The Rite (2011)

I'm almost certain that the trailer was sufficiently intriguing to get me to watch it (e.g. Anthony Hopkins), though I can't remember the circumstances of my first watching it, even less why I bought it on DVD.

The build-up that gets the protagonist to Rome to train as an exorcist was good. The protagonist's motivations and what is driving them through the plot is good. His scepticism should have found a better basis in fact and an openness to inquiry (rather than scepticism despite what he's seeing). The final act and the conclusion however is what lets this film down in a big way.

The whole 'naming a demon gives you power over them' thing I've heard before, but it would have strengthened the conclusion of this film if they had fleshed that aspect out properly, rather than ending like "you figured it out, yay! end movie".

'The Exorcist' has covered this ground a lot better, and I can't think of anything sufficiently remarkable and unique about this film to make it stand out in the genre. This film is just disappointing.

I SUMMON THEE, @zinfamous

Rogue - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11576124/

ugh - that 3.8/10 on IMDb can't be good.

Scene-by-scene;
1. introduction; africa - we are made aware of various smuggling operation, such as .. a lion farm (?).
Seal Team Punani - a group of ruff'n'gruff mercenaries, captained by Megan Fox, is observing one such smuggler's camps; after a careful approach, they blow up a building with explosives to cause a distraction, so they can infiltrate the camp. The target is located - the smugglers are trafficking women.
The smugglers catch them in the act. A chase ensues as they escape with the prisoners. Big firefight, some good guys are killed, eventually they jump off a cliff - end scene.

ok so; lots of strong colour - i like this. Some inappropriate CGI with the lions, it could be omitted entirely without problem.
Megan Fox voice sounds think and squeeky; everyone else's sounds like they could actually be mercenaries.
There's multiple, really brief, super inappropriate attempts at comedy where characters have not yet been established, AND in an otherwise serious scene.
The extras all do a good job. It's obvious that they have the "serious" side of the film.
Fox vaguely tries to impose herself - there are too many hostages in the camp, only one is what they came for, they should leave the others - but immediately gives in to her colleagues.
Not a terrible scene, but not great either. 20 minutes, and i don't know if i'm watching Sicario, or if it's a romcom.
poor direction and camerawork. Good photography.

2. interior, night - abandoned farm. Seal Team Punani is hiking back with two hostages. They have sustained casualties, the mood is low. They come upon an abandoned farm where they recuperate. Through exposition we learn that Fox is good at her job.
We find that the equipment is damaged. How will they get off this farm?
After a few minutes getting acquainted with the characters, we find that the farm is a lion farm from the introduction.
One of the side characters is eliminated and we come upon the antagonist (?) of the film - escaped CGI lions.
Sorry, i meant to say, "escaped bulletproof CGI lions". Looks like we are going down the route of the horror film.
Lighting

3. interior, night - abandoned farm.
STP are discussing what to do; one of the side characters spouts the film title: "some lions go ROGUE(r), they like to kill".
The heroes are out of ammo, and they need to Get The Generator Started. To do this they need to move silently in dangerous lion territory. Am i watching .. a ZOMBIE MOVIE?!?!
Yup. I totally am. There is a 100% zombie movie jumpscare too.
Not terrible, mind you, just, very obvious. Also, you can't have this kind of film without sacrificing a character for every scene.
The generator is now running. They radio home but that's a negative on extraction, "we're not gonna make the night".

(the hostages .. have some very inappropriate dialogue throughout, but, they could have made a more convincing lead than Fox; she even has a truly embarrassing "you know i am a captain bruh" line of dialogue that wins worst delivery of 2020.)

4. interior night, abandoned farm.
More ..... i know i've *just* used the word "embarrassing" but .... embarrassing CGI jumpscares.
Something explodes. The smugglers are back, and this scares the CGI lion away.
The heroes take some guns from the smugglers, and there is an extended firefight scene. The farm is burning.
Why are these smugglers kitted out to look like arab insurgents?
Now that Megan Fox is doing more of the shooting and less of the talking, the film has improved.
One of the hostages gets blood on her hands. Two of the mercs have a knife fight (idk why).

5. exterior night, abandoned farm.
The showdown with the bad guy head smuggler. He is Bri'ish. He is eaten by the lion, obviously. Good screaming tho.

