really worth watching?

I found it really slow and stopped when the 2 girls were gossiping about a man and woman having an affair while supposedly judging a competition.

meh?

If you didn't make it to the half way mark you missed out. It is...interesting.

The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018)

I read the Millennium trilogy, watched the American 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' movie, then this (which was written by a different author as the original author died some years ago).

I found it odd that the author decided to re-write Lisbeth's back story with regard to her father in such a way that completely conflicted with her roots from the trilogy without providing any explanation of why she is the woman she is today. I also found it odd that for the bare bones of this story (Lisbeth and her sister not getting along), the re-write wasn't necessary. Nor does this re-write improve anything, it seemed more like an excuse to crowbar a vac bed fetish into the proceedings. Maybe this was the film peoples' idea rather than the author's, no idea.

In the trilogy, technobabble was present yet thankfully pretty inconsequential. In this film however it's completely necessary for the story to work. Some dodgy cliches are used as well, like the villain dressing in a very comic-book fashion throughout the film and a finale on a cliff edge.

Also, Lisbeth is now skilled at combat and infiltration. No reason or basis as to why, she just is.

The words "fan fiction" spring to mind.

the author is dead at this point.

this is the 2nd trilogy written by someone else close to him and/or has the rights.
kinda like a reboot to the 2nd and 3rd book. (1st American movie is the 1st book of this new trilogy.)

I wrote my review about this movie a few pages back.

I didn't see this movie but the bolded immediately came to mind when I saw the previews for this ~last year. I'm like...uh so now this character is suddenly elite special forces science nerd hacker person? wtf? Do not want.

I didn't read the books or watch the American version(s?) of this story, but I saw the original Dutch trilogy with Noomi Rapace. Such a cool, sleek story, but this new movie looks absolutely nothing like the character.

Hotel Mumbai - 8/10

I don't know many details about the actual terror attacks but I thought the movie was a quite a good representation of the incidents. Dev Patel does a great job; I think he's quite a good actor. Definitely pretty graphic; people are just executed without any thought by the terrorists. I rented it on Amazon Prime Video.

I watched this last weekend. Holy shit was it good. I didn't know it was the Slum Dog Millionaire guy until my brother told me a day later. The movie is like non stop tension and the acting is phenomenal. The only bad thing was that Redbox only had it on DVD so I couldn't watch it on bluray.

Murder Mystery - 7/10 - it was just a fun silly movie. I wish it didn't have any of the "serious" stuff that EVERY FUCKING comedy has to have now a days, but if it didn't have any of that I probably would have given it a 8/10. It's worth a watch and was better than I expected it to be.

Yea, I agree. Very good movie, and Patel is great. He also is a regular on New Amsterdam.

Hidden Figures (2016) 7/10

I lived those years and I was a physics major who eventually graduated with a math degree. Well, it's very Hollywood (not good). They go for all the let's try every trick in the book to get you engaged emotionally with the characters. Mostly in tandem with glossing over or ignoring or transforming egregiously the reality of what they were portraying. IOW, they glamorized or sweetened or served up a cliche instead of the real deal. It was through the lens of pop culture, not what I'd call reality. IMO they played to popular conceptions of technology, politics and culture. My impression after the trailing credits was that the people they portrayed were more interesting than the characters they served forth in the movie (they had stills of the historical figures during those credits). Even so, I didn't rebel against it, didn't think I should eject it, I stuck with it, picked up on what it was, where it was going, where it went. As a progressive liberal activist person, I can endorse the drift of it. But it's one of those historical movies (i.e. movies that are based on real events) that you have to read between the lines. My favorite character was Kevin Costner as the boss of the project to get a man into orbit and him returning to earth alive.

Genius of the Ancient World - Netflix 8/10

There are three episodes, Buddha, Socrates and Confucius. Very interesting with Bettany Hughes. I've watched her before on ancient Greece and she really has a passion for the ancient world.

So, I picked up Batman Returns on UHD the other day as I was always a bit more fond of it than the original... and we won't even talk about the Schumacher Batman movies. However, something stood out to me as a bit interesting while watching it. So, Halle Berry's Catwoman gets lambasted for being downright awful, but Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman was probably just as corny as Hale Berry. I mean... Pfeiffer literally starts preening herself at one point. So, why is one liked and the other derided?

I think it sort of relates to the same problem that the Schumacher Batman movies had. WIth Burton, he created somewhat over-the-top variants of characters that lived in a ridiculous world. It quite literally stood out to me when Penguin went to the Hall of Records, which was hard to miss, because of the huge letters on the building that said "HALL OF RECORDS". ...and then you have this following scene, which shows the ridiculous/corny nature of this universe and its characaters:

On the other hand, Schumacher and Hale Berry's Catwoman both had incredibly over-the-top characters that existed in what felt like a far more normal world. There may have been awkward set pieces, but those were often just events influenced by the characters (typically the villains). Tim Burton's nature to make really awkward worlds just fits when you're trying to take an over-the-top approach to comic book characters. Essentially, it feels a bit more like fantasy. If we go forward a bit, Nolan's take is far more grounded, which functions fine in its far more normal world.

