Fixed that for ya. It seems that Terrence Malick's films are either loved or loathed by those that watch them. Either they're the deepest, most meaningful and beautiful pieces of artistic expression, or they're pretentious incomprehensible crap.

I watched The Thin Red Line a few years ago and couldn't even stay awake so I just avoid all of his movies now; they're not for me.

Funny!!

This could be true. I never saw The Thin Red Line, but The New World bored me stiff and I typically enjoy period pieces. Conversely, I always seem to find Darren Aronofsky pictures monumentally moving and Neil Marshall movies ridiculously entertaining. We might all have our preferred niche.

Well, as we seem to have gone off track a little with TV series, I'll throw in a couple that at least have some similarity to movies.

Code Geass - 10/10 (50 episodes)
Whereas a movie is a short stories/condensed novel, Code Geass is like an unabridged 1200 page epic. The wikipedia page describes its setting well:

(edited for flow)
The series is set in an alternative present, where the world is split by three superpowers: Britannia, The Chineses Federation, and the European Universe (EU). The story takes place after the Holy Britannian Empire's conquest of Japan, after which Britannia effectively strips Japan and its citizens of all rights and freedoms, and renames the country Area 11 with its citizens referred to as elevens.
The series' protagonist Lelouch Lamperouge is an intellectual, exiled Britannian prince who was sent as a hostage to Japan, along with his sister Nunnally, by his father, Emperor Charles zi Britannia, after his mother was murdered. He then vows to obliterate Britannia. Seven years later, Lelouch meets a girl known as C.C. who, in order to save his life, makes a contract with him. Lelouch then gains a power called Geass which allows him to absolutely command anyone to do what he wants, bending their will to live, fight, die, and follow orders – though only if he has direct eye contact with his target. With this new power and his natural intelligence, Lelouch sets out to find the person who killed his mother, and to make a better world for his sister, Nunnally.

Code Geass is no popcorn flick.

Spice and Wolf - 10/10 (S1)
Spice and Wolf is a very different storytelling style. You find in 99.9% of stories that the main character has gravity in his world -- the story either starts with events singling him out or his world ends up twisting that way -- if he enters a village, you can bet that a riot will break out, the baby Messiah will be thrust into his arms, or a dragon will attack who can conveniently only be defeated by our hero. Something will happen, because otherwise there's kinda no point to the scene. But Spice and Wolf manages to untwist the world (putting it back into normal balance) and still end up with something worth watching. In Spice and Wolf, the main character, Lawrence, is just a peddler. The show really just shows him doing his daily work towards his far-off goal of being able to open his own shop. In episode 1 he does pick up a wolf goddess (Holo) who becomes his companion on his merchant journey, but the described setting includes her: Lawrence and Holo navigate their world without being singled out in any way by the eye of the world. Those around them react to them normally, simply, and realistically.
It's quite refreshing and relaxing to watch a pairing that is not continually under siege. Spice and Wolf is the only story I've ever read or seen in which the main characters' lives are actually their own, and Holo and Lawrence are great together.

The Hangover - 3/10
I like sitcoms so I'm not totally against comedies but this was downright STUPID. Maybe it's the idea of drunk fucks doing stupid shit that I find more... how do I word it - STUPID than funny. Despite the title, I thought it would be deeper than that but... nope. No more comedy movies. I'm more pissed that I wasted days (Netflix) with this. Has a movie ever made you angry?

Midnight In Paris - 8.5/10: What a fun movie. I loved the premise and though it obviously makes no real sense, I was sucked right in and went along for the ride. Owen Wilson was great as Woody, he actually seems to be made for that role and I loved Ernest Hemingway as a character. Some of the others were hit and miss, but since everyone only had small amounts of screen time, they did not really have time to bother me. I was worried by the beginning of the film when the couples were together, because that stuff was getting on my nerves; Michael Sheen was a brilliant ass, but painful to listen to and I've never been a fan of Rachel McAdams, so when it diverged from that I was happy. Anyway, good movie; it's pretty slight, but damn fun.

A Separation - 9/10: I liked this quite a bit more than you slayer. The first 15 minutes or so is a slog and I thought it was going to be two hours of that, which I was not looking forward to, but thankfully something happens after a little bit and the story goes in a direction I was very much invested in. Seeing the two families being ripped apart by this one incident really worked for me; though you are mainly seeing it from the one man's point of view, you do get to see both sides of the story as it unravels, almost like a procedural film. All the while there is the struggle of the kid dealing with her parent's separation and her attempt to keep them together, with the senile Father being at the centre of it all, which adds yet another layer of emotional involvement. I'm not sure I actually felt the message they were trying to convey because I was 100% sympathetic with the main Father in the film and at no time did that waiver. I get the impression I was supposed to feel more for the wife, but I never did. After that first 15 minutes I was completely wrapped up in this and the remaining 1:45 flew by. Very good drama.

I now have a new record: 3 minutes.

Disaster Movie.

Can anyone tell me if I missed some tits or ass?

Three minutes! Impressive. I've never seen any of those movies and seems like I should not even bother when they pop up on TV.

In the Loop - 8/10:
British political black comedy/satire. I'm pretty sure this has been reviewed a number of times here, and I believe it's well liked. I was tempted to turn it off during the first five minutes, I didn't like how it started. It seemed like the humor was based on the ranting obscene insults that weren't funny at all, with a couple lame sarcastic remarks. There were a few of these "jokes" throughout the movie, but there were also some real funny scenarios as well. The movie has a nice large cast and some good characters. Maybe a bit too many, but still solid.

