i watched Futurama S08E01 and it was dreadful.

.. i've never been a big fan of futurama to begin with; some funny stuff, a few memorable episodes, but otherwise a show i could miss and not cry about it. But this was a particularly bad episode. Some "we're self-aware" jokes that were horribly flat.

OMG! I'm hooked on the game show BAGGAGE hosted by the late Jerry Springer. The game-show channel started playing episodes and I can't get enough. I call it a mix between THE DATING GAME and THE GONG SHOW.

And so.... what is YOUR BAGGAGE if you could be on this show?

Do you really want me to watch this?
i just want to have some fun, man.

EDIT: we did it, finally at page 999 of this thread.

Maybe if some mod of good sense locks the thread, we can open a new one (remember, this is the second film thread, the previous was locked at, idk, 650 pages) and work again to 999.
If we were to break into the 4-digit page number .. we would not have this chance again until it's 9999 pages long. We'd miss out at a chance of digital perfection, computer art.
THE WORLD WOULD END.

The Deepest Breath on Netflix is a pretty riveting documentary about free diving. I knew it was dangerous but not to the extent that they get into. Definitely worth a watch.

i watched Amistad - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118607/reference/

NOT starring Sir Anthony Hopkins. Or rather, mostly starring Matthew "those are rookie numbers" McConaughey, with sidekick Morgan Freeman, but Hopkins does come onboard at the 2 hour mark to steal everybody's spotlight.
Solid film based on a true story, well paced, good dialogue, excellent production - if not for some baffling external shots where the cameraman must have died, and a script that doesn't pull any punches when portraying the africans which are central to the plot. Steven Spielberg directs.

I liked it, but i wouldn't jump to recommend it. The appeal is primarily historical, as a story itself it's not my cup of tea. if i had to pick a film about the time period AND of the same time period as a film, i would go with Glory instead, but Amistad is still nice - probably the Hopkins monologue which lifts the film considerably just by itself.

Strange Days - been a while since I watched this and remember it fondly. Sure it has some crazy stuff, is a bit blunt, and a lack of character development for Juliette Lewis for example, but I love it. Good cyberpunk flick.

Bought my e-ticket online through Fandango. I looked for IMAX 70mm, there's only 30 on earth, 19 being in the USA, which are showing this in IMAX 70mm. OTOH, there are IMAX non-70mm, evidently. I picked my theater, having specified IMAX 70mm, there's several in CA. There's one in Dublin, CA, but it's 30 miles away. San Francisco's is less than 9 miles and I can take public transportation (B.A.R.T.).

Having chosen my theater, I had to pick a day, and then a start time, then my seat (It showed seating and which were taken, which still available). I wanted 2 weeks out but the seats available didn't appeal to me so I went to 4 weeks out and snagged one I really like.

Then, payment. It asked if I had a Fandango promotion, and I remembered that I do indeed. I went for the card. On the back it says it "never expires." I keyed in the code and Fandango said it was no longer good! So, I keyed in the card number, same thing happened. Goddamn! WTF! I don't remember how I got the card, I've had it for quite possibly over 10 years. I have no idea how much money was on it but it sucks that it says Fandango and "never expires" and Fandango says it's no longer usable.

Edit: Well, it looks like I can maybe recoup the card:

DO FANDANGO GIFT CARDS EVER EXPIRE?

No, Fandango Gift Cards never expire. If you are having issues using your Gift Cards, please contact our Customer Service Department at https://support.fandango.com/en_us/contact/contact-us-fandango-rkksORSDO.
So, I have had a Fandango Gift Card for a number of years, probably a BD present, it is for $25. Says on the back it never expires. But when I tried to buy my ticket to see Oppenheimer, Fandango said the code no longer works. Being the kind of guy who doesn't like to be run over by trucks, I have been wrangling with Fandango. Chatted a presumed person at their website, sent them I guess 3 emails already. Was asked to send them "screenshots" of the front and back of the card. I'd already provided them with the code and card number. I get two more emails asking for those "screenshots." I sent them JPGs in answer. Presumably it's pinging and ponging in their system somewhere. Their excuse was that the card was dormant from non-usage. I am a database programmer. I know that is total bullshit. They just hope that designating unused gift cards "dormant" will make them $$$$$$$$$$.

