Drop Dead Fred - 4/10

Doesn't know whether it wants to be a Lifetime movie (of the insane mother subgenre) or a new take on Peter Pan, and should make you hate the main character several times through its duration. Carrie Fisher, though? Totally awesome. Other reviews were way too positive for it, IMO (it was one of those random Netflix suggestions that kept coming up, in case you wonder why I bothered).

I watched that endlessly as a kid. It came as a gift because the gifter wanted to watch it, so she got it to watch it with us.

I loved that movie.... Had no clue who was in it though.

Searching for Sugar Man - 8.5/10

Documentary about a guy who was famous and didn't know it.

Singer from the USA becomes a music icon (like bigger than Elvis) in South Africa and no one bothers to tell him. Shysters and idiots collect and pocket the royalties and the guy lives his entire life in poverty working house demolition. 2 guys from South Africa want to write about his life story including how he died, but they find him alive and he ends up playing to numerous sold out concerts in South Africa.

Sounds like the Sharon Jones/Charles Bradley problem. Apparently Sharon is huge in Europe (I think Europe) but not the USA. Charles I think has the same problem. That's where Charle's Bradleys song "Why is it so hard" song was originally written. Thing is, with his background, it has a totally different meaning. He's lived in pottery all his life and at age 62 released his first album that is one of the best albums of 2011 according to Rolling Stone. So, the lyrics mean something slightly different to him even though it was written for another reason.

Check out the song:

Having said this, I watched his documentary. It's called Soul of America. I've watched it 3 times now. It is a wonderful story with some awesome music in it. 10/10. Hollywood seriously needs to do a movie on this guy.

Here is the link to the documentary with 2 minute trailer.

Gangster Squad - 8/10

Don't know if it's fictional or not, but it's about a group of cops going vigilante on some east coast mob boss. Good action. Not bad at all. Emma Stone is so pretty in this movie.

castaway - 5/5 - i hadn't seen this movie in a VERY VERY long time and it was cool watching it on the bigscreen again. man the airplane crash is very intense i did not remember that scene, and the sound is incredible at that scene too. the movie definitely did not feel as long as i remembered it feeling, even though it was 2 hours and 20 minutes. i'm just a big fan of the movie and like the environment and everything. i still wish it ended a little different, but i think if it did then the end would have felt a lot faker.

Twister 8/10

Haven't seen the movie in 17 years and just bought it on Ebay. A little cheesy in some parts, but it's surround sound kicks ass.

Where did you see this film? Purchased, Rental, Netflix, Roku channel...? Just curious because your review sounds interesting and I'd like to watch it as well.

Rapturepalooza - 8/10 - Comedy about the rapture and those that were left behind to deal with the antichrist much in the vein of Dogma. Has some pretty funny moments, and ends in a very unexpected bizarre way.

The History of Future Folk - 7/10
- Quirky comedy about an alien sent to take over the Earth but when he gets here he hears music for the first time and turns into a banjo playing sci-fi folk singer and of course people come to finish the job. It's an unusual movie, and the songs are actually entertaining, somewhat similar to Tenacious D, except about space aliens.

Silver Linings Playbook - 6.9/10 - Didn't know anything about the movie going in (as is my wont), aside from Bradley Cooper + Jennifer Lawrence + Oscar attention. I was disappointed. For one, its a romance. I'm not a hater, they just have a harder time satisfying me. I thought the acting was superb, but the plot subpar and contrived at times.
The whole parlay arrangement felt like it was out of a bad disney movie. They focused a lot on his mental illness early, then completely departed from that as the movie carried on. I presume they are indicating his medication was working, but that was a little subtle if so. Of course the ending was completely predicted, which is sad because f'ed up people don't always get happy endings and I think something a little raw'er could have worked

I watched it on Comcast On Demand off of Starz On Demand, but I saw it on the shelf in my local Mammoth Video when it first came out.

Star Trek: Into Darkness - 8/10
I knew nothing about this other than it was the next one with this reboot. Was actually surprised when the "villain's" name was said the 1st time. Big WTF moment for me as I had no clue that was what this was going to be about. Overall, very entertaining movie and damn Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome. Love him as Sherlock Holmes and he did an amazing job in this.
Also all I thought every time the high ranking guy Marcus character was on screen was "It's freaking Murphy/Robocop!"

Iron Man 3 - 8.5/10
It was better than the 2nd IMO. I was kind of conflicted in my opinion on how much
Iron Man wasn't actually "Iron Man"
. While it's cool to show
he's human and RDJ is the perfect fit for Tony Stark, I couldn't help but think at times "less Tony more Iron Man"
but I get it served a purpose and was done well enough that I can let is slide and enjoy the movie as a whole.
One part that I really thought was pointless was when
he destroyed all of the Iron Man suits. What good was that? How does that make Pepper happier? He's now defenseless until he creates a new suit.
Didn't seem needed IMO.
All that said, it was still a damn entertaining movie and top notch in action, visuals and acting by RDJ. Also damn was Gwyneth Paltrow fit. Was surprised, didn't seem like she'd be that fit.

