This is how a superhero movie should be. Tons of action, great costumes, good acting, and the bare minimum on character development with humor mixed in every 30 minutes or so (not 5 minutes like your standard one). Superman was stoic yet humble, manly yet compassionate, and pretty much everything you imagine him to be. Nailed it.
Watched Oz: the Great and Powerful last night and I'm surprised by all the terrible reviews. It wasn't great, but I dont' think it was that bad either.
It is part adventure but all romantic comedy. Darius & Arnau are interns at a small Seattle magazine. When Jeff suggests a story about a bizarre classified ad, the three road trip it to Ocean Side to find the mystery writer.
The problem with Anchorman is that everyone watches it expecting a comedy. It's not. It is a documentary. No really, work in television news for 6 months and you'll quickly realize that this parody is less parody and more reality.
It's interesting. Watch TV news and you realize that it's kind of a parody of itself... in reality! I'm going to watch this movie. It will likely be a lot more entertaining (and keep me more awake) than watching the news.
I'm a zombie junkie. I read the book a long time ago. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but there are definitely some groan worthy plot devices. It's very intense and entertaining regardless.
I do find it interesting that Matthew Fox took such a small role.
The movie has a different vibe to it than Monsters Inc and was a little flat.
I have not gone to movies regularly since having two kids but the prices for a bag of popcorn and a soda is out of control. I think they would sell more if they lowered the prices. I could buy a 24 pack of Dr Pepper and a 6 pack box of microwave popcorn for what they charge.

Man of Steel: 8/10 - enjoyed a lot, plot could have been better in many areas, and other annoyances, but overall very entertaining.
This is the End: 1/10 - I've never walked out on a movie before, I walked out on this one. Unless you get stoned immediately prior to seeing this movie, in which case this could possibly be the greatest movie ever made, I recommend skipping it. About half-way through the movie it stops being funny and becomes just downright insulting.
Arrested Development (first 2 seasons so far) - 10/10
I don't watch a lot of TV, so I don't see a show unless I actively seek it out. I'm not sure why I never bothered with Arrested Development but I'm really regretting it. More than a couple of episodes have left me in tears from laughter. Every character is so perfectly cast and the show's pacing is perfect. I love all of the subtle humor behind all of the in-your-face wacky stuff.
Now that I'm familiar with it, I can't believe that this show was ever cancelled.
The Bling Ring - 6/10: Pretty disappointing effort from Coppola. Lots of discussion of people I don't care about shown through people I find deplorable and obnoxious. Emma Watson was good, as was the girl who played Chloe (she was hilarious), and there were a few decent scenes here and there, but overall it was pretty flat.
Men In Black 3 - 7.5/10: Surprisingly fun. The first 15 minutes or so was awful, but once the time travel kicks in and Josh Brolin joins the party, it was a very good time. I barely remember the first two films, but this one felt like it may have been the best one.
Battleship - 3/10: Way too long, far too many attempts to infuse some sort of emotion, and way, way too much Brooklyn Decker. She was distractingly bad and she's not even very attractive. Rhianna is distracting too, but at least she's worth looking at. Could have been better with thirty minutes shaved off.
World War Z - 8.5/10: A great, fast-paced, zombie action thriller. Pitt is great as is the chick he teams up with later on and I loved how we got to see the impact in various parts of the world. The opening sequences are great and really ratchet up the tension. There are definitely some holes, but I had a really good time int he theatre and the time just flew by.
The opening sequence was a 9/10. Clark finding himself, probably a 6/10. And from when Zod arrives on earth till the end of the movie, 100/10! This was probably the best attempt at capturing super hero action in a movie. Acting was fine, although they could have cast someone better for Lois Lane. I think the editing kinda ruined that middle section. It was just...random. Otherwise, its a pretty entertaining movie.
EDIT: Seen it a second time, and it still holds up. Best Superman movie that wasn't animated.
World War Z - 9/10 - Loved it. The Muse track they were using throughout fit perfectly. I generally prefer slow zombies but fast zombies definitely made for more excitement. Was not expecting as much action/suspense as there was.
I did have an 'oh come on' moment when they launched the prop cargo plane off an aircraft carrier lol.
Agreed. Some OK parts but I was expecting more. Not very funny, and just kinda dull.
Man of Steel: 8/10
Loved the movie. Action was superb, acting was great all around. I was just a little disappointed the last 10-15 mins of the flick where they duking it out in the city & fishbourne & his co workers were running around.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall 6.5/10: When I saw the commercial, it didn't interest me at all. It looked like a total run-of-the-mill romance comedy. I had totally forgotten that this movie existed until Reddit recommended that it was a underrated movie. So I saw it. WTF, it's exactly what I thought it was. Boring pile of crap. I'm mad because because it was actually recommended. Also why is this movie 2 hours?
Hot Fuzz 8/10: LOL, this movie is legit! It started out as a quirky predictable mystery story. Then it became far more intelligent than I had anticipated. And then it totally blew into a high-octane action movie parody which hit every note and every satire, and tied all the self-references. Quite brilliant.
An outsider finding out that an entire village is insane/mad- that plot is a cliche of popular novels/movies, isn't it? What is it?
This is the most boring action movie I've ever seen. I can't finish it. I fell asleep once already and on try two all I can think about is: "Why did they make this terrible movie? Is Bruce Willis this desperate for money?"

