Atlantic Rim - 5/10: Mark this in the so bad it's not bad category. Yes, this is just what it looks like. Asylum's ripoff title of Pacific Rim. The plot is almost exactly the same, the acting and dialogue is laughable, but the CGI isn't bad at all for a low budget movie. It's better than most Syfy movies, and definitely not the worst DVD movie I've seen. It got bonus points for monsters and giant robots.

To the Wonder - 7/10
Terrance Malick's latest work.
I absolutely loved Tree of Life.
It was a beautiful story.
To the Wonder didn't quite captivate me the same way.
Olga Kurylenko is beautiful.
The many landscapes filmed were beautiful.
But the story itself felt lacking, and i had a hard time connecting with the characters in any way, as they didn't feel all that real to me.

The Place Beyond the Pines - 7/10
A rather interesting movie that spans many, many years.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters - 6/10
Fun to watch, with lots of groan-worthy jokes. Bad in every other way.
Gemma Arterton <3

Fast & Furious 6 - 7/10
Everything i expected and more. Great fun, with physics-defying action...

This Is the End - 7/10
Lots of laughs and silliness.

World War Z - 8/10
Really enjoyed this movie.
Solid edge-of-your-seat thriller that kept up the pace all movie long.
Segen (played by Daniella Kertesz) was such a great bad-ass character in this one!

WwZ > TM's new flick?

I have some friends in Edmonton, (and enemies), what do you do there?

Yeah i really enjoyed WWZ.
To the Wonder was a good, but not really great IMHO, which was a bit disappointing (albeit expected) after how much i liked Tree of Life.

Odd Thomas - 8/10 - Very well done adaptation of the Dean Koontz book by the same name about a guy with powers to see the dead. While you can spot various aspects of Koontz writing, it doesn't follow the same plot devices that many of his books use. The only real negative thing I have to say about it is that one thing I've noticed in book to movie translations is the dialogue. Sometimes, things characters say to each other sound completely unnatural and cheesy when you hear them said out loud vs reading them. I've noticed this a lot with Stephen King based movies as well.

It does have some similarities to Dead Like Me as well. If you liked that or are a fan of Koontz work, I highly recommend this.

The Shining - 8.5/10: My god, Kubrick knows how to make a goddamn beautiful movie. Some amazingly iconic and just legendary shots in this. Found the acting kind of weak, however - awesome at the end, but the first half just seems awkward and too "phony". Also, really wasn't that scary but doesn't mean it wasn't good. Nicholson's best work ever for sure.

Full Metal Jacket - 8.75/10: Second best Vietnam movie after Apocalypse Now IMO. Again, stunning camera work. The "two small movies" format kind of leaves the film without a whole lot of story so to speak. Boot camp Sergeant is just perfect for his role. Second half lacks much substance, and just seems like a collection of little stories, with the sniper scene providing the only real substance. But still quite gripping!

R. Lee Ermey is awesome. I remember reading somewhere that most of his dialogue was purely improv and not scripted. He just yelled what he wanted and had learned through his own military background.

Man of Steel: 6/10

Opening sequence is a solid 9/10. Really awesome. However the movie really falls flat in the middle. There's probably like 40 minutes of 1960's style punching with a lot of glass breaking. I was expecting a Pow Bam Pow bubble anytime. It's actually kinda boring watching the same stupid special effects over and over again. There's also some really lame logic in the movie. Face palm stupid in fact. I'd say this movie had everything, and I mean everything, going for it, but the script or director is lame. They had great acting, unbelievable CG, an awesome cast, but they really lose it when they have scenes like
the father dying in the most stupid way possible, the last battle scene which was completely unnecessary, and brilliant things like them dragging the world maker across the galaxy for no good reason just to wipe out humanity
. All in all it's very worth seeing for the special affects and the opening sequence but you can pretty much leave the theater at the halfway point and not miss anything.

man on fire - 5/5

had seen it before but had been a while. i forgot a lot about the movie but it was just as badass as i had remembered it. still was hoping the end would be different

side note, the soundtrack in the movie seems to have the bass way higher than most movies. sometimes the bass sounded bad.

My wife has been and likes it. I haven't really sat down and paid attention to it, but she says it's like a better version of The Following.

thanks man. I watched 2 episodes last night. It's not bad, still rather slow, but I'm sure it's building to something

The Half in the Bag guys over at red letter media really didn't care for Man of Steel.

