You can go to far the other way too though. I hated having to read most of my way through Inglorious Bastards, which is a shame because it could have been a much better movie. My favorite method was The Hunt For Red October, where the Russians paused and switched to English early on in the movie. The audience knows what is going on, and no doubt appreciates the change.
Yeah that's a good way of doing it. I don't remember that about Hunt for Red October but it's been quite a while since I've sat down and watched the whole thing.

It just takes away from the authenticity of the show. All of the Spanish being spoken in Narcos is what makes that show so fucking great. It feels so damn authentic. Could you imagine if Pablo Escobar was speaking in English with an accent? It would have been so dumb.

That show Tyrant that was on FX had this same problem and it was just so stupid how they were speaking English in the middle of the middle east in terrorists cells with the fake ass accents. That show was canceled cause it was doing so bad and it feeling fake as hell probably had something to do with it.

It is also worth noting that it is much easier for an actor to do a good performance in a language they are familiar with. To make the majority of the speech in Russian they would either need actors that speak Russian, which is limiting since and all of them already have a job working for the government, or train actors in Russian enough to make for a passing Russian, which would hurt the acting.

Santa Clarita Diet. Give it a 9.5/10

I'd never even heard of the series before it got cancelled and the internet went apeshit about it. Now I see why it had such a loyal and vocal following.

You know I think maybe the only reason they did it that way in the Hunt for Red October is because Connery was probably: "Fuck off I'm not going to try and speak some tart's language!" and stormed out of the production until they relented.

While I generally like the "proper" language being spoke in shows/movies, with Chernobyl, I can see it would have been hard to get that many Russian speaking actors (short of filming in Russia itself). It does detract from the overall feel of the show, but damn... if it's not an excellent show regardless. The atmosphere created is really amazing.

Oh man the third episode of Chernobyl was released last night, and dang, pretty tough... those poor frickin firefighters and plant workers. And those miners, lol, with the pork and beans flapping in the wind (hopefully not much of a spoiler). I hope every one of those guys, the firefighters, medics, miners, all of them, got Hero of the Soviet Union awards. They sure deserved it. Yeah big deal when they're getting cancer or dying early, you might say, but still, the mention and acknowledgement I think would be important.

Uh yeah, no. I think they were recently recognized, but of course the line for decades was that "it" never happened, and they never existed.

Creed II, 7/10

A classic Rocky/Stallone formula, fight your own demon, face your past, train harder kinda thing and it still work. At the end I kinda want Drago to win because of 1. settle the score between Rocky and Ivan 2. In the first match Drago KOed Creed in round one, it is hard to believe Creed improved enough to out last Drago at the end.

Last Breat - Netflix documentary - 2/10

Currently on Netflix as a documentary. Yes, it's a documentary technically. Here's the issue. I learned nothing. It's like a 2/10. They didn't discuss
how the diver actually survived that long without an oxygen supply or limited supply. Honestly, I thought the guy only got oxygen from his umbilical but he had tanks on his back? Maybe I missed the details because the documentary was so boring.

Not sure how this is 82% on rotten tomatoes. It's pretty boring. This could have been so much more interesting if they talked about the systems these divers work on and explain medically some things.

John Wick 3 - Parabellum 9/10

Rating is for a standard action movie.

JW1 is still probably my favorite, but they went all out for this one. Some very humorous kills, good fight choreography (IMHO), linear but interesting plot line, excellent CGI. I thought the scenes with the attack dogs were the most original and creative. The running dog joke wasn't bad either but I wouldn't have missed it.

I thought the ending was unexpected but I can see why they went that way to set up the sequel.

Definitely one of the most engaging action flicks I've seen in a while and that tends to be what I gravitate toward.

I don't know what it is, but I just cannot get into John Wick movies. I've seen all three in the theater, and I keep going back hoping to like them... or understand why other people like them, but I just can't. The thing is... it's not like I hate action-heavy movies, but there's just something about these that I can't get. Maybe it's just that the John Wick character is such a wet blanket that it's hard to have any sort of emotional attachment when the character himself shows little to no emotion. (It doesn't help that Keanu tends to use a very deadpan style.) A good example of how to do this properly was in the movie Dredd. Judge Dredd is also a very deadpan character, but the movie worked by including....

Although I disagree, I can understand this. If you are the type who needs spoon fed emotional direction, or comic relief to balance a deadpan style, these movies will not be for you. And I mean this without and disrespect or passive aggressiveness. I enjoy a good movie with little wiggle room as for emotional direction as well.

However, if you like over the top action, emotional freedom, and can relate to the undying force of blind determination compounded with a dash of the duality of man, you will enjoy a John Wick flick.

Well done, but I would not rate it that high. Maybe 7.5 of 10. Just too much nonstop, mind numbing violence. I mean I know that is what John Wick is about, and have nothing against it per se, but after a while, it just gets (at least to me) almost boring. I think I would have liked it better with a bit less frenetic pacing (a few breaks from nonstop killing), and maybe 20 minutes shorter run time. I mean, they certainly did not need any time to develop the plot.

