i watched, almost in its entirety, with juuust a touch of skipping here and there

Jungle Cruise - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870154/reference

it's a plot you have seen a million times before, with twists you have seen a million times before, but both Emily Blunt and Dwayne THE ROCK Johnson being actually entertaining to watch. It's no Indiana Jones, but it didn't completely suck. OR rather, it sucked early on, when they try to set up the characters, but it got better as the film moved along.
From a struggling 6, to a decent 6.9/10 by the end credits.

Dayum tho that 127m runtime.

oh yeah and i also watched all 3 of the Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition films.

The more i watch this, the more i skip. I must be down to about 3hours runtime between the 3 films, which is less than 1/3.
Gollum is annoying AF.
Treebeard is also annoying AF.
Eowyn and Faramir are the only two decent actors, capable of showing relatable, human emotion. Viggo Mortesen is so ridiculously wooden, and yet he got the lead AND he got to snog one of the most beautiful women in the world while in elf drag.
The sets are epic.
The shakycam sucks balls, and OH GOD it's all shakycam.

.. i mean, speaking as a person made of pure hate, i respect Peter Jackson for having made this production happen, because that on its own is a feat as important as directing. But this is where my praise ends.

Incidentally related, why is everyone on the internet so f* in love with Boromir? He fell to the power of the ring, tried to kill frodo, and by pure coincidence did not ruin everything. He's weak-minded, stupid, arrogant, and died like a bitch to a band of uruks.

the special edition of alien resurrection isnt special. its worse. the intro sequence in particular is quite stupid. the director had nothing to do with it. he even stated he prefers the theatrical cut.

I finally sat down and watched The Wrestler.

Other than the constant shaky cam its a perfect film about a guy holding on to his dreams.

The Professor And The Madman - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5932728/reference

Interesting period piece, based on the real life of self-taught lexicographer and polyglot James Murray.
In 1870s england, an unusual conjunction of two extraordinary men happens under the roof of the Oxford Academy; faced with the impossibility of compiling a dictionary, for "the words change faster than we can write them", they decide to hire an outsider, in the person of Murray, played by a Mel Gibson is such top form that you have never seen him in his entire career.
At the same time a second character, PTSD-suffering US Civil War surgeon William Chester Minor (played by a fantastic Sean Penn), can only find solace from his hallucinations in the perusal of books.
The two being a relationship which is at the core of the plot. If you have enjoyed A Beautiful Mind, i believe that you will find this the superior film. Both Gibson and Penn serve their characters rather then themselves, which both helps make the film more believable, and serves as praise to the director Farhad Safinia, currently on his second(!!) director credit.
Interesting sets, decent photography, quality dialogue, if a bit dispersive. Good work from all the supporting cast.

I have to warn you that this is not an easy film. The majority revolves around the insanity of Minor, there is plenty of conflict, and mysery. Both characters experience more loss than success, so don't go into it expecting "fun".

My vote: 7/10 if you are looking for an entertaining film, but 11/10 if you have been following Mel Gibson's, or Sean Penn's acting careers.

There was a nice thread on reddit about The Birdcage. I think it's about time to re-watch that movie. It's been a while but it's such a great one. Robin, Nathan and Hank are perfection.

i watched ..
.. i skimmed ..
.. i tried in all earnest to tackle Memories Of Murder - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0353969/reference

Whose biggest claim to fame is that the director is named "Bong".

The plot revolves around a detective in early 1980s south korea. He is tasked with investigating a double murder, but is incompetent, presumputous, corrup, tortures suspects, plants evidence, is oblivious to evidence, etc..

I suppose this is the main point of the film. The sad story of this failure of a man as a social commentary.
As the plot advances another character is brough it, an investigator "from the big city" who has more modern, not-quite-as-illegal methods.

Regardless of this, the film does not take the expected "buddy cop" turn as they continue to fail at every occasion. And no, they don't solve the murders.

I would classify this film almost as a horror, with very little horror in it. A thriller where anguish and failure are the main dish.

