Pulling John 7/10
Sadly it isn't a porno, just a documentary on arm wresting. Doesn't seem like it would be all that interesting but I enjoyed it. It follows three people John Brzenk the King of Arm Wresting for the last 25 years and two up and comers one from Wv and one from the Ukraine. Arm wrestling is apparently big shit in a lot of other countries. If you are bored and have an hour to kill give it a try. Netflix streaming.

But I couldn't even get through Ichi the Killer

Ichi the Killer is far out in left field. It's actually my second favorite of his films after 13 Assassins, but it's not representative of his entire body of work.

I couldn't get through Sukiyaki Western Django for the longest time. I started it and watched the first 15 mins or so with Quentin Tarantino talking with a fake Japanese accent several times and finally after 3 or 4 failed attempts I finally made it through. And it was awesome.

Also, Audition is boring as hell IMO, but it's also fvcking awesome....

haha, not sure I could get through Django either now but you have me intrigued. Ichi and Assassins are the only Miike I've seen, and Assassins has earned him at least a few more tries. Does he have any other "serious"(straight might be a better word) films?

Frequency - 8/10: Dennis Quaid: Firefighter and Baseball enthusiast with an awkward New York accent in 1969. Jim Caviezel: A youngish, troubled, brooding former Baseball enthusiast, cop with an acceptable New York accent in 1999. Ham radios collide and they end being able to speak with each other, even though Quaid died 30 years prior...dun dun dun! It sound like a bit of a silly premise, and it kind of is, but I ended up really getting sucked in here and liking the movie. The Father-Son relationship was nice (stirred up some feelings in me, which is weird because I am generally devoid of emotion) and how it turns into kind of a whodunit procedural was pretty fun. It hits some sappy, silly notes, but in total it really worked for me.

The Lorax - 5.5/10: We decided to go see this because it looked kind of Eastery (and because it happened to be the only thing playing at a point where we were free). The first half of the film was relatively fun with a nice world set-up and a couple of fun characters smattered throughout, but about half-way through the movie it hit some quicksand, slowed down to a crawl, and essentially just became a preachy slog (trees are good mmmkay?). I did enjoy the forest creatures, particularly the fat bear, and The Lorax had a couple of good parts, but so many of the surrounding characters were flat, boring, or trying too hard. The film really needed to do more with its villain, though maybe they would argue the villain is all of humanity (ugh), but just making a guy short and giving him a bad haircut, does not a compelling villain make! I'd much rather re-watch Despicable Me.

Frequency brings back some good memories... yep if you like baseball, you'll probably like it.

Hmm, from what I've seen, he doesn't really have too much "serious" content otherwise. Generally, his films are essentially overflowing with ultraviolence and bizarreness. That said, I've only seen about 10 or so of his works.

Crows Zero could be perhaps a little more on the "Vanilla" side. Sorta in some ways similar to Battle Royale.

Otherwise, The Great Yokai War is essentially a family/kids adventure movie, doesn't have the dirty/perverseness of most of his other works. I found it much lighter and more watchable vs his other stuff.

Maybe "One Missed Call" is worth trying. It wasn't one of his stronger films, but it was a lot closer to being "generic" vs his other works ...

Blow Out - 8/10: Brian De Palma's classic take on Antonioni's Blow-up with John Travolta as a movie sound guy who is the earwitness to a car crash of a famous politician and becomes embroiled in all kinds of nasty stuff as a result. I liked this quite a bit, particularly the first half to two-thirds where the mystery is building and we are spending a lot of time with Travolta piecing the mystery together slowly and meticulously by using the various sound and film equipment around him (freaking loved that stuff). It was also cool to see a youngish John Lithgow and a skinnyish Dennis Franz in significant parts. It gets a bit too silly near the very end; I mean I really did not need a slow-motion Travolta climbing a staircase with a terrified look on his face (I guess he always kind of looks like that) and the very end was laughable, but the other 90% is a great, solid, action thriller and has easily jumped into my top four De Palma films. Beautiful Criterion blu-ray by the way if you get a chance to watch it that way.

Yeah, not sure what this was based on but the screenwriter, the director, or someone, sure loved Baseball!

Have you seen The Happiness of the Katakuris? I really want to see that one and I've heard good things. I love Audition, but some of his other stuff is hit or miss for me. I will keep trying though!

I have not seen it. But I would like to.
Also haven't seen the bird people in China, which I would like to see quite a bit.

9/10

I delayed watching this for a year or so because the description on Netflix was "meh." But, last night I put it on as I was eating my dinner. WOW, it surprised me. This film was a delight. The only other movie I can think of that sort of feels like this one is Amelie. This was MUCH better than I had expected it to be. It was overall a very very good film. I am undecided if this film is a "perfect" film or if it's just a "damn good" film.

Elevate - basketball doc on Netflix, about players from Africa who try to get scholarships in United State's prep schools, and hopefully college scholarships and maybe the NBA.

Seen alot of good basketball docs, but this one is even better, showing basketball as a world sport. The ONLY doc about basketball where you will see the players (African) not acting like they are 'the shit', but polite, hard workers, and definately a breath of fresh air. 8/10

Lorenzo's Oil - true story about parents with a terminal child that literally are responsible for saving thousands of children across the world.

This one is old; Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon, and Nick gets a ton of hate because of his accent, but it is one of the best medical dramas I've ever seen, and it's real to boot. 9/10

Seriously old, saw that in school some 10-15 years ago. Good movie though.

The Three Stooges 4/10 -- Maybe bump it to 5.5/10 if you're a die hard Stooges fan, but . . . this movie was flat.

Honestly, the Stooges are the Stooges. They're from a different time and place, and it would have been a miracle if this movie had turned out well. I watched them on the tube when I was a kid, and they were a phenomenon, but even then I considered WC Fields and the Marx Brothers vastly superior.

That said, the guy who played Curly really had all his physical mannerisms down.

It's just the 15 minute, black and white, two reeler slapstick shtick from the 1930's that was the Stooges wheelhouse was never going to translate well into a feature length movie today.

But I have a buddy who's still mad into them, and he dragged me to the premier. Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck!

Almost forgot, just near the end, what comes on but Bob Dylan singing Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, which just might be my most favorite song ever, if there is such a thing. Huge, off the wall bonus points for THAT!

A kinda true story... The one who should have caught flack for her accent was SS. It was quite engaging however.

I've always meant to watch this one. Thanks for the reminder.

I've actually heard very positive things about this movie so far, which is surprising. I expected it to be a disaster, but apparently it is quite funny and the performances of the stooges themselves are impressive. I've never really watched any old stooges stuff, but I'll have to check this out at some point.

I'm shocked at the reviews The Cabin in the Woods has been getting. The trailers don't make it look very appealing at all. Maybe I'll try to go tomorrow

The Cabin in the Woods 6.5/10 - Just got back. The movie doesn't really get good until the last 30 minutes, then all hell breaks loose. It has some comedy mixed in with the mayhem. Good date flick.

Lockout - 3/10

Movie was horribad. I didn't expect much from the previews but, it was like watching one of those shitty, B movie Syfy flicks. The story, writing, directing all pretty much sucked. Worst action/CGI I can remember in recent history. Every other time they open their mouths was a one-liner.

I just want to kick the directors in the nutz.

Previews said it was "ridiculously entertaining." I am disappoint.
