sooooo, the critics are mostly giving spider man no way home good reviews, but theres a lot of talk that its pretty much just fanservice and not much else.
I thought it was pretty enjoyable for the most part (I'd give it an 8 out of 10), but yes, there are definitely some scenes that aim to please the fans. As shown in the trailer, they've brought back some characters from previous Spiderman movies and this movie elaborates on those character arcs. For fans of the previous Spiderman movies, I think No Way Home will be a treat. I'll leave it at that.

Has anyone here seen Matrix Resurrection yet? If so, can you let me know if someone who liked episode 1 but disliked episodes 2 and 3 is going to be a fan of it? Reviews so far have been mixed.

good to know, lol. I still haven't watched it, thought I would tonight, actually, but didn't.

I believe Matrix 2 is the worst thing put to celluloid, and Matrix 3 was only slightly not as bad. Liked, enough, the first One, so yeah...I'm in the same boat.

maybe watch in a couple of days. dunno.

Anyway: Doom Patrol: 10.5/10 (through first half of season 2, anyway, after being absolutely charmed by season 1, last year).

One of the just best things I have seen on the TV in...that I can remember. up there with Mad Men and Band of Brothers and I don't need to/have no ability to explain why. But it's there. If you disagree: fuck off.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST THIS THING IS DOG SHIT!

Not only is it blatant nostalgia-milking, but the jokes are all meta upon meta upon meta. The self-awareness is mind numbing. And its not clever, its just really god damn irritating. That along with all the incredibly blunt symbolism makes watching this a chore, not a pleasure.
Some symbolism not as blunt. Like neil patrick harris and his blue glasses, as he obviously represents the blue pill philosophy.
Of course, just 5 minutes earlier they were doing actually red and blue pills, and meta/self-aware jokes about the pills, which again, were not clever just annoying.

This fucking film is a chore. I'm glad I didnt drag my ass to a movie theater for it.

What? You haven't watched any Wachowski brothers/sisters flick yet? They were all like this. always. Accept it, then get on with it? I guess you finally realized why they all kinda sucked?

The Kings Man is set to open today, alongside the remake of West Side Story.
Dune is still playing in 130 theaters. People love it.

gotta admit: I kinda want to see West Side Story in a thea-ter.

Some scenes? The movie was a nostalgia bomb. The entire thing was fan service. And it often worked, as long as you don't think about the actual plot.

He's talking about the new Matrix. I could have told him that without watching the film lol.
Good god it was all terrible.
The whole thing is an allegory/metaphor/meta-commentary on the Matrix franchise and its fans and its actors (most of the first half is obvious references to Keanu Reeves being pigeonholed as "that matrix guy"). And none of it is funny or clever. That scene of overly cynical millennial d-bags talking in the office was especially annoying. They were clearly quoting message board posts from the early 2000's when the movies were still fresh and cool. I think the Wachowskis believe they would deflect the obvious accusations of nostalgia-milking by addressing it head on, but it just comes across as obvious and unimaginative. I can see why only a handful of actors bothered to come back.
And Neil Patrick Harris seems to be the most self-aware. His ham and cheese performance as the villain and copy of the Architect is full of sarcasm and cynicism. Its both the most sarcastic and most genuine performance at the same time. Kinda funny. But also tiresome.
Oh, as far as the actual plot goes, they just copy story beats and action sequences from earlier films, but poorly. Its not entertaining at all.

If you like feeling nostalgia for movies and also like having that nostalgia rubbed in your face, go stream it. Not worth a trip to the theater, in my opinion.

For once, i am not in the camp of "BUT OFC IT'S GONNA BE BAD". Not to say that i was *excited*, but i was .. neutral.

I thought Bill & Ted 3 was pretty darn awful (despite the failry positive reviews) and, while i think Keanu is a great guy in real life, he rarely works well as an actor. Even John Wick 1/2/3 have some pretty cringeworthy acting from K.R. when he's delivering lines, he is however a good physical actor, so, yeah. And ... didn't Trinity die, in Matrix 3 ?
Anyway, Matrix 2 + 3 were awful, after which they directed Cloud Atlas (bleah) and Jupiter Ascending (double bleah, although not awful direction, the script was atrocious). I didnt watch Speed Racer.

... but it's been a many years, and so *maybe* Matrix 4 could have a decent script.