The film had a historical great success in south korea, proving once again that koreans will vote 10/10 every piece of junk that comes out of their country.
The film is decently made, but not terribly exciting from a production point of view. The acting is adequate, but the characters are so insufferable, and there is really nobody to root for in this ... horror police buddycop action thriller comedy ??
In my opinion, it may have some relevance in people who are interested in script writing, but otherwise i would give it a 6/10.

the bird cage was kinda funny if you like watching Robin Williams act silly. But it has a meagre plot and most of the rest of the cast is weak by comparison.
In fact I was just looking at Rotten Tomatoes and I noticed that about half of his movies are considered stinkers. He pushes too hard and sometimes that leads to great comedy but sometimes it also leads to crap.

The Chosen (from IOS App store) - 8.5/10 so far.

It's a series about Jesus' early ministry with the, clueless at this point, disciples. Focuses well on the humanity of Jesus, and not just his divinity (as movies often do presenting Jesus as being very stoic). Two season in right now.

Birdcage is one movie where Robin clearly held himself back and let the other characters/actors do the more comedic stuff. I thought Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria crushed it, with Nathan being slightly ridiculous. Hank was hilarious. Gene Hackman played his role well.

Robin played his character more as a kind of sensitive and nurturing guy, less silly by far compared to other roles that he did that would be considered comedy. I think it's considered one of his more restrained comedic turns.

On another note, Dead Poet's Society is one of my favorite movies ever.

The latest episode of Ted Lasso touches on the issue of athletes bringing attention to news items while on the field. I liked it. Less heavy handed than it could have been. Well written and thought out.

Every Breath You Take - 5/10

A psychological thriller starring Casey Affleck. I really have nothing nice to say about this dumpster of a movie. Acting sucked, writing sucked, plot was thin.

Best part was the house he lived in, beautiful home.

The Suicide Squad

Better than Suicide Squad. Not as good as Gunn's work on Guardians or even Guardians 2. I was entertained for pretty much all of the 120ish minute run time. Probably went just a bit overboard with the violence and gratuitous gore at times. Overall, would watch again but likely won't be joining my list of go-to movies.

Sorcerer - 8.5/10. Pretty dang tense and well-acted. I can't believe I never heard of it until sometime last year, and never got around to watching it until last night.

The guy from Jaws is in it, in case you were wondering. Not the nerdy dude or the ship guy, but the cop dude.

Suicide Squad 2: 5/10

what a piece of garbage.
too much dumb comedy.

I knew this movie was going to be stupid when workers in Waller's office were betting on who would get killed.

Waller is no nonsense and she wouldn't have permitted this.
Her workers wouldn't even try because they fear her.

I liked suicide squad 1 much better.

Different strokes for different folks.

IMO, outside of Harley's outfit, the first Suicide Squad sucked.

I didn't think the 2nd was great by any means, but the bar was so low from the 1st one, the 2nd one was better by default.

Plus, I might have been the only one, but the Polka Dot Man made me immediately think of our very own BobBobBob.

i have obviously watched Rick & Morty, and while it's still good, i get the impression that this season has seen a massive increase in the amount of dialogue. There's hardly a moment they ever shut up, or pause, or hum, or just be normal. It's a constant stream of .. well, smart dialogue, i'm sure, but, just too much of it. Do you really need that much to make you story work?

it took me a while to reply to this because i had to line up the words correctly in my head, first.

I will make a comparison with a really good film from the 80s, Twins - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096320/reference

see, Twins is a crime drama. At times you forget, but then the film rapidly turn back. Vincent (DeVito) is a piece of shit, and while he has a liking to Julius, and to his GF as well, he is so convinced that life is nothing but crooks, that he is ready to sell them all out. The twins' mother does not trust them either for the same reason - she has seen too many scammers.
So you take that vessel, the "crime/drama", and then you fill it with comedy.

I think THE ROCK has that kind of charisma as an actor that he's best suited for these tongue-in-cheek roles. But, he needs serious actors to back him up.
In fact Jungle Cruise was not bad, but the script took itself too seriously. That "reveal" scene where THE ROCK says he's four-hundred years old is sooo cringeworthy, just no, that's not what we want.

Honestly, i think the guy can be great, you just need to put him into the right film.