Chernobyl (HBO) -- 9/10

Ok so I've only watched the first two episodes (only ones so far) but dang, this is a finely crafted show. I'm not SUPER knowledgeable about the Chernobyl incident but I probably know more than the average bear. Good acting and the atmosphere is suspenseful and tense. I'm really looking forward to the next episode(s). I hope it's more than 10 episodes but I doubt it. Bah I just checked apparently it's a 5-part series. Nooooooooo! /vader
I'm going (hopefully) to get a trial HBO subscription just to watch this.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) 6/10

Only at the end did I have an inkling that I'd seen it before. Honestly, I think it isn't that good. My thought at the beginning was to give it a short leash. If I didn't start liking it more in the next 15 minutes, hit eject. It got a little better and I decided to stick it out (2:11 or so). Eh, kind of goofy movie, had a germ of an idea and that appeared to be OK at the end. Had the thought that it was kind of a rebaked 2001, all in all, with the nostalgia for the TV series as it's heartbeat. I hope I never watch it again! Now, the Star Trek from 2009 was pretty dang good and I hope I do rewatch that one.

12 Strong HBO 7.8/10

Based on a true story of a US group of soldiers in Afganistan right after 9/11. A war story with a little different twist. Good cast, mostly believable.

I have gone through the Start Trek series a few times, still only watched #1 only once. At least they spent their ~10 minutes taking a camera around their little star ship pretty early in the movie, so the audience knows what they are in for. But yes, they could have scrapped that movie, started with Wrath of Khan, and no one would have missed it.

As I recall I really didn't like it much when I saw in in the theater back in the day (yep I'm old) but over the years it grew on me. If you get a chance watch TOS season 2, ep 3 "The Changeling" which its loosely based on.

Cold pursuit.

terrible.
lol, yeah I was kinda let down by this. The first trailer for it that I saw way back made it look like a Taken clone in the snowy mountains, which I would've actually been ok with. But meh, it definitely doesn't reach that level and there's a lot of lowish humor in it that was lacking from Taken. I thought it was ok but that was it.

im not sure what the movie was suppose to be. dark comedy, drama, action... and the scenes where there is a lonely road going into the Denver that looks like it was in Siberia but the scenes in the city look like Georgia in summer.... oh and the Liam Neeson, needs to stop playing the vengeful father out for revenge roles. that line has played out pal.

Keep in mind that "spoon-fed" most definitely has a negative connotation to it... unless you're debilitated or a baby.

The thing is... I've often disagreed with friends over whether a movie is good, and they're normally action-oriented movies. That might make you think that I don't like these sort of movies, but the movies that we'd often disagree over were things like the Resident Evil movies. I see these as movies that often offer very little outside of their action, and in a lot of cases, the action isn't very good anyway. I know a lot of people like the action in John Wick, but the third one was probably the worst for me in regard to its action set pieces.

I mentioned before that I thought the first fight was pretty good, and I think it works to understand what's wrong if you compare that fight to other fights in the movie. So, the first fight worked well because it actually had tension. I mean.. you were pretty sure John would win given that it was a fight to the death and 15 minutes would be a tad bit too short of a movie. In my mind, the worst fight in the movie was the Moroccan fight. My problem with it is that it's pretty much just ten minutes of shooting in random directions with absolutely no tension at all. The non-ninja portion of the last fight also had the exact same problem for me as it was just random, uninteresting action.

There were also just weird aspects to the story in the third one....
For example, John cuts his finger off to appease the Elder like they've been playing too much Assassin's Creed. First, you could be fairly certain that he was not going to kill Winston, so that part didn't work terribly well to begin with, and second, once it was pretty apparent that he wouldn't kill Winston, it just ruined the whole thing. We spent more time with John getting to the point where he could plead to be let back in than we did with John going to complete his assignment.

That plea scene would've worked better closer to the beginning, and we could've had John actually TRY or act like he was trying to kill Winston. Then, the exact same course could've played out where Winston turns John to his side. This isn't a huge change overall... just some minor shuffling of plot points, but it really helps add a bit of weight.

Overall, I guess I've never really understood why people seem to suggest to me that you can't have good action and a good story at the same time. I don't need an Oscar-worthy story, but just something that's at least a bit engaging. I mean... I like movies like Shoot 'Em Up, which wasn't exactly the most high-brow movie.

Well, for one thing, going to see a movie franchise that one doesn't like, in the theater, hoping to eventually like it, isn't a recipe for success.

I can get that John Wick is a different taste for some and while I don't generally like brainless movies, these are great brainless. They know what they are, they don't take themselves seriously, they are just fun.

I like them at home, though, where I can drink many beers and enjoy simple beer-fueled smiles.