Also i am a fan of NPH so i will probably still watch this, at least to see what it was about. In streaming, ofc, no way i would pay for a theater ticket. I gotta tell you, it's disappointing to hear that they too have jumped on the nostalgia bandwagon; the Matrix IP is so broad in scope that you could write anything as a script and still manage to shoe it in the world, that you could surely do better than "hey, remember when we did kung-fu fighting?".

imagine here a gif of the South Park 'member-berries being utterly prophetic.

I see you can rent it on Amazon, but I don't know anywhere it is a part of a subscription. I have all of Hitchcock's films on DVD, I might have Rear Window on Blu-ray.
No, Grace Kelly does not do any nudity in it, she plays the main characters girlfriend, not one of the girls in the windows. The best you get from her is a scene where she wears a silk nightie.
One of the great storytelling skills that Hitchcock perfected is to imply things that are not shown. In this show all of the nudity is implied. The most direct implication is we see Ms. Torso's back (played by Georgine Darcy (I had to look that one up)) as she puts on a shirt, implying that our protagonist saw her getting dressed.
Check again. It's part of your prime subscription.

I was talking about Rear Window. It is on Amazon, but they want 3.99 to watch it. Not a bad price on it's own, but I refuse to pay a subscription fee and then be asked to pay a per view fee on top of it.
Just imagine if Blockbuster had charged you to walk in the door and then again to rent any of the DVDs. That is how Amazon do.

There is free source for some Amazon pay movies called Tubi. It has commercials but I have to go to the bathroom anyways. I can finally watch Martyrs 2008 without paying extra

Lawrence of Arabia 10/10

One of those movies that dominates the Oscars, it vies for the greatest ever. Up there with Seven Samurai for cinematic excellence, maybe superior. Such a masterpiece. Filmed in 70mm, my friend who aspired to be an auteur dragged me to see it at a terrific venue in Los Angeles.

Auteur:

a filmmaker whose personal influence and artistic control over a movie are so great that the filmmaker is regarded as the author of the movie.

I've seen it since. I have a DVD, bought the 50th anniversary Blu-ray in 2018 but didn't watch it until last week. It's one of those rare movies that has an intermission.

Brilliant casting, script, acting, visuals, deserves to be seen as intended, i.e. in 70mm, but upscaled Blu-ray on my 4K system is pretty magnificent.

HBO has the original 3 Matrix flicks in 4K and Dolby Vision, so I rewatched the first Matrix. Great movie of course. I watched the second one too, eh, comme ci comme ca. I started the third and I'll finish it at some point. I mean it comes with the service. I guess that means I'll have to watch the fourth one. They are good options for movies when you don't want to use your brain too much.

I watched the fourth Matrix.

I don't understand the severity of the negativity surrounding it. Yes, it was a bit heavy on nostalgia, but for a singular purpose.

I took it as an extremely insightful comment on mental health therapy in America. Including the demand that mentally ill and/or gender divergent people (or neurodivergent people such as myself) MASK themselves to suit society and their therapists.

Looking that theory of the movie up, I found I am not alone.

I'm guessing the Wachowski's have faced some serious bullshit in therapy, as I have I.

Overall Score: 7/10
Action: 8/10 (generally quite well done)

Being the Ricardos is not a great biopic, or even a good use of 2 hours, but Aaron Sorkins writing style is as good as its ever been and thats a pretty solid reason for watching it.
And if you are an Alia Shawkat fan this is good stuff for her.

9/10

Watched Spider-Man: No Way Home. I enjoyed it, but I'm unsure of a score. Maybe 9/10?

Is it a cinematic masterpiece? No. But it is MUCH better than the movie I saw yesterday, Eternals. It's almost as long, clocking in at I think 148 minutes vs Eternals 157. There were a few times where No Way Home dragged a little bit but nowhere near the extent of Eternals.

My gut reaction is to say that No Way Home is one of the best MCU movies. It doesn't have the "WOW" factor that the first Iron Man had and it's not as enthralling as a Captain America but in the grand scheme of the 'superhero movie formula' I'd be hard-pressed to find one that did it better. It's DEFINITELY the best Spider-Man movie ever.

Good action, some comedy, the actors (even Zendaya!) actually expressed emotion on screen. Some fan service, but well done in my opinion. I, a self-proclaimed cheapskate, might even pay to see it in theaters again, this time with the wife (took the boys today).

Roadrunner - the Bourdain documentary - 9/10

A great piece on a fascinating character. I could have watched more.

We also saw The Courier, with Benedict Cumberbatch, cold war spy movie based on a true story - that was quite good as well. 8/10. He is a really good actor and doesn't fail here.
