Monuments Men - 6/10

Good story and concept but a little disjointed and poorly edited. Great ensemble cast but rarely do they come together and dialogue is somehow very limited from each; no one is allowed to shine except for Clooney (surprise! but does he ever shine or is he just...Clooney?) We aren't able to really delve into their characters much so
when two of them die
there isn't that much empathy. I found myself looking at the watch a few times. Should have been longer in some ways (character development) and shorter in others (a lot fluff and filler).

Gravity 8.5/10 - So first I should put out there I've been looking forward to seeing this since I saw the first trailer for it. I was really glad to see it had high ratings on RT as well, and finally got around to watching it tonight. So without giving much away I thought it was a pretty well done film. Are there flaws? Yeah, namely Clooney's character is a freaking idiot. Repeatedly. But, once you make it through some of the stupid parts (stupid in so far as irrational/illogical) in the first half hour it was very enjoyable. Definitely would say it's worth a watch if you want an action style movie without guns, excessive gore, or lots of profanity. In other words could be watched with family if you have older kids, and also didn't need that stuff to try and make the movie good. It stood on its own merits. Below are some more in depth comments that include potential spoilers.

First off, Clooney's character wouldn't have been freely circling the shuttle. I get why they did it, but it broke the suspension of disbelief. Next, NASA would have been tracking the debris as they did in the movie, but it's unlikely that it would have hit them so quickly (but I can put aside my disbelief on that one since it's a movie and potentially the Russian missile deal could have hit something close). However, they were all pretty careless about the situation when NASA told them to GTFO. The minor astronaut who is playing around by the airlock through the whole start is also an idiot. You get inside the airlock. Period. Now once Bullock's character's detached from the shuttle, it's doubtful a real astronaut would have attempted a rescue. However, this is a movie so fine have Clooney go get her. But he wouldn't have intentionally hit her with the force he did as that A) means more fuel is spent to brake and reverse direction but B) that you could catch something and rip one of the suits. Space is about minor adjustments and controlled movements. Which gets to the biggest issue I had. That was when they get to the ISS Clooney just does this massive course correction right next to the station. If he had done small adjustments starting further away he wouldn't have had to do that. And subsequently wouldn't have died from them being out of control. Oh and yes, I read the ArsTechnica article about the movie (and the one about the Columbia rescue mission) where they talk about how the ISS and shuttles were not on the same plane and couldn't reach one another in real missions. But I knew that going in, and accepted that wasn't realistic. For that matter the Chinese having another station roughly the size of the ISS is also not realistic. But I digress on those two points.

So the main issue I had through most of the movie was the total disregard for fuel, the affect minor adjustments have in space, and the recklessness/stupidity of characters. Ironically Bullock's character I had the least amount of issues with that.

It's a movie. I get that. I get that if the issues I had with it hadn't been there it would have been a slower moving plot that didn't build suspense and would have bored many people. But I enjoyed it. I wish I had seen it in IMAX though.

Riddick 6/10

A payday movie for Vin Diesel. Since he produced it, they didn't follow the previous film's heavy CG/Star Wars feel, and instead the super badass of the galaxy felt safe with the Necros and got blindsided... okay. Then he seemed to be wherever on the planet he wanted (always on top of something, because apparently mercs don't look up)... reminds me of the new Red Dawn, where the resistance fighters 'appeared' within the heavily controlled city, with nary a mention of how they got there.

Nebraska- 2/10. Very, very slow and boring. Lame acting. Avoid this turd

I haven't watched it, so I can't comment on the movie, but it's been nominated for best lead actor and best supporting actress. I'd hardly call that lame acting, unless the Academy, Golden Globes, and SAG awards have redefined the word "best"

Unrelated, I might have to see Ender's Game. Seems to be getting semi-decent recommendations in this thread. I've been avoiding it because Harrison Ford.

watching gravity 3d bluray tonight in my ht ... looking forward to it!

In case you missed the other times it was said, lower your expectations if you're not watching IMAX 3D. We urged you to watch it in the theater while you still could.