The Last Stand 5/10
It ain't no Commando.

American Mary 4/10
Med school student drops out to perform extreme body mods. Only thing going for this movie is it does have some hot chicks in it. I atleast expected some good gore but nothing really special there.

Beautiful Creatures 3/10
I really need to start paying more attention to the crap I put in my Netflix queue. This is another Twilight style of movie only with a female witch and a human male. 2 hours of nothing happening other than horrible southern stereotypes.

thats basically true. pretty sure he was not originally cast for the part, he was an advisor and didnt like the dude they had cast and sent Kubrick a 40 min tape of him just yelling random insults and got the part

THE HEAT 10/10

Effing hilarious, there wasn't a single moment in the movie that wasn't funny. Soundtrack was a little wack since it featured Kreayshawn and Honey Cocaine...but, I'll let that go.

Man of Steel -- 7/10

I liked the way they were able to add angst to Clark Kent / Kal-El without making it completely ridiculous. The pacing in the last half hour wasn't good just non-stop action which at least looked good thanks to modern CGI and special effects but having to fight hentai tentacles coming out of the world engine? A bit much imo.

Superman having to dig deep to overcome the krypton like environment around the world engine in order to stop it would've been enough.

The direction was good, until the last half hour. I may have gave it an extra point because of Antje Traue as Farao-Ul. I first saw her in Pandorum which was a pretty decent sci-fi horror-esque movie.

Drive -- 8.5/10

Even though there isn't as much action as the trailer suggested I liked the pacing. All the quiet moments in the film just gave the moments of extreme violence even more impact.

The acting and directing in my opinion were top notch. Especially Albert Brooks who as far as I know has never played a murderous sociopath. He was cast very well against type.

Saw World War Z and have to give it two sort of reviews

First off

As a movie - 7.5/10
Pretty good acting, constant action. Different sort of look at zombies. Was exciting all the way through. Can read most of the other reviews for the idea.

As a book to movie..movie 3/10.
Having read the book, it was pretty sad. Its like the writers read the book then picked "themes" they wanted to explore in a movie. More along the lines of hey we stole some ideas from the book and completely changed the story but kept the name.

Still i enjoyed it. But you have to go into it realizing itll be nothing like the book at all

Man of Steel 7.5/10

Loved the modernization of the character, and the "he doesn't know how strong he can be so he's afraid to unleash" feeling that they brought over from the comics.

The battle scene at the end was way too long. I'm thinking they spent 30 million on CGI and decided "this is too expensive to cut!" Also, I'm guessing that General Zod was so pissed off because they encased him and his crew into a giant dildo and flew him off into space. Seriously...who thought of that punishment?

Anyway, other then the length and the need of some editing, it was a solid movie.

No kidding.

I think the only Zack Snyder movie I've seen is 300, and I've always thought it was over-rated. The Frank Miller material shines through and it's definitely worth watching, but people think of it way too highly. It could have been MUCH better in the hands of a better director.

I'll probably watch Man of Steel, but I can tell that I'm way too cynical to enjoy it.

Dead End 5.5/10
Decent little simple horror movie in a Twilight Zone kind of way. A family otw to visit people on x-mas decide to take a back road. The road goes nowhere kind of mobius strip like and they are slowly killed off by something. Not much gore but creepy. Netflix streaming.

Olympus Has Fallen - 7/10 Its one of those "it is what it is" kinda movies. No real surprises, except for maybe the number of recognizable actors playing small parts. If you dont question it too much its watchable.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters - 6/10 Its not very good, but just when you are about to turn it off you see Gretel's butt in her tight leather pants, a witches boob, or something visually interesting. I guess its similar to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. A bunch of cool looking things almost randomly edited together. Aside from a nude scene, you can get the same experience by just watching the trailer. I would rate it lower, but I did watch it all and smiled once or twice. The director looks to have been influenced by the Evil Dead movies...maybe watch one of those instead.

Super Hybrid 5/10: Didn't check, but has all the quality of a SyFy movie, so I assume it was. A killer car is impounded in a multilevel parking lot/impound yard. Then it proceeds to kill off the employees.

Acting was decent, Story was weak, plot was predictable. If there is absolutely nothing else to watch, it'll pass the time, but no one will miss anything by missing this. Watch Stephen King's Christine instead, if you can.