Oh, and amusingly enough... the rating card at the beginning of Batman Returns rated it PG-13 for violence and... brooding. That sounds like a joke, but that's what it said!

Us - 7/10 - I really liked the vibe this movie had, but the explanation for everything at the end had me going "Really? That's it?"

And the "twist" I kinda saw before it happened after piecing together stuff.

Not as good as Get Out but a solid movie. It was better than I expected after hearing what everyone said about it.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, 8/10

Mysterio is damn near perfect. The clever use of minor characters you thought were there just to fill up space or help further the plot in past Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies helps further link Spider-Man to past MCU movies. The return of an actor from past Spider-Man movies, Alex Jones style (that should be enough of a hint to let you know who this is).

There's two post movie scenes, one after the main movei, but before the credits roll, as well as a post credit scene. Both have huge implications for the MCU.

Deadwood - The Movie, 4 / 10

I waited so long for this movie to wrap up the series, and it was just so underwhelming on so many levels.

I bought it for $2.99 on Amazon Prime Video, and that's honestly all it was worth. It was good seeing almost all the original characters back, but the writing was not very good, the situations were all pretty much predictable, and the classic Al Swearengen we all loved to hate was not to be found.

Pet Sematary (remake) - 5/10, maybe a bit lower. The acting sucked, the story felt rushed, and the CGI during the truck crash was terrible. The original was so much better.

I found it only made me miss the characters more than it gave me any sense of closure. It felt to me like the moment we were finally getting somewhere, it just stopped. I guess that's better than nothing, but it was a bit disappointing.

Season 1 of Stranger Things was alright, but HUGELY overrated and overhyped. It completely feeds off of nostalgia and without that I don't think it would have gotten nearly the praise. But it did have it and it worked for it.

Season 2 was a big fat "meh"-burger. It was basically "lets get lisp boy on screen for as long as we can" and was just full of stupid stuff happening.

I have hears S3 is the best of all of them thus far so I don't really know what to expect. I plan on starting S3 tonight and watching 2-4 episodes.

Well since we are talking stranger things....

Season 1 was a solid 9/10 for me. I love me some 80's nostalgia and the storyline progressed nicely, never venturing off too far. It had a nice blend of sci fi and reality, making it easy to enjoy.

Season 2 was a 7/10 for me. It was all together more of the same but seemed a bit reaching at times and somewhat thrown together at others.

Season 3, episode 1 down and so far it also feels like "stranger things". Even perhaps trying to up the ante on the nostalgia. I will reserve judgement on a score till I see the whole season but so far episode 1 is a 7/10.

Least we not forget 4k/hdr goodness.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (David Fincher, Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett - 2008) 8.7/10

Has to be seen to have any understanding of the quality and impact. Longish, but hey, a long life is long, so in that respect it deserves it. I felt a timelessness I like when I watch a movie.

Love and Death. It's the title to a Woody Allen movie, but that didn't move me the one time I saw it some years ago. This movie is all about love and death and in spades. Other movies, people die, it can mean nothing at all, it can be a wrenching moment, in this movie death has other dimensions. It's a basic subtext really throughout. Steve Jobs said "death is very likely the single best invention of life." That's an unusual perspective, but more genuine than the fear of death that's so common.

This movie was extremely carefully and well made. It's 165 minutes long!

I made mention at a family gathering to one person a few years ago, Mark Twain's quip that life is all wrong, a person should start off old and get younger. I was told about this movie and finally got around to seeing it. The movie's fundamental idea is based on a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but I have to wonder if F. Scott didn't get the idea from Mark Twain.

Nominated for 13 Oscars, including major ones. It won 3 "minor" ones.

Just watched 3/1 so far it was ehh 6/10. Tell me it gets better.

The first couple of episodes really don't do too much outside focusing on the characters, but it does get better. It was a little too slow for my liking at first, but they are really focusing on teenagers with crazy hormones / feelings.

We just finished watching episode 6, so we have two more to go. It begins to really pick up beginning with episode 4.

Just watched a few hours ago 1974 film "Earthquake" with Charlton Heston. Give it a 7/10. Not kidding when i started feeling my house rock to the 7.1 earthquake that just hit out here this evening during the movie. Can't make this up.

Movie wise, its a better disaster film then films like twister, sharknado and your other various lower budget films. Practical effects over cgi and sometimes you can tell something was fake but for 1974 what the heck do you want. The movie had plenty of destruction.
