The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (David Fincher, Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett - 2008) 8.7/10
Has to be seen to have any understanding of the quality and impact. Longish, but hey, a long life is long, so in that respect it deserves it. I felt a timelessness I like when I watch a movie.
Love and Death. It's the title to a Woody Allen movie, but that didn't move me the one time I saw it some years ago. This movie is all about love and death and in spades. Other movies, people die, it can mean nothing at all, it can be a wrenching moment, in this movie death has other dimensions. It's a basic subtext really throughout. Steve Jobs said "death is very likely the single best invention of life." That's an unusual perspective, but more genuine than the fear of death that's so common.
This movie was extremely carefully and well made. It's 165 minutes long!
I made mention at a family gathering to one person a few years ago, Mark Twain's quip that life is all wrong, a person should start off old and get younger. I was told about this movie and finally got around to seeing it. The movie's fundamental idea is based on a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but I have to wonder if F. Scott didn't get the idea from Mark Twain.
Nominated for 13 Oscars, including major ones. It won 3 "minor" ones.
