Captain Phillips -- 9/10

Awesome flick, absolutely loved it. I do think it ran on a little long -- specifically
when they're in the lifeboat for so long, and then the 5-6 times it was "1 green 2 red" and what not
-- but overall, I thought it was great. Very intense.

Robocop 2014 - 1/10

Holy crap was this horseshit. Who greenlighted this turd? Was so boring. The CGI was retarded. The music was bad. The script was terrible. We should have just turned this off. Giving 1/10 since it's better than Battlefield Earth.

20 Feet from Stardom - 10/10

WOW! I watch a ton of movies but almost never feel a desire to review them. This one just blew my mind.

This is a documentary about background singers active in the last 50 years or so. Several of the most important ones are interviewed and profiled, and they also include interview segments with Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Stevie Wonder among others. The whole thing is absolutely packed with electrifying musical moments (some you know, some you don't) and awesome archival footage. The movie is moving and stirring and just amazing overall. By far my favorite film this year.
Thank you Don. Will watch it

Bad Grandpa .5 - 8/10 (Netflix)

Of course, it's lewd / vulgar. There are some hilarious scenarios they couldn't put in the actual movie because they went with the story format and these didn't fit the narrative.

19:30 for absolute gross-out hilarity.

Yeah that movie sucked. Even Robocop 3 was better than this turd.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla 7.5/10
Note that is against other Godzilla movies . Probably a 6 on the normal movie scale. Anyway some how I overlooked this one probably thinking it was one other Mechagodzilla movies I have seen. Lot of fun if you like these things and it is on Crackle for free.

Heavy Metal (1981)
6/10

It's basically just a bunch of short animated stories very loosely connected. Some were enjoyable and some were very boring. Good soundtrack but the animation wasn't that great even compared to other animated movies of that age. I'm definitely glad I watched it as there are still movies and shows to this day that reference it and the amount of women that have pointless sex in it is hilarious as well.

The leftovers - 7/10 (so far)

As some have mentioned the pacing is a little slow but it definitely has a "LOST" feel about it. I heard rumors that something big is supposed to go down in episode 4.

HBO needs this series big time with most of their other series ending this year. I like it so far.....

I love that movie but I saw it way back in the 80s when I was around 10 and animated boobs, gore, and swearing was amazing to me lol.

Homefront 5.5/10
Jason Statham in a movie that has been done many many times. It is your standard ex-cop moves with his daughter to the sticks to have a nice safe life only to imediatly piss off the local bad ass. Lots of punching, shooting, and explosions follow. Not horrible but nothing good either. Neflix streaming.

I saw the Sharknado Rifftrax Live Thursday in theaters.

It was probably one of the funniest things I had ever seen. I laughed so hard and I just simply can't remember the last time I had as much fun in a theater. 10/10!

They're having another showing July 15th, I highly recommend taking the time to watch it.

300: Rise of an Empire - 5/10. Pales in comparison to 300. Weak lead.

Lone Survivor - 10/10. Probably the best film I've seen this year.

The Machine - 6.5/10. Good acting with a so-so plot.

Mortal Instruments - City of Bones - 1/10. This movie was bad from start to finish. I'm surprised I made it to the end.

Nymphomaniac Vol 1&2 - 8/10. Good story and acting. It didn't need the sex scenes to be good.

Looks interesting. Do you think it matters if you've seen Sharknado before seeing this? (I haven't.)

J Depp's Transcendence was much better than I was lead to believe. I give 8 of 10. Scott Wilkinson of AVS forums and Home Theater geeks recommended and I concur.

A Map for Saturday -- 9/10
Documentary about extended solo travel on a budget. This follows a guy through his travels for nearly a year, and has brief interviews with people he met along the way. There was plenty of variety in the environments and places he went -- very cool, really enjoyed it. I'd like to find more documentaries like this.

Tiny: A Story About Living Small -- 4/10
(Netflix Instant) Minimalist / small living somewhat appeals to me ... but not on the scale of these tiny houses. This was a "documentary" about a kid building a tiny house for some property he bought. Really, it was a build-log more than anything. There's really no "so what's it like living tiny?" or anything, so it was very forgettable.

Inequality for All -- 8/10
(Netflix Instant) Documentary about wealth inequality in the United States. Takes a somewhat interesting approach in that the argument isn't that wealth inequality is bad, as wealth is what drives people to work harder and become better at what they do and stuff -- but rather that the wealth gap has widened so dramatically over the past 30 years due to the middle class not receiving wage increases to mirror the massive increases in productivity that have happened since the late 70s.

