From Dawn to Dusk - 6.5/10

I just love the shit out of this kind of film. But at the risk of being crucified, I really liked the series better.

This was typical Tarantino. Start with a bouillabaisse of mayhem, give it just enough structure to make some bizarre sort of sense, then keep kicking that shit up one notch after another.

I'm not much of a Tarantino fan but I don't think there's any argument that Pulp Fiction is an all time classic. DtD was pretty clearly made more for fun than art and it was definitely fun.
no offense, but I would think something you "love the shit out of" warrants more then a 6.5

You don't fancy comedy... Do you?
8-bit christmas had me laughing a lot. These days I'm getting my laughs from the reaction videos of MXR Plays youtube channel.

I learned from there that someone posted on Reddit that all men are bastards. Someone else posted that the inventor of the stethoscope (he was a doctor) had to invent it coz he was uncomfortable listening to the heartbeat of women by putting his ear on their bare breasts! Mankind must really hate that guy now

i have embarked on re-watching the entire The Thick Of It show - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0459159/reference/

which is twenty-four 1-h episodes, shot between 2005 - 2012. UK comedy .. disguised as a drama.
Tells the story of the going-ons inside the fictitious Department Of Social Affairs. While they are not particularly incompetent, the series portrays the work of government as being chaos, with most of the characters being unaware of what shit is going on, despite being convinced that they are actively doing a good job.
In fact, this series is the Art Of The Filler; the majority of each episode is people going on about something that will be almost irrelevant to - whichever fuck up this episode deals with - and then the situation quickly precipitates into total madness.

Armando Inannucci, the creator of the series, sought to have this show be the answer to Yes Minister, the absolutely brilliant 1980 - 1986 comedy series, which is similar in scope, yet more blatantly comedic. Instead, TTOI likes to disguise itself as a drama, with all the characters being oblivious to the comedic element. Centerpiece to this, is the brilliant performance of Peter "I was miscast as Doctor Who" Capaldi, playing the Chief Whip Malcom Tucker, his hilarious rants packed with vulgarity and abuse, of which, i shall provide a small sample .. below.

I have to say, i am not particularly fond of the hand-held-camera look, while it does help to give the show a bit of the realistic feeling, it's simply over-done. Aside from that, excellent show worth watching. Be forewarned, it's a sleeper.

Not a movie, but I've been watching "The Tunnel" on Prime. It's kind of the usual British detective stuff, with some French thrown in the mix. Not the best show I've ever seen...but watchable if you like Brit shows.

the british one, or the identical-but-shit US clone ?
Also worthy of mention that they are both remakes of the identical show Broen "the Bridge": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_(2011_TV_series)

Love, Death & Robots (Netflix series)

A bunch of completely unrelated short stories (between 5-20 minutes in length) in animated (CG) format (various styles), mostly sci-fi / fantasy in content, wildly varying in terms of gore / adult content, most are serious in content, some are comedy. I enjoyed the first series.

Last night I watched the 1st episode of Moon Knight. The rest of the series may end up sucking, but based on the 1st episode alone I'm going to say that Moon Knight is the most entertaining/enjoyable Marvel series ever... and quite possibly one of the best Marvel productions, period.

...and I'm completely, 100% Marvel/superhero fatigued, so something about this episode must be pretty good.

after watching the truly excellent first episode of Moon Knight, i watched instead the very much MEH film King Richard - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9620288/reference/

Starring Best-Actor Oscar winner Will Smith, it is the story of the Williams family, Serena and Venus - the tennis champions - and their scheming father, Richard.

And Will Smith can't act. No seriously, he can't act. His idea of playing this very-miscast character is to not open his lips when he speaks, and keep his body as still as if he had had a stroke.
EVERYONE in the film is better than Smith. The dialogue saves him, up to a point, and Richard is a .. sort of interesting character. It's not enough to carry a film for well over two hours, and unless you have a particular interest in the subject - the early tennis career of Serena & Venus Williams - you really should go for something better.
Also, the film tries to drive home the point that S&V's success is ALL due to the father's unusual training regime (i.e. to not let them play too early) but it's dubious if this is a point worth making, and if there is any truth to it at all.

.. i'm not sure why someone would watch this. If you are interested in Tennis, there's probably better biopics out there. The sisters are marginal characters that serve more as McGuffins than anything else, the real antagonists of the film are the various promoters, trainers, and various businessmen who want to secure the S&V deal, and, they are not even particularly nefarious.
The acting is .. fine, aside from Will Smith, who is ridiculously wooden. I can think of several black actors who would be faaar better in the role, effin Denny Glover would have been better. The production is good, the direction is okaish, doesn't really take any risks.

I mean, i expect the Oscars to be shit, but surely they could have given the Best Actor award to ANOTHER bad hollywood actor? Idk, Boiling Point, Power of The Dog, some Dune actor, but really they gave it to Will Smith? I honestly believe that the "i want the gun" scene from The Fresh Prince was better than anything i saw today.

6/10 -

i would say "add X points if you are interested in the background of the Williams sisters", but what you got here is a biopic that is mostly fictional. Much better to watch the vastly superior Pursuit Of Happyness which is better in everything.

That movie did make it look like Richard had more to do with his daughters' success. That he KNEW the future somehow or he manifested his dream of what he wanted for his daughters into reality. I don't know how much of that is true but most people, including the Academy voters, took that as fact and that's what got Will the Oscar. I would actually have enjoyed Denzel in this role. He does crazy wayyyyy better than Will. Samuel L. Jackson would be my No.2 choice. Will is more of a Comedy / Action star. He needs more movies like Men In Black.

i agree with everything.

It was not a BAD movie, it was made well from a cinematography aspect, but not trying to push any boundaries. The wife was okaish, the coach was good, the kids' dialogue was appropriate for kids. It was just ... it was just SO MEH. Will Smith's performance, the fact that Richard Williams isn't a terribly interesting character, and the obvious watering-down of the truth.
I suspect that the only people who think Richard Williams' story is interesting, are the Williams sisters who, incidentally, are executive producers of this film.

What is BAD, is the fact that this film won Best Actor for Will Smith. Not only this wasnt a good performance - let alone a oscarworthy performance - based on MY metrics, it wasn't a good performance based on THEIR metric. You dont have to be like me and think that all modern film is garbage, you can be a person who appreciates modern film, and still find better performances in just about ever film in the oscars list. There's better performances in THIS film; Jon Bernthal was waaaaaaaaaaaay better than Will Smith, and absolutely believable as the coach.

I enjoyed his acting in every scene.

My vote for the Best Actor would be Benedict Cumberbatch. He made me hate his character in the beginning and as the movie progressed, my feelings became mixed and I began to see him as a flawed human being. By the end, I felt sad that he died. It seemed a harsh end and maybe he deserved it but he made me like him enough to feel sad for him.

Looks like I'll have to watch it ASAP.
