He's talking about the new Matrix. I could have told him that without watching the film lol.
Good god it was all terrible.
The whole thing is an allegory/metaphor/meta-commentary on the Matrix franchise and its fans and its actors (most of the first half is obvious references to Keanu Reeves being pigeonholed as "that matrix guy"). And none of it is funny or clever. That scene of overly cynical millennial d-bags talking in the office was especially annoying. They were clearly quoting message board posts from the early 2000's when the movies were still fresh and cool. I think the Wachowskis believe they would deflect the obvious accusations of nostalgia-milking by addressing it head on, but it just comes across as obvious and unimaginative. I can see why only a handful of actors bothered to come back.
And Neil Patrick Harris seems to be the most self-aware. His ham and cheese performance as the villain and copy of the Architect is full of sarcasm and cynicism. Its both the most sarcastic and most genuine performance at the same time. Kinda funny. But also tiresome.
Oh, as far as the actual plot goes, they just copy story beats and action sequences from earlier films, but poorly. Its not entertaining at all.
If you like feeling nostalgia for movies and also like having that nostalgia rubbed in your face, go stream it. Not worth a trip to the theater, in my opinion.
For once, i am not in the camp of "BUT OFC IT'S GONNA BE BAD". Not to say that i was *excited*, but i was .. neutral.
I thought Bill & Ted 3 was pretty darn awful (despite the failry positive reviews) and, while i think Keanu is a great guy in real life, he rarely works well as an actor. Even John Wick 1/2/3 have some pretty cringeworthy acting from K.R. when he's delivering lines, he is however a good physical actor, so, yeah. And ... didn't Trinity die, in Matrix 3 ?
Anyway, Matrix 2 + 3 were awful, after which they directed Cloud Atlas (bleah) and Jupiter Ascending (double bleah, although not awful direction, the script was atrocious). I didnt watch Speed Racer.
... but it's been a many years, and so *maybe* Matrix 4 could have a decent script.
Also i am a fan of NPH so i will probably still watch this, at least to see what it was about. In streaming, ofc, no way i would pay for a theater ticket. I gotta tell you, it's disappointing to hear that they too have jumped on the nostalgia bandwagon; the Matrix IP is so broad in scope that you could write anything as a script and still manage to shoe it in the world, that you could surely do better than "hey, remember when we did kung-fu fighting?".
imagine here a gif of the South Park 'member-berries being utterly prophetic.