6. exterior day, abandoned farm.
Conclusion. Everyone is wounded but happy, and a helicopter arrives. There is even a title card that says some stuff about lion farms, like the film we just watched has a pretense of being a serious, involved film about lion farming. sad lols.

i'm already getting an idea that with a believable lead and a decent director, this film could have been substantially better. The casting , Fox aside, is pretty good - these guys look ugly and mean. And, if you gon' have a military movie, maybe hire a consultant, because some of the tactics are horrible.
But, as we said, it's closer to a zombie film that to a military action film, and, you know, it's not horrible, the only real problem is that it wants to be better than it is, because if this film was more self-aware, it could have been even a 6/10 - just stick to ONE script, not two, and don't try to be too serious, when you got scenes like a character yelling "we are saved" and then getting jumpscare-killed by f* CGI lions.

But, because in the end, it's a pretentious piece of shlock, my final vote is 5/10

masochist.

after watching Rogue, i decided i had earned some me time and i watched a film from 1988 which i loved at the time, but i have yet to find anyone else who has seen it:

Moon Over Parador - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095654/

Starring Richard Dreyfuss, co-starring Raul Julia, who at the time was getting a lot of praise as a committed actor for Kiss Of The Spider Woman (which certainly is a good film, but why would you subject yourself to something that's meant to make you miserable).

These summer comedies were super-popular in this period of time, and were not meant to be serious films, but rather on-the-cheap, single-talent based with an easy script and competent if not extravagant direction - in other words, well made films.

Dreyfuss is Jack Noah, a minor yet decently successful actor, shooting a film in the southern country of Parador. As the film wraps, he is introduced to the local strongman, president Alphonse, who asks him to perform an impersonation, to which Noah (Dreyfuss) obliges.

At the 15 minute mark, there has not yet been a single thing about this film which is *wrong*. No out of character delivery, no language inappropriate for the character or setting, no badly framed shots. Is it so hard to, like, not fuck up ?

Anyway, Noah decided to take a short holiday before heading back to the ol' hussle'n'bussle in neurotic US of A. The local carnival provides some entertainment; at the same carnival, we see Presidente Alphonse (played by Dreyfuss' brother) leaving together with his second in command, Strausmann (Julia). In a brief exchange in the presidential car, it becomes apparent that Strausmann is the real head honcho, while Alphonse is a puppet. Unfortunately for Starusmann, el presidente has a heart attack not too long afterwards, and dies.

We cut to Noah, headed home after a long night at the carnival. He's just about stumbling to his hotel, when he is abducted by government agents, and taken to Strausmann.

Strausmann lays it down for Noah - he is to play the part of Presidente Alphonse. There is a confrontation between the two, as Noah is obviously alerted by Strausmann's shady character, but eventually Strausmann strongarms him, and here Dreyfuss transforms into the dictator, which is worth the $7 ticket price in 1988.

I won't spoil the rest of the film - but it's worth watching. It doesn't translate well to the small screen, but it's still entertaining. Noah gets more involved with the role, and decides to move Parador is a new direction.
Strausmann is great as he's not a clear-cut villain, and often can be seen as a character whose interest run parallel to Noah's.
There is a rather lukewarm love interest in the person of Sonia Braga (no nudity, this is a 1980s PG13 film bruh).
The film progresses fairly briskly to a suspenseful conclusion, and even though it has some .. uh .. not "dark", but "important" moments, it manages to keep an appropriate tone, comedic without falling into farce.

The "Punas" drink recipe from the film:
INGREDIENTS
  1. 1⁄2 ounce light rum.
  2. 1⁄2 ounce dark rum.
  3. 1⁄2 ounce spiced rum, to taste.
  4. ounce banana liqueur.
  5. ounces pineapple-orange-banana juice.
  6. ounces mango juice.
  7. tablespoons pineapple chunks.

A film i remember fondly: 7/10

Chef's Table BBQ just dropped on Netflix. The cinematography is as awesome as you would expect it to be. If you were looking for something to show off your new 4K HDR TV, watch it! If you like BBQ, watch it!

currently trying to watch Rambo: Last Blood extended edition free on Amazon, but I don't know if I can finish it.

Among a litany of complaints so far, one is that watching Stallone try to Rambo right now is almost as bad as trying to watch 75 year-old DeNiro try to play a 30 year-old gangster curb-stomping people in The Irishman last year....close. But at least that was a GREAT movie and worth it.

This....ffs.

Godfather Part III is getting the Lucas treatment.
Paramount is releasing a new version with altered scenes.

I imagine it would be kind of tricky to replace Sofia Coppola with a woman who can act.

I don't actually have much of a problem with GF3, its main problem is that it can't hold a candle to the first two. It's a bit of an Alien3 in my book: mediocrity looks a whole lot worse when there are obvious examples of that kind of plot done properly.