I think even a nice home theater isn't really good enough to get the experience and you might just say: "What was the big deal with this movie?"

while i know it's not the same as an imax floor to ceiling setup, i know it will be awesome in my setup, as every movie i've ever watched in my basement is a better experience than watching it in the theater.

haven't been to a theater since iron man 3 and don't plan on going any time soon heh.

Out of curiousity, what is your setup? Feel free to PM if it doesn't belong in this thread, I just like to see other people's expensive stuff

maybe 1/2 of first book? Second half and it is not exactly faithful to it.

I don't know. I'd say the movie covered Ender's part of the first book glossing over a lot but covered it. It just left out everything his sister and brother did.

Interesting you would call it a "payday movie" for Vin Diesel, when it is, in fact, the most non-"payday movie" you could possibly imagine. From the film's wiki page:

"Since they did not have enough money to shoot the film in its entirety, Diesel had to mortgage his house, obtain loans and spend most of his personal money on the production of the film, "I had to leverage my house," Diesel said. "If we didn't finish the film, I would be homeless.""

I love the first one and this one is that on cocaine. That is kind of the problem though. It is a little too ridiculous. Still a fun to watch and still has a lot of sexy ladies.

made comments on Nightwatch and Daywatch. no love for these movies? Did anyone else see them? No one knows about them?

I started reading the book. Interesting start to the book with an immediate difference.

Pontifex really likes them. I'm not much of a fan of the films (I found them pretty clunky), but I bet the books could be pretty good if they were written well.

gravity - 10/10

i 100% think this movie lived up to the hype. this movie had me on the edge of my seat pretty much the entire movie. there were a bunch of things i loved about this movie that won't really spoil anything for anyone.

the movie starts out with a "continuous shot" that is simply awesome with breath taking effects. the whole movie i was literally almost grabbing onto my seat. it is basically a visual bust-a-nut from the get go, and it stays the entire movie. then they had a bunch of these styles of shots the entire flick which were so extremely well done. and to top it off, the 3d effects definitely rival those of avatar. the visuals are simply breath taking in this movie.

then you have the sound. the sound in this movie is incredible. from the very beginning, when they are in space talking to houston, and all sounds from houston come from the l/r speakers, it feels as though you are hearing it in your headseats with the rest of the astronauts. then during the movie, they have a couple different scenes where the camera pans from outside of the helmets to inside the helmets, and the transition in the sound is simply awesome. and on top of that, you have teh whole musical score. i won't spoil anytihng, but at the very end of the movie, the music with what happens gave me goose bumps. then the bass in this movie isn't just the bass from boomy explosions, it has bass at the perfect times when you should actually feel it, and you feel it more than hearing it due to the frequencies at many parts in this movie. simply perfect.

and on top of all of this, i felt like the movie was 30 minutes long. it flew by. the entire time i was pretty much on edge and there were multiple times i felt myself clasping onto my seat that i had to ease up a bit. that doesn't happen very often but with this movie it happened quite a bit.

this movie lived up to the hype 100% to me. my brother asked me last weekend if he could come watch it at my house when i got it, but i only have 2 pairs of 3d glasses so i told him that i was gonna watch it with my wife. but after it was over i immediately told him whenever he wants to come watch it i will watch it a second time with him.

there was 1 part in the movie that i started to face palm, because i thought it was 100% bs, and i even told my wife how disappointed i was with that shit happening, but then about 2 minutes later all was good and i felt relieved. if you've seen the movie i'm pretty sure you know what part i'm talking about.

Jobs - 4/10

Not a terrible movie but the fact that they had so much to work with to only come up with a rather bland movie let me down. The movie continues to try some sort of "artsy" direction that did not work while leaving out HUGE parts in Steve Job's past. The fact that I kept thinking how much better the 1997 made for TV movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley" was should be a clue.

I generally agree with critics more often than not, but this movie offered nothing, nothing at all. 2 long hrs of boring characters and a horrible plot. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean.

Oh come on...everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but 2/10...yeah i think we all know it's not that bad.

I think i watched one of them or both way back around shortly after they came out?
I don't remember them well, but i'll maybe see if i can rewatch sometime.

Yeah the first one was great.
They kinda went too far on the second one, but it was still fun (though a lot worse than the first). Third one will probably be much worse
