Finally got around to watching the Wire. First season was great. Into the second now am an not as enthralled with the story, but I still feel as if it's all connected or a part of the whole story if not directly related.

Season 3 gets back to it

until season 4

stick with it

The Nice Guys - 6.5/10

Enjoyable, mostly fun movie. I liked both Crowe and Gosling in the lead roles, but Angourie Rice as the 15-ish daughter of Gosling totally stole the movie. Couldn't help watch Crowe and get the feeling that I was watching John Goodman, though.

A comedy/mystery/action-adventure movie, the action scenes and the death and mayhem seemed a bit out of place. Maybe they were just trying too hard, or maybe there was a bit of inadvisable last minute editing to punch it up some. Should have been more lighthearted and it would have better hit the mark, IMO. Loved the period setting of 1977.

Season 2 of The Wire is an outlier season.

Was season 2 the season where they were mostly on the docks with the Greeks? If so, I agree.

To me,the Wire was very hit and miss. I thought it strayed from the more interesting themes, plus it repeated many of the same little dramas over and over again.

Meh. A little too twee and very predictable if you've seen a few of these indie flicks. Too many easy wins.

I thought Viggo was good, but he's always good. I just rolled my eyes at a lot of the the quirky parts and the attempts at humour and emotion. A bit too long too. I'd say a 5/10 for me.

KT
5/10 really? The acting was 10/10 for Koreon standards imo. Everything was crisp and filled with emotions. Train of Busan beats all american zombie flicks by a huge distance!

Bad News Bears (1976) - 10/10

Actually went to the theater last night to watch this in 35mm. It was a 40th Anniversary screening hosted by Dan Epstein (70's baseball writer/historian/super-nerd) and held at the historic Musicbox theater in Chicago. So the ambiance was just right to say the least.

Regardless, this is just one of the greatest if not THE greatest baseball movies of all time. Sure it's not the greatest of writing or acting or general quality, but the story and setting is just beyond perfect for those of us that grew up in/around that era. The kids are just phenomenal and you either knew one kid like each of the characters or you were one of them yourself. Not to mention, being 1976 there are things said/done in the movie that would just not fly at all anymore.

Jason Bourne 5.5 or 6/10.

I loved the original three, with the third one throwing me for a loop because of the shitty/shaky camera work. I honestly feel like it was extremely distracting and made it hard to focus on what was going on.

This movie had the same camera work but actually seemed worse. There were times where I couldn't tell wtf was going on during fights because the camera was shaking around so much during the insanely fast fights. I still can't figure out wtf happened during the last fight scene of the movie...I just heard a punch noise and someone was getting strangled.

Disappointing to say the least.

Suicide Squad - 8.5/10

I really lliked this movie. The Enchantress was especially well done, especially the sequence near the end. The betrayal/counter-betrayal aspect was interesting and not cliche. The action was great. And the sound track is something worth listening to on its own.
im waiting for the directors cut

A lot of people think of The Wire as a cop and robber thriller kind of show - cop and drug dealers to be precise. If you take it that way, then Season 2 is not part of the overall story.

But The Wire is really a social commentary, on the way things are in the society, why so much of that is inevitable. About human nature as well. It is so much deeper than your typical TV show. So in my opinion, the second season definitely is very much part of the whole show.

Season 2 of The Wire was McNulty's best season for me. He's at his lowest and does exactly what he does best with it. I was sad about his lack of presence in the last couple seasons.

I agree, the 3rd Bourne movie had a bad problem with too much shaky cam and you can blame its director Paul Greengrass for this ill-conceived tactic. I like the series, will see the latest when my local library gets it. Figure I will likewise curse the shaky cam. That tactic works when it's subtle sometimes, but it works best when you are unaware of it, when you don't think about it. When it starts to make you dizzy or confused, or worse, pissed-off, that's when it's egregious.

OT, but I gotta ask -- are people getting email notifications from Anandtech Forums since the changeover a few days ago? I haven't been getting any! Also, has anyone been able to upload an avatar image? I've tried everything, JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF, all mannger of pixel densities, I can select from my machine/network, hit OK and it simply doesn't work. Doesn't get the file, evidently.

I'm about half way through and it's not that it isn't well done, it's just not interesting or relatable. I'm not Polish, don't know any dock workers, am not in a union, and don't have a job endangered of being phased out by robots (yet). The first season was a lot similar to how I grew up: rampant poverty and organized crime. I will stick with it though. I think everyone is doing a good job in their characters.

You need to resubscribe to threads if you want email notifications. You can also just check the notifications area near your avatar on the top right when you are here. Though that only updates you on subscribed threads and when people quote your post.

Meant to also state that my eyes were tired after the film.

My wife and I went out for dinner and when I was reading the menu I noticed that my eyes felt fatigued like if I had sat in the theater with my eyes crossed for too long. Shaky cam + fast action + scenes where you're supposed to quickly read text on phones does not work for me.

So I have to manually resubscribe to all my previously subscribed threads one at a time???

Even threads I started?

I saw 'Bad Moms' with my wife recently. I thought it was decent. Some pretty good laughs in it and even a little touching at the end.

The bolded is the problem with comedies now a days. They just don't make funny movies to be funny through out anymore, they always have to try and have a lesson or serious moment at the end of the movie.

I'm 1/2 way through Stranger Things - good show so far.

Zoolander 2 - 4/10

So the end was terrible, but it did have some funny lines. Obviously not as good as the 1st one.

For whatever reason my wife wife and I have gone back and started watching Sex and the City from the beginning. This show first aired in '98 and my wife and I were just turning 20 years old at the time it was released. We were just barely married and in our mid 20's when it came to an end.

20 years later, it's probably even more interesting and entertaining than when we first watched it. Knocking on the door of 40 and being right in the age of the characters it just hits home a lot more and is still entirely relevant. It's funny how going back and watching something two decades later makes a show seem entirely different.

A "current" show that is very similar in nature but more "millennial" at heart is on Netflix. It's called Master of None and is done by Aziz Azaria. It's an incredibly intelligent comedy that hits on some many different levels. There's an incredible amount of heart and soul to the series and each episode hits at a different part of relationships and humanity. A very good watch without being preachy about gender, culture or diversity.

Hunt For the Wilderpeople - 9/10
The kid is hilarious and has a huge personality. Breakthrough performance here, also very well directed. Luckily got to see this in the theater. I'd check it out if it's playing in yours.
Stranger Things - 8.5/10
Clearly pays homage to 80's movies like E.T. and Poltergeist. Loved it despite a major plot hole.
Nancy and the Jonathan don't tell Jonathon's mom and the police chief about the portal in the woods so they are forced to go into the DOE building to make a deal with the gov.
