The Upshaws 6/10
Just a standard sitcom that would be at home on network Tv other than some occasional raunchy language created by and co-staring Wanda Sykes. It isn't anything special but it is a good time killer to watch while at work and/or surfing the net. Does have a laugh track which I know bothers some people but works for me in this style of sitcom. Neflix

I've been watching The Looming Tower on Hulu. It's a drama about the CIA and FBI chasing Al Qaeda in the 90's. It's pretty good, I'd give it a 7.5/10.

The only part I have trouble believing is that the FBI can't defeat Al Qaeda in the 90's, even though they have an FBI agent played by Jeff Daniels on their side. I mean, come on... if they had the real Jeff Daniels on their team back then, he could probably could have personally converted Osama from a radical Islamic terrorist to a peaceful Christian man with his charm alone

The Tomorrow War on Prime - 2/10. Action Hero fantasy flick (pretending to be SciFi, as usual).
Probably great for teenage kids who aren't geeks. I probably would have enjoyed it more after I killed enough brain cells with a few Bacardi 151 rum and Cokes.

I saw the trailer for that last night. It looked so bad I couldn't bring myself to press the play button.

The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11

A TV series based on Lawrence Wright's excellent account of the lead up to 9/11.

The publisher's subtext is that the rivalry between the CIA and FBI inadvertently set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan.

The series is uber interesting even if you know most of the story, to see the simultaneous acts of the many players including the abomination known as OBL , his retarded cohorts and the political environment between the intelligence agencies leading up to the attack. Well produced and presented .

I assume the book itself is even better.

The account takes me back to those bad old days of Arab fanaticism, Al Queda, then ISIS, etc, and a well felt appreciation for how far the US has taken us in the war to destroy all those assholes. Me Luv You Long Time.
Well done on all fronts, political, literary and on film.

i just watched it .

I was not aware that Chris Pratt was in the lead or i would have not watched it. I really really really do not like Chris Pratt. The worst Chris Pratt is Serious Chris Pratt and guess what, this film has Serious Chris Pratt in it.

Anyway, JK Simmons was good as always.

There is a bad time travel plot that sees earth from 2050 call for help people in 2020. Obviously for plot reasons the military, all 27 million worldwide, die, and they start conscripting civilians. Essentially the film is based around the fantasy of non-military in a military role.
They jump to 2050 and start killing aliens.
Throughout, the film is VERY loud. It tries as hard as it can to make a ton of noise and sensationalize everything which winds up being a lot of white noise. The hero is constantly barely surviving in incredible odds.
They don't do terribly well killing aliens, and they go back to 2030. For some reason they can only stay in the future for 7 days.
So they go back, and Serious Chris Pratt thinks hey, i have no evidence to support this but i think the aliens are already here on earth and i will pinpoint a location in russia, where a spaceship is buried. And they kill the spaceship and win.

It's not terrible, but it's one of those so utterly mediocre films that it's even boring to explain why it's mediocre. It's just noise, noise and overused tropes, nothing's interesting, everything's been done before, bah.

Instead watch Edge Of Tomorrow which is 100x better. At least there when the hero faces unreasonable odds, the hero actually dies.

can't be bothered to think up a vote.

The Tomorrow War 4.5/10
Already been said but it lost 1 point because of the end. The movie is a decent dumb action flick but the ending got real dumb.

The Ice Road 3/10
Another dumb one. You know everything that is going to happen in this movie without having to watch it, predictable.

You may find the 151 is why you gave it a 2/10 instead of a 1/10. As it jumped from one disconnected scene to the next, you sit there wondering... what did I miss. Turns out what I missed were missing pieces in the story line they didn't put in the movie.

The Kominsky Method - Netflix - Season 1 - 7.5/10 Finished this last night. It's a fun and easy to digest comedy. Michael Douglas plays an older actor who kind of never made it big in Hollywood but has managed to create a middling but successful enough small acting school. His best friend Sandy is a very wealthy agent who has navigated the halls of Hollywood very well. The show basically just captures their friendship and grumpy banter as they explore the later years of life, from romance to loss, and all the knowledge, experience and almost sadness and regret it brings. Hoping season 2 is also decent.

I found the ending to be a huge let-down, especially when I read the book it was based on afterwards. wtf ('All You Need Is Kill', was a pretty good read IMO).

The only thing further I'll say about 'Edge of Tomorrow' 's ending is that they took a book with a completely different conclusion, then Tom Cruise (or someone who usually writes screenplays for his movies) said, "let's give it a Tom Cruise ending". So if you like how Tom Cruise movies typically go these days, you'll like this!

I watched The Words on Flix, which is a 2012 film about a plagiarized book. It was pretty deep and gripping, and I found it amusing that it's apparently based off of German book that was also turned into a movie. It's like plagiarism Inception!

I'd give it a 7/10.

Just watched F9. Somehow, the most difficult thing to believe was that John Cena fits inside a late-model Supra. Reference screenshot from the trailer:

Also, a review:

1. It's all action. Like, right from the very beginning. No time to breathe! Just action! ALL the action! Swinging cars! Space cars!

2. Whereas before they kind of alternated between semi-realistic & ridiculous timelines, it's 100% ridiculous now.

3. I learned that my Mustang is capable of off-roading!

4. I don't know how to rate these things. 6/10 I guess, but absolutely worth a watch on the big screen for sheer awesome ridiculousness.

5. They break the fourth wall multiple times. I think it's the director acknowledging how ridiculous the story has gotten lol.

6. I love it. F10 please!

7. Still can't handle the bad guy haircut

You two were very generous in your ratings. I had a slight glimmer of hope when they tackled and discussed the time travel paradox with a better than average approach. Unfortunately there was another 2h and 15 minutes to deal with.

That book sounds good, because the movie was pretty damn cool, until the end. Felt rushed and hasty and poor.

There is no way that is supposed to be John Cena's stunt double.

- pretty sure that is a chick
- black hair
- long black hair, like cena has a buzz cut and that is down past shoulders
- about 200lbs lighter than Cena

You hitting the sauce again?

That...was a joke lol. John Cena is huge. That screenshot for reference was Mia Toretto climbing out of the window. You can see how small the car is because she barely got out of the window haha. The post was also a joke, because they took a Fiero to space, and yet seeing John Cena (big) climb into a late-model Supra (small) was what made me laugh lol.