Got anything to do with Jim Morrison and the Doors? That's the title song on their 2nd album.

Edit: I guess not, but at least co-written by James Cameron so I'd expect it to be exceptional.

I was a big Simpsons fan but have never watched a Futurama episode, the preview stuff I see on Fox just looks unappealing.

Strange Days is very very good. There are some crowd scenes that from a cinematography perspective are unbelievable. i *strongly* recommend a big screen.

Futurama is .. eh .. it's got some good stuff in it. It's got some really, really clever stuff, but it's also got a lot of "vaguely-entertaining-Simpsons-level" stuff.

Futurama ha some high-highs but on average lower lows than the "good years" of the Simpsons. Its just never going to have that broad appeal.

Now the million dollar question is how you guy's feel about Groening's Disenchantment series on Netflix. Seems to swing even more wildly between staggeringly mediocre and remarkably poignant. Never a bad "background noise" cartoon to have on so long as you don't have kids around.

Mike Tyson Mysteries - Not saying a word. It's something you need to subject yourself to. A little like the first Sharknado in that sense.

Simple movie with this vulnerable looking, delicate and beautiful leading actress.

Might be too simple and chick flicky for most people but it left me happy. That's all I ask from a movie.

Just booked a ticket to see Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm in a month. Real good seat. I never do stuff like this but this isn't just any movie and it's also to celebrate my BD. Downtown San Francisco.

‘Oppenheimer’ Is the ‘Best’ and ‘Most Important Film of This Century,’ Raves Paul Schrader: ‘This One Blows the Door Off the Hinges’

“If you see one film in cinemas this year it should be ‘Oppenheimer,'” Schrader added in a Facebook post shared widely across social media. “I’m not a Nolan groupie but this one blows the door off the hinges.”

I thought it was a VERY good movie. One that makes people think, what kind of moral dilemma they were in. The race to end the war, at a huge civilian price. But then if you don't... even more civilians die in an endless war. The cast is fantastic, and the acting is also great.

It is especially interesting to me because I work for DOE in the nuclear field. I have been to Los Alamos, Nevada National Security Site (formerly Nevada Test site), Y12, and several others. Seen in person the impact areas that were used in the movie for nuclear testing. It is amazing how they look still to this day. Glass. I walk past the Oppenheimer building literally every day at work when not traveling. It will be there forever, it is a national museum. Its funny though, the general public cannot see it, have to have a badge to come on-site. The site I work at held the two bombs that ended WWII, Little Boy and Fat Man. There is still, a lot of work being done. Most of it is taking nuclear ordinance from other countries and repurposing it towards nuclear energy. But there is still work being done in the weapons field.

Strange days is a good egg. I'm going to watch ExistenZ again for the first time in well over a decade soon as well. As soon as I know I'll just sit through it in one go, I'll rent it.

How is it still on film? I would have guessed it'd have been filmed on digital and not needed the film-to-digital transfer.

Crazy though. I worked in a theater when I was a teenager and I recall how heavy those film reels were when they'd get delivered. Usually two reels per film, and I'd guess maybe 40-50 pounds for the set. So yeah...600lbs sounds insane.

Uh, because real IMAX = 70mm?

There is no digital medium in existence that can touch 70mm film.

The first few episodes of disenchantment were great: I was thoroughly amused by those homicidal dwarfs or whatever it was, episode 2 or 3 I think?

I believe I watched through 2 seasons, but it never really peaked beyond the homicidal dwarves episode, so I lost interest.

Yeah, never heard that before. Set off an A-bomb at desert sands site and you wind up with ... GLASS! Stark idea.

"For standard 70mm showings, the resolution is typically comparable to an 8K digital picture, with the potential of a wider "dynamic range" meaning more vibrant and accurate colors. The IMAX 70mm, however, will have a resolution that could be as clear as an 18K digital projection."

I didn't realize there was such a huge difference in resolutions. I thought the biggest difference was the aspect ratio and the dynamic range and color. I knew modern digital cinema cameras do up to 8K, but the equivalent of up to 18K? Jeebus.

No wonder there's so much demand for that particular medium/theater.
