on that right away, about the English speaking. But I think they did it because they were thinking about the audience. There's way, way more people that DON'T like subtitles than do. And in appealing to as much of people as they could (I think they're already working from behind as the source material/subject isn't exactly super popular), they decided to go with English speakers instead.

I'd prefer subtitles and Russian speakers myself but it's not too big a deal for me.

It just takes away from the authenticity of the show. All of the Spanish being spoken in Narcos is what makes that show so fucking great. It feels so damn authentic. Could you imagine if Pablo Escobar was speaking in English with an accent? It would have been so dumb.

That show Tyrant that was on FX had this same problem and it was just so stupid how they were speaking English in the middle of the middle east in terrorists cells with the fake ass accents. That show was canceled cause it was doing so bad and it feeling fake as hell probably had something to do with it.

You can go to far the other way too though. I hated having to read most of my way through Inglorious Bastards, which is a shame because it could have been a much better movie. My favorite method was The Hunt For Red October, where the Russians paused and switched to English early on in the movie. The audience knows what is going on, and no doubt appreciates the change.