Hud - 8.5/10:
Paul Newman stars as heavily drinking, sleeps with married women, Hud. The story revolves around Hud, his father, and his nephew who work on their cattle ranch. Sick cows force them to work together and Hud clashes with his father.

It's not Newman's best movie, but it is a pretty great and somewhat different performance for him. Patricia Neal is beautifully wonderful

One, Two, Three - 9/10:
Billy Wilder directed, James Cagney starring. It's a story of a Coca-Cola executive in West Berlin near the border of East Berlin. He is soon given the task of looking after the daughter of his boss who comes to visit. This is a comedy of the screwball variety, mostly based on East/West capitalist/communist humor. It's a friggin riot. More than a laugh a minute. Very funny stuff

In The Loop is amazing. Freaking love that movie. Have not seen either of the other two; definitely need to see the Wilder film. Love Billy Wilder.

Haha ok well I'm glad you liked it. I just couldn't connect with any of the characters at all. The little bit I could relate to was broken by differences and disdain of our cultures. I saw more contrasts than comparisons. Wish I could have enjoyed it as much as most

Well yeah, if you are not connecting to any of them, it is going to be a tough film to get wrapped up in. For me, I connected with the Father a lot and even the other Father to a certain degree, so I was along for the journey.

Any movie script that goes against plain human logic drives me nuts. For example, in "Walking Dead", Rick's wife leaving the ranch to look for your husband.

Or "Touristas" or any other stupid horror flicks that send naive teens somewhere they are getting chopped up or eaten for lunch, just because "hey, look, let's take that turn and see what happens to us!!!"

All those turns are so predictable, it becomes a game to see who gets it first

Moneyball - 9/10
If you're a fan of baseball (and not even necessarily down to the statistical analysis level) like I am, you will love it. While they don't really get much into the weeds with the nerdy sabermetrics other than On Base Percentage (really what made Billy Beane famous in the first place) and some Slugging % (the big brother of the modern and widely used ISO stat to analyze power), it did somewhat show how that mindset revolutionized scouting today and how valuable having a "good eye" (even if you can't hit) is.

Pitt's character was pretty good although they did cheese up the plot a little by saying he didn't watch the games (totally unrealistic). Jonah Hill did a decent job as well, although I thought Pitt (Billy Beane) should have had a little more input into tweaking the computer program because they made it seem like he didn't really contribute much and that it was all Hill's (Assistant GM based on Paul DePodesta) computer algorithm that did all of the work and Pitt was just along for the ride. For example, Billy Beane had other great analytical ideas such as never drafting/signing high school players over college players which were never explored by the film.

Overall, if you're a baseball fan then this is a well done movie and I can understand that some cheesiness had to be added to enhance the story and get the general populace to actually care about Pitt's character Billy Beane: the GM of an underdog team who didn't have a snowball's chance in hell (or so people thought) of competing with big market titans like New York or Boston until he gained the edge through thinking out of the box and using some new math to quantify baseball talent.

Those joke predictions are brilliant, I could picture every single on of those happening.

I like baseball and I enjoyed the details in the actual baseball parts of the film, it was all of the flashbacks and family crap that killed me. Ruined the film for me; it needed more baseball, less other crap.

But see then you'd only get baseball fans in the theaters. My wife enjoyed the movie and she HATES baseball!

Oh and I saw one last night:

No Strings Attached - 6.5/10
It's an entirely standard and utterly predictable romcom, but it was still funny and enjoyable. Good choice on Netflix instant if you have a girlfriend or wife.

I agree that the family crap really hurt the film - it was fictitious and it was tacked on as a superficial layer, but like Astro said, it was probably necessary to get the chicks in the seats.

Oh yeah, I understand that, but I would have preferred if they had just committed to one side or the other, rather than just straddling the middle as they did. At least with Social Network they kind of went balls out with Zuck as the asshole; sure, there was a bit of relationship stuff in there at the beginning and the very end, but overall they committed to his almost maniacal compulsion to get Facebook done.

Maybe the Moneyball story is not as compelling as a film. Has anyone here read the book?

Shaolin Soccer - 8.5/10

Wow! This movie is fun. I watched the dubbed version on netflix, but they managed to do a pretty good of voice dubbing. It has got crazy special effects that look dated, but that does not stop you, in any way, from having fun. The interesting thing about this movie is it is cheesy, there is no scope for acting.. and yet they managed to make this movie an absolute riot. The thing I like about this movie is that they spent a lot of time getting the viewers connect with the characters.. the soccer part only makes up for 1/3rd of the film.

Elite Squad: The enemy within - 9/10

A crime/political drama, based in Brazil, that is absolutely fantastic. This is actually a sequel to Elite squad.. which I haven't see, but it does not take long before you come to grips with the story. This movies revolves around Mr. Nascimento.. a Captain of BOPE.. who gets promoted as the undersecretary of intelligence. The director manages to blend the elements of action, thrills, drama and plot twists with absolute perfection and fluidity.. also a special mention to the editing department of the movie..who have done an excellent job. If you haven't watched this one yet, make sure you spare some time for it.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad - 6/10: A documentary following the band Acrassicauda, who were the only metal band in Iraq at the time. I like the idea of this documentary a lot more than the actual documentary itself. On the surface it should be pretty interesting following the only metal band in Baghdad, struggling to even play gigs under Saddam's regime at the beginning, then later under fire of war, but the way it is put together really removed a lot of the interest for me. The director injected himself into the frame far too often with narration and short monologues which did little to help the story; I would have liked to have seen far more musical stuff from them (the guitarist was pretty awesome) and more straight-up interviews with the band and the bands' fans/family. It still had several interesting parts, but it kind of felt like a lost opportunity.