Did have some good historical charts and stuff, and I thought it was very well put together. Definitely a liberal bias, but I didn't think it came across too strongly.

Years of Living Dangerously (Showtime Series) -- 6.5/10
...but I'm only 2 episodes in. First off, let me say I would rate this higher but for the HORRIBLE transitions. You know those Powerpoint transitions you thought were cool in the 6th grade? Get ready to see a lot of them. I couldn't believe it. With the names attached to this thing, you would think at least one of them knew a good transition guy ... not to mention every cut is preceded by either "and that's where I'm headed" or some sort of rhetorical question.

ANYWAY! So far it's talked about climate change and part of what causes it (deforestation in Indonesia so they can plant palm trees for palm oil) and some of the effects that are already being seen (drought in Texas, drought in Syria that led to the civil war, extended fire season in the western US with more intense and larger-scale fires than ever before).

Human Planet -- 10/10
...but only 1 episode in, so I definitely might be jumping the gun. The first episode was about how humans interact with the ocean. It was a neat insight into how other parts of the world live, and some of the things they must do to survive. The whale-hunting scene was really cool to watch (it was just 1 whale for a whole village to live off of for a few months, relax!) -- I can't imagine trying to take one down with those rickety boats and nothing more than a giant hand-carved spear.

Anyway, I really like shows like this. Can't wait to finish this one.

Battle: Los Angeles -- 7/10
Yes I know this is truly a terrible movie, but my expectations were incredibly low as I was only watching it as a "bass demo" for the dual SVS PB12's I got last month. As an action flick, it wasn't too bad -- I looked at it as purely an action flick so that's why it's got a 7/10 rating. Sound effects were great, and the bass really was awesome due to all the explosions in the background. The alien guns sounded great, and there's some explosions near the end (1:54:something if I remember right) that shook the house. The room my subs are in is only 13x14x8, so ... overkill doesn't quite cover it.

EDIT: Also wanted to note that the current season of Suits (USA network, season 3) is pretty lame. Loved the first two seasons, previously gave the show a 9/10. The current season is more like a 5/10 show. Holding out hope that they realize it's starting to suck and reverse course, but if the next "half-season" segment isn't any better, I'm not sure I'll come back for season 4.

Sabotage - 6/10

I'm a huge David Ayer fan (Harsh Times & End of Watch being two of my favorite movies) but this movie isn't quite up to par. My expectations were pretty low going into it so I can't say that I was disappointed. On the contrary, for a cornball zero-thought action flick, it wasn't half bad. It managed to keep me engaged despite the fact that I watched it at 2AM. The grittiness and the gore were pretty fun.

What it lacked was all of the emotion that I found in Harsh Times or End of Watch. The performances were pretty two dimensional and completely forgettable.

If you like guns, blood, drugs and bad language though, it might be worth your 90 minutes.

Dear Mr. Watterson 7/10 (Netflix)

Documentary about the reclusive Bill Watterson, and people's love for the "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip.

Mildly interesting, but it doesn't culminate with an interview or anything. Watterson really is elusive. They do a whole documentary about him and his comic and can't get a single statement comment or statement.

Then this happened just after the documentary was made.

Appleseed Alpha (2014) Animation, Action, Sci-fi. 93 minutes. 7/10.
Based on the comic book by the creator of Ghost in the Shell, a young female soldier Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos survive through the post World War 3 apocalyptic New York in search of human's future hope, the legendary city of Olympus.
Interesting story line. Almost realistic movement of the characters. Video game like graphics.

Some screen shots.

Im actually enjoying it more than last season. Its a nice change. Instead of the hiding Mike and making lies its more of a honest battle. Something different than the previous three seasons.

Boys of Abu Ghraib - 5.5/10. Had a lot of potential but ended up as a let down. Was a bit all over the place as well. It felt more like a made for tv movie than a film. Story wise there was things i think they should have expanded into such as no electrotype, boredom, ect and its effects on the main character. Instead they mention it in a voice over and that is it. I did like the ending though
how Farmer saw the pictures and could actually see and reflect on what he had done. Its on thing to live in the moment but the end showed him realizing what he had truly become and done
Is it worth watching? If you have nothing else then yeah. but i wouldnt go out of my way to see it

I found it boring and basically a CGIer rip off of lawnmower man. I wanted to like it, and did like some things about it, but overall it was just lacking.

6/10

From the references here we watched 20 Feet From Stardom last night. Very interesting. 9/10
