Our Flag Means Death - 8/10

Taika Waititi really can do no wrong. Like everything else he's been involved in, I love this show to no end. It's incredibly fresh and "new" and, depending on your sense of humor, incredibly funny. I understand it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but that could be said about any form of entertainment. There's a good long list of special guests, Rhys Darby is incredible as Sede Bonnet and toss in Taika playing Black Beard (sporting a familiar Mad Max outfit) is equally as great.

All in all, I love this show for so many reasons.

I have to watch Belfast then I'll have seen all the Best Picture nominees besides West Side story which I don't even want to bother with. Anybody rooting for a winner?

I don't' care too much about Oscars or any awards in general. I do like to use them as an compass pointing me towards some movies that I may have missed otherwise.
That being said, West Side Story is really good. I grew up with my mom listening to the soundtrack of the original and then watching it whenever it was on TV so I have a bias towards it I guess. I don't think it was needed to be remade, but it seems to be a pet project of Spielberg as he was/is a fan of the original too and he pretty much gets to do what he wants. I generally don't like musicals, but for this and a few others, I have a soft spot.

I generally don't either. I don't avoid them nor do I get too interested in them either. But my girlfriend really likes to watch all the best picture nominees at the least so I've been enjoying some too.

I'm glad I've seen some good flicks, drive my car being my favorite so far.

I really don't like musicals much on film, except childhood memories of Mary Poppins, but West side story could be the one I enjoy a bit. Maybe one day.

Just re-watched (for the umpteenth time) Der Untergang
One of the single bet WWII movies of all time
11/10

Didn't really like that one. It felt manipulative. I gather it took a few liberties with historical facts in the course of doing that, as well.

Same problem I had with Casino, only raised to the Nth degree. Sat there thinking "I really don't care what happens to any of these people, and I really resent the movie for trying to make me care. Will they all just hurry up and die, already?".

Casino? The Scorsese film? You don't have to cheer or care for the main characters in movies to think it's good. It seems like a weird perspective.

What's good about it though? Casino, I mean. A group of thoroughly unlikable and uninteresting characters being unlikeable and uninteresting. I thought it was one of the dullest movies I'd ever seen. If you don't feel any interest in the characters or care what happens to them there's not much to hold your attention, especially in such a ludicrously long movie.

Really don't get what was supposed to be interesting or entertaining about it. Weird thing was that Goodfellas was a very similar story, but had so much more pace and style, and even characters you could at least find interesting, if not actually likeable at all. It's as if he decided to remake a high-energy 3 minute punk rock song as a turgid multi-disk prog rock concept album.

Woha, ok but 10/10? I also liked it, i wouldn't say it's better than MIB1, i would say that, it's different. And AS GOOD, in my opinion. MIB 1 is a much simpler film, MIB 3 tries to go a bit more indepth. It doesn't seem as good as MIB 1 because MIB 1 is a veeeery simple film, and, hey, nothing wrong with that, but you gotta admit that it's difficult to write "depth" for characters like K.
Oh damn. Apparently I really, really, really need to carefully re-read my posts and work on my communication skills (or what passes for skills at least).

You are absolute right. MIB I is non pareil. hands down, no argument. A solid 11.5 (sorry for making my rating system up as I go along).

MIB III is certainly different. I'm not really wild about the young K but f***, who ever wants to be compared to Tommy Lee. It's like being compared to Elvis. Are you sensing my steamy man crush?

The acting and flow in III is solid. It's also sort of bizarre, but to my mind, that's always good if you can make it work and I think they did.

If I had to nitpick about something, due to the time travel aspect, you sort of know how things are going to work out, but that's cool if the story is engaging and it is.

From Dawn to Dusk - 6.5/10

I just love the shit out of this kind of film. But at the risk of being crucified, I really liked the series better.

This was typical Tarantino. Start with a bouillabaisse of mayhem, give it just enough structure to make some bizarre sort of sense, then keep kicking that shit up one notch after another.

I'm not much of a Tarantino fan but I don't think there's any argument that Pulp Fiction is an all time classic. DtD was pretty clearly made more for fun than art and it was definitely fun.

I mean everyone has their own opinions and that's perfectly fine. There's lots of movies/shows that are deemed classics that I just could never get into. Certainly in regards to Casino you are in the minority as to whether or not its "great". I guess people love it for varying reasons, but for me it's about the performances by all the actors, the setting, the ambiance, the story itself (based on true events/people)... its just all around an impressive collection of talent in front of and behind the camera all simultaneously doing some of their best work.

And, for what it's worth, I generally dislike all the characters and who they are and what they are doing. I think the actors (and direction) did an excellent job of making me feel that way.

Looking at the list, I haven't seen any of them (though I don't watch many movies). I do intend to watch Dune at some point. Any you recommend?

i suspect either Dune of Dont Look Up will win; the reasoning is that the Oscars weigh both the quality, and the popularity. Nobody wants to vote a winner that the general public despises, because that makes the Oscars look bad.

Dune, on the biggest TV you can find with preferably some sort of speakers. I loved Drive My Car, and after a slow start it really worked for me. It's all subtitled though, which is how it should be watched though.