Warm Bodies - 7/10
Had very low expectations before watching it but my wife wanted to see it and it was only 1 hour 37 mins long so not a huge time investment. I have to say though it was pretty entertaining and a nice change of pace on the whole zombie genre that's become so over played at this point. Was entertaining seeing things from the zombies perspective and the interactions between the main guy (guy that played Beast in last X-men movie) and Rob Corddry had me laughing pretty hard at times. Can't say I've ever seen the main actress in anything before but she did well and was easy on the eyes.

Total Recall 2012 - Extended Directors Cut - 6/10
I actually was super excited when I heard they were remaking this way back when. Then I heard Colin Farrell was going to star and my hopes went to nothing right away. He seems to take any movie that on paper sounds like it should be good and turns it into shit. I don't know if it's just him or he's like some bad luck curse that ensures anything he does will suck.
That said, I never saw the theatrical version so I can only comment on this version. First off, at least they did the
3 boobs scene!
That's just to trademark to have skipped and I assume it wasn't in the theatrical cut.
Colin Farrell actually did ok with the role. He's of course no Arnold but he did well enough. I didn't even know Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel were in it before seeing it so that was actually a plus in my book.

I get that this movie actually follows the book unlike the original movie and for that reason I'm OK with them
not going to Mars as much as I'd of liked to see it done.

All in all, it was better than expected since I expected so little but still won't compete with the special place I have in my heart for the original movie.

It was there, but I still thought it shouldn't have been. They did it without the "Mars = radiation = mutants" explanation of the original, so it was just pointless.

In the future there's a premium for women that have had a third boob added.

Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone - Good-time specialists Fishbone get the spotlight in this lively documentary about the all-black punk-funk band that sprang out of South Central Los Angeles in 1979, signing a record deal before they were out of high school.

I usta love listening to Fishbone when I was in school. Like any teen, my musical interests varied quite a bit back then, from Run DMC to Metallica in the span of a month, so I had soon moved on and forgotten about them. The story of the band's implosion and gritty details of each of the members problems are covered in this excellent documentary.

RottenTomatoes shows 43 reviews with a score of 100% - it doesn't get any better than this if you like the band or just music in general. It's my opinion that Fishbone was thee best live band ever to hit the stage - they were a phenomenal live show that never had a monster hit to pull them out of the shadows and onto the main stage.

Documentaries always affect me more than any other film. From this movie, 'The Two Escobars', 'Inside Job', 'Cocaine Cowboys' - they all made me think long and hard about the movie weeks, even months, after viewing it. A very solid 10/10 for my score.

Anchorman - 7/10
I never found Will Ferrell funny. He's low-brow predictable crap humor that requires zero wit. And unlike a real lowbrow stuff like Dumb & Dumber, it's just lame all around. EVERY MOVIE he plays the same character of a bumbling idiot. You could ALWAYS call what he'll do next.

I saw this movie because of all this Anchorman 2 hype. I didn't even know the original was considered good. It's nothing special. Few snickers here and there.

Wasn't as funny as I thought it should have been, it did have some really funny parts. but looking back, I could have easily waited for the DVD release.

I was pretty disappointed in the movie overall, and I'd probably give it a 5.5 or a 6.0. In my "How Much Would I Pay for It on Blu-Ray" scale, I would probably pay... $7.

The problem that I had with the movie is that it just wasn't funny enough, and while there were a few funny scenes (mostly in the beginning), there were a lot of dull moments in between. I think the biggest contributor to that is the fact that around 80% of the movie takes place in one location. I think that the movie would have fared a lot better if they had a bit more exploration of the outside world in it, which would have allowed more cameos. Hell, the last part of the movie where they were outside was probably second best to the beginning.

In other words, just leave after the first fifteen minutes. All you're missing is a
Bible lesson
(minor plot spoiler).

Warm Bodies - 7/10
The plot was stupid but I enjoyed the movie.

The Wicker Man - 6/10
NOT THE BEES!! I knew nothing about the movie other than Nicolas Cage getting stung in the face. The movie was creepy and slow.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters - 5/10
The acting was pretty bleh. Profanity in the film was forced. The plot was eh. I give it a 5 based on Gemma Anterton's outfit.

Anchorman is a classic. It has so many one liners in it that it deserves respect. That is often what makes a good comedy. The fact that you can quote it and laugh.

This is the End - 8/10

I really liked it - it definitely is a unique. Just a bunch of friends riffing on themselves vs the Apocalypse. I loved the cast (Danny McBride is killer here), I laughed a lot and I wasn't disappointed in it. I don't know if I would watch it 20 times over on HBO but I really liked it.

The Purge - 4/10

I was disappointed in this one - it could have been so much more than your standard home invasion movie.

Hangover 3 - 4.5/10

It sucked. I thought 2 was bad but this one is even worse. I hope that you like Chow because you get plenty of him here.