Tenet - 1.5 stars out of 10

After seeing the Trailer about a dozen times when we went to see various movies over the past month or two, I rather wanted to see this one. When my wife asked if I'd like to go see it with our two older teens tonight, I jumped at it. I've read dozens of time travel books, and enjoyed many time travel shows + movies. I'm typically a sucker for anything dealing with time travel.

Unfortunately, we all found it so boring after about an hour that my wife and kids wanted to leave. I don't know if it was the pacing, the long discussions, or what, but my wife gave it a 2 out of 10, which I think was generous. By the end of the movie, I really didn't care about what happened to any of the characters. I felt less like I had been entertained, and more like I had sat through a long lecture in college by a professor who had trouble conveying his ideas to the class.

It's pretty sad, because I really enjoyed Nolan's Batman movies. If my only experience was this movie, I would have blacklisted him, and made a point of never watching any of his others.

What did you think of it? We were the only family at the 7pm showing on a Friday. Lately, there have been at most 2 or 3 other couples in the entire theater when we've gone.

I tried watching "Away" on Netflix. It's pretty bad. It's got all the typical problems that you'll see with bad low budget Sci-Fi dramas: There is sound in outer space, the astronauts can talk to their friends and relatives from millions of miles away in real time, and everyone is talking on a 2019-era iPhone. That's kind of odd, considering that this is supposed to be happening at some point in the future when NASA has the availability to send people to Mars. The astronauts also seem to hate each other, causing a bunch of unnecessary drama.

I'm going for a 5/10 for this one.

I finally watched Bullitt. Thats another one I said I'd do almost 30 years ago. Never got around to it.
Surprisingly boring. Theres a handful of good scenes surrounded by several boring ones. But I guess in 1968 it was easier to impress people.

Yeah, older movies move slowly, building the story but this is tough to sit through nowadays. If you like Steve McQueen, The Getaway is pretty good. The guy from the Godfather who played Sollozzo is in it, as well as Sally Struthers. There was a remake with Alec Baldwin and his ex, can't remember her name ATM.

If you want some nostalgia:

The list probably wont mean much to a lot of you, but for those of us who grew up with the show its kind of special. The series actually meant something to television and to America during its early seasons.

Along those lines:

A good analysis of what went right and what eventually went wrong.

Movies I have watched since the pandemic started.

Stalag 17 - it had been a good number of years. A true classic, 10/10.

Cyrano De Bergerac 1950 version. Brilliant. I have seen this one several times over the decades. 10/10

Sgt. York - Humor, action, drama, and based on actual person. 10/10

Inception - I had never seen it. Hugely disappointed. I suppose it was inevitable given the years of positive internet feedback about it. The movie struck me as Dreamscape meets the Matrix. 6/10

Bumblebee - Wife picked it, she liked it. My opinion is that it was a reboot of Herbie the Love Bug. 5/10

Watched some James Caan movies. From a very politically incorrect time.

Rollerball - Moonpie! 7/10

Killer Elite - classic action flick. 7/10

Freebie and the Bean - Even the title would trigger PC principle. One of the first buddy cop movies I am aware of. If you have never seen this one, it is damned funny, and has a classic car chase scene, like so many movies had back then. 8/10

Charlie Heston movies-

Omega Man - Nostalgia is great, but it did not age as well as I hoped it would. I feel like it is 6/10 but because of when it was made- 8/10

Soylent Green - is people. Key themes were, overpopulation, acidification of the oceans, and global warming. Unheeded cautionary tale. 10/10

I finally got around to it in 2015. The car chase scenes aren't my cup of tea. The plot had me confused, some.

I did put this in my private notes about it:

Has some unique stuff, especially the hospital scenes, in particular the operating room stuff, which was pretty realistic, infinitely moreso than you would see in almost every other fiction movie.

Keep in mind that some older movies had a different audience reaction because they watched the movie during its release and with that their entire movie-watching history framed how they might, or might not, enjoy the movie. I tell myself this every time I am about to watch an older movie, say +40 years old, and I am only mid-50's in age. But I just rewatched All The President's Men, Three Days of the Condor and some others and in-perspective of the times they were released and what it was like to be an adult moviegoer during those times those movies were really enjoyable. I'm now going through more of them on TCM (via HBO Max streaming) and on Amazon Prime. I've seen these 1960's-1970's movies more than once--actually own a lot of them on Blu-ray, and really get off on seeing what it was like outside during those times. The streets and cars, the weather, the advertising, the clothing, etc. was all entertaining.

Jez, you wanna know how many times The World Trade Center is shown in 3DotC? A lot! And dig the purple lobby carpeting, too.
