This movie shifted focus several times, reminded me of World War Z, which kind of turned into like 3 different movies. More than that, was a lack of a good solid villain who got what was coming to him. This movie would have been twice as good if they had had the God of Deception in it, where he was duping the Mandalorian guy, and then Diana saved him and he got to be with his son at the end, which gives us a happy ending PLUS stuck it to the bad guy. Like the show was going really well up until they switched out the magic crystal & read the Language of the Gods on it, because it was starting to be really cool and then kind of switched gears. Plus Diana didn't really get a happy ending, and watching a foil helium balloon float away reminded me more of how that's bad for the environment than her letting her heart go of Chris Pine.
A lot of stuff happened too fast & got glossed over. Like neither one of them cared that they took over some dude's body & whole life. Not even like a mention of "dang, this really isn't right taking over this guy's life". The shy girl also switched things up a bit too fast & went kind of full-on evil in a tropey kind of way. Plus when she beat up the drunk guy & the homeless dude was like what are you doing?? And she was like mind your business! I mean the dude tried to rape her. All she had to say was "he tried to rape me, so I fought back & defended myself". Her initial shy character was very tropey & felt like very Aldrich Killian from Ironman 3 when he was a nerd in the beginning.
I had a hard time with the flying part. I understood what they were trying to do but it kind of threw me out of the movie tbh. Unpopular opinion, I actually thought that swinging on the lightning bolts was a pretty cool idea, I haven't seen that before. But they could have done the flying like Thor where he spins his hammer, maybe turn her lasso into a helicopter lol, but I understand why she didn't do that - Thor had already done it & it probably would have looked kind of silly. Speaking of silly, I'm always impressed when they can make a superhero suit look good on a human being, as that can be really hard, and I thought the golden armor looked pretty cool. I remember when they interviewed the staff on the first X-men movie about why they didn't go with the classic costumes & they said Hugh Jackman in bright yellow spandex just didn't work on-screen lol. Although now we have really good CGI for stuff like Dr. Strange's cloak (I'M WAITING ON YOU, SPAWN REMAKE!!!), the new Spiderman's suit & face mask, etc.
A lot of the graphics were really amazing. The fireworks scene in the invisible jet was really cool, plus the clouds. I felt like a lot of stuff was kind of thrown in, like it wasn't super-clear about if he got sick using his powers, but he was also always asking for his vitamins, so maybe he had some underlying health issues that got exacerbated when he used his powers? A lot of things in the movie were just kind of vague like that & glossed over. Like he got a wish when someone else got their wish, but he could only take something they had to give? It took me a lil' bit to figure that one out lol. I think some things just got touched on too fast, like the old man wishing for a farm & getting cows, it was supposed to be like the whole "you get a wish from a genie but in a slightly twisted way that isn't exactly what you really wanted" trope.
So I think if they had added a head-honco bad guy & it turned out he was running the show & trying to smash civilization (again) & Diana had to stop him, that would have made more sense. Like some of the early scenes & foreshadowing didn't really play out, like were the jewelry heist guys hired by Mr. Oil? The chance for Diana to prove her mettle in the future as a kid didn't quite come back in either, like maybe a flashback of doing some of the flip moves or arrows or something to tie it in & then a quick flashback of "no cheating" before renouncing her wish would have felt more appropriate. Also why did everyone in the 80's have HUGE apartments and huge office spaces lol. I also wish there was some backstory on Mr. Oil's mom to make us care more about his son, like did she see that he was a con artist & leave him and he wanted to prove himself & not lose his son's respect in the process? Which is why I think they needed the Deception guy to be the big boss, because then they'd have someone to fight & could use his love for his son to stop civilization from crumbling.
I think because of all this, it felt a little long. I've seen really long movies where I'm riveted the whole time, and I think this movie got kind of diffused along the way.