CODA is a total formulaic crowd pleaser, but it's a good one that does touch on interesting subjects/metaphors - enjoyable if you aren't a film snob. Licorice Pizza, not amazing but good and interesting enough, a quirky film worth watching, a unique love story. King Richard - I mean the story of the Williams. Another crowd pleaser - yes the movie does gloss over things about Mr. Williams that are concerning so take it all with a grain of salt, but it's a good yarn and I mean you do see the real life sisters and what they do. Will Smith pulls it off. I couldn't get into Power of the Dog, we turned it off. My gf tried to watch it again, and she still couldn't finish it. Don't Look Up - I thought the first third was hilarious, then it went to mediocre and below mediocre, with a few quality moments in the second half but they were farther and few between. Left me disappointed but I did get some belly laughs in the first third that made me glad I watched it.

I actually haven't seen Belfast or Nightmare Alley yet, I forgot about that, going to put on one of those tonight. They both seem worth watching though.

CODA might sweep in, it's like a better Forrest Gump feel good movie.

C.H.U.D. 6 / 10

I saw it in the horror section back when video rental stores were a thing, but I never watched it until I came across it on Prime Video tonight.

The audio on it wasn't great (typical of low budget horror movies of the 80s), but while not original in any way compared to other movies I've watched, I enjoyed it.

It even had a just-getting-started John Goodman (as "cop in diner") in it for a very short scene.

The Bombardment - Netflix

Has anyone seen this one? Kind of hard to watch but very well made, mostly well acted with great cinematography. Not what I expected and not for the squeamish but kind of haunting.

hadn't heard of this one.
Looks like the original title is "The Shadow in My Eye" or "Skyggen i mit Oeje" from 2021.
I will have to check it out.

Thats correct, foreign made, Danish IIRC. Dubbed very well also, not distracting. Based on true events but some creative license as usual.

i could swear i had read here a few weeks back a good review for Rubber - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1612774/reference/

.. which took me 10 years to watch. For someone who loves film, that's pretty bad.

Ok, so.
If you want to get someone to watch Rubber, DO NOT tell them "oh, it's the story of an animated tyre". Because it's not that.
What Rubber is, is a experiment is surreal scriptwriting, and i promise, it's got setpieces that i have never seen in any other film. Example (ACTUAL SPOILER BELOW);
There is a scene in which an actor, while in character as The Sheriff, goes to speak to the other supporting police characters, and tells them that "the film is over, you can go home". But the supporting characters are not actors, just characters, and do not understand him. And then, he finds himself stuck in the role of the character, instead of being able to return to being an actor.
There is something vaguely similar in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, where they discuss if they are just characters and not real people. Both are, technically, a breach of the fourth wall, and yet neither acknowledges the viewers.

Rubber is, on the surface, the story of a tyre which comes to life; it also finds it has supernatural powers, and that it enjoys killing stuff. This is merely an excuse to write in a ton of hyper-surreal stuff, but, not "surreal" as in The Holy Mountain, or other films where you can see the imagery but have no idea what the fuck it means, here instead it's surreal, but it's very clear what each scene means. By no means is this ham-fisted, it's actually done in a very clever way, i would say .. innovative.

Rubber certainly doesn't try to improve modern filmmaking, instead, it moves in the opposite direction; you cannot be a passive spectator, you need to squeeze your brain to understand what you are watching, but it's done well enough that this is actually both possible, and also not terribly difficult, assuming you have some experience (and a bit of cynicism).

Obviously Rubber is very weird and will likely only interest weird people. The story it tells is not about what you see on the screen in THIS film, but what you have seen in OTHER films. And you, the spectator, are the most important character in this film. You need to really know your cinema, to understand what the film is referencing, you need to know your tropes, but if you do, you will be rewarded.

8/10 - i cannot believe i waited this long.

@DigDog - interesting. I don't do well with symbolism. Well, in most cases it has to be beating me over the head with a 2x4. It's the same reason I don't like art, poetry, lit, or pretty much anything else one my be inclined to call art. In the past I've rationalized that thinking, can't you just f***ing tell me what you want to say? But the fact of the matter is, it just doesn't register. That's still true but I finally came to the realization that art has the advantage of getting into your brain via your emotions. And that's just infinitely more powerful than plan, to the point, prose.

Oh, music on the other hand can be almost a religious experience for me - go figure.

OK, I came here to see if anyone is watching S03 of Atlanta.

Who? What? Yeah, not what you want to call crazy popular. I looked up the ratings and for S02, in general viewership (not demo), it started with about 800k and gradually slid down to 550k by season's end. That probably explains why this season doesn't seem like it will have much of anything to do with the actual city. Eh, don't care.

I'm also not going to give it a rating since I both am and am not the target audience. Not even going to try to explain.

However, if you can, I would encourage you to watch the first 5 minutes of S03E01.

No spoilers. I'm just going to say that virtually the entire cast is black and in that scene, two guys are out fishing near a long bridge - one white, the other black. The white guy says a bunch of stuff that is tangentially race related and halfway through I'm thinking "Mother f***er, I have never seen anyone talk that long out of their ass. I mean, shit cracker, you're right on, but why do I get the feeling you don't actually understand any of that. And it turns out he doesn't - but not for any reason you could possibly guess.