I have to agree with Jeremy Jahns in his World War Z review. If you watch zombie movies or The Walking Dead, it's really awkward to watch World War Z. The problem is that being rated PG-13 means they show almost no gore at all. I mean... you don't need to show someone's severed hand, but it's just awkward to see them avoid showing any zombie-smashing goodness! I thought it was interesting, and I was kind of amused at how often people laughed at the silly zombies. How many silly, teeth-clattering scenes were there in that movie?
I don't think the issue was so much with Amy Adams as Lois, but rather that the lines weren't all that great. One thing I thought was awkward was some of the crude language. When I went to see it, I saw parents walking in with kids wearing Superman t-shirts, so I assume they were going to see Man of Steel. I'm sure the parents loved explaining to their kids why people kept talking about dicks ("dick wipe", "stop measuring our dicks", etc.).

Sure, Justin Long was kind of annoying in Live Free or Die Hard (interesting note: that character was supposed to be McClane's son), but the rest of it was fine. You had the "stone age cop" using his tried-and-true methods to take out the super tech wiz. It's kind of like Die Hard 3 but with a higher focus on technology (and some of it a bit far-fetched).

War Z - 9/10 - I really thought that it would suck after watching the previews. But it was defiantly one of the better movies I've seen in theaters lately.

If you think 4 was anything like 3, you really ought to watch 3 again. 4 was like a Saturday morning cartoon version of the Die Hard series. Also, "a bit far-fetched"? It was so far-fetched that Penny Arcade summarised it like this:

Pitch Perfect - 8/10 - I honestly would have never thought I would watch this movie let alone like it, but the wife picked it out and it turned out to be quite the entertaining movie/parody of a musical and american idol type contests.

She didn't look the part to me. She was a little too girl next door. They didnt do themselves any favors with her dialog, but when I saw her I didnt think Lois Lane. She would have been better as Lana Lang.
I mean that Live Free or Die Hard takes place in an open world unlike Die Hard (Nakatomo Tower) or Die Hard 2 (an airport). It also has similar plot points as Die Hard with a Vengeance where McClane is chasing after a guy who thinks he's going to outwit McClane. The only difference is that Die Hard 4 has significantly more travel as almost all of Die Hard 3 takes place in New York City (the end is in upstate New York).
What made me really dislike Die Hard 5 was the villain that you don't really care about. Hell, he's really only shown in the beginning and then you fight his lackey the whole time. Also, the biggest grievance that I have is that John McClane Sr. feels like an extra in half the scenes because his son kept getting a ton of the limelight. I think Die Hard 3 and 4 did it well by having the partner contribute, but they didn't feel too overbearing. The movies are about John McClane overcoming some jackass bad guy through his usual brutish ways.

I think it's one of those things where if you hear about it beforehand, you'll end up focusing on it the entire time.
Although, I'm not sure if you classifying it as an action-thriller is really a good excuse. Plenty of action movies have gore in them, and I do think there's a difference between excessive and just the right amount. I don't think we need to see zombies devouring people (
the script actually made sure of that since the zombies weren't really trying to feed but rather infect
), but usually people taking out zombies is a bit grittier with you seeing them being taken out.
I think I've just seen far too many zombie movies that don't mind being a little gruesome.
Goyer has kind of been a mixed bag when it comes to writing. He wrote the Nolan Batman trilogy as well as DaVinci's Demons, which have mostly been pretty good. However, he's also written the Ghost Rider movies, which... well, I don't think we need to talk about those.

I don't disagree with that. At least from what I can recall, Lois has always been quite the looker in most incarnations. I'm pretty much used to Terri Hatcher from Lois and Clark as that was on TV while I was growing up.
Thinking about it... what about Lois from Smallville? Amy Adams' Lois is kinda like her. Although, I'd take the one from Smallville over Amy Adams any day! :wub:
