I'm somewhat disappointed with the poor ratings this movie is getting. I was really hoping that it would be worthwhile, but I'm tempted to not even waste my money now. :\ I heard that they spend way too much time with Riddick at the beginning just doing "training." Also, I get the feeling that these movies would be better with far bigger budgets. One complaint that I heard about Riddick is that the CG is pretty awful at places. After watching Pitch Black again, I was hoping that the CG would be a lot better as the monsters in Pitch Black look like they're from a PlayStation video game pre-rendered cinematic.
This also ended up being a pretty big disappointment for me, and I think it's the same problem as above: budget. I heard that the budget for Kick-Ass 2 was actually
lower than the original, but the scope is definitely much larger. I heard a story from the director about how when Jim Carrey came in, he
really wanted to get into character with prosthetics and stuff, but the budget just simply wouldn't allow it. So, Jim Carrey paid for it himself!
The soundtrack from M83 is epic - that word gets overused nowadays, but the breadth of emotion in the score deserves that description. I particularly like
Track 2 - "waking up". It sets your pulse pounding and is a perfect match for the slow build emotional barrage of the movie.
I had a guy at work pretty much extol this movie, and as he put it, "I normally don't like Tom Cruise -- just haven't liked him since Risky Business -- but I really liked this movie!" When it released in theaters, I was hesitant to see it because of the poor reviews, and I was still hesitant when it came out. However, I figured that I would give it a shot with such a glowing review.
I don't think I liked it as much as him, as I'd probably give it a 7/10, but it was definitely not deserving of the poor reviews it got at release. Now, I quoted that specific part of your post, because this is what I told the guy at work, "I thought it was good overall, and I thought the music was better than the acting which was better than the story." Man, I
loved the music in the movie, and I was finally glad to see a movie that doesn't screw up its music. Far too often, movies are willing to drop the volume so far on the music that you barely hear it. In scenes with a lot of action or very little dialog, let us hear the wonderful tunes! Some of my favorite movie soundtracks are also some of the ones with the loudest soundtracks. Some examples are movies like Inception, Pacific Rim, etc.
I watched Olympus has Fallen last night...Typical good guys US battling the bad N\Korea and I have to say I felt angst against the baddies too...LOL. I really like Morgan Freeman, and the movies was quite good, if not that believeable....all action and good with it..
My only complaint here is that I thought the script could have been tighter with some of the witty quips. I mean... it felt like a Die Hard movie, but without the epic script. It was definitely better than A Good Day to Die Hard!
EDIT:
3) Alien has same DNA as us, so why is he bigger and stronger and pale?
It doesn't have the same DNA. Our DNA was based off of theirs.
4) First thing alien does when he wakes up is go on a rampage; WTF???
Because they were trying to exterminate us with the Xenomorphs.
