I just got a ticket to see this accompanied by the wordless music orchestra. looking forward to it
That sounds awesome. I've seen films with live accompaniment a couple of times; always been a cool experience.

I want to see this movie so freaking bad!

Seeing Metropolis was my only experience with it, that was an original score and I still couldn't stay awake. But this one I'm excited for, I've missed the last few films they've done (moonlight, especially). They will be playing Jonny's actual score, which is supposed to be really great.

It is a richness to live in or near an area where there is a critical mass sufficient to sustain and support, for want of a better term, "culture." I live on the border of the semi-boonies, even as farms are sold and developments rise up all around me, but there is a history of artistic excellence and appreciation in this part of Bucks County going back decades and decades that endures and prevails such that I don't even have to make the hour trip into Philly to enjoy it . . . although Philly is the cherry on top, hosting a glorious, even riotous smorgasboard of "culture" for which I am grateful. Zum beispiel. Und auch.

It's definitely a privilege. No matter the obscurity of an event or film, you'll find a packed house in NYC (and probably any city with enough people)

The Snowman: ???/10

Not sure how to rate this. It is such an incoherent mess (and that is putting it mildly) it leaves you in disbelief given the cast. Guess I'd say a 2/10 but the Val Kilmer parts leave you in a state of "those parts are so bad they are good" type mindset so from a comedy perspective maybe a 3/10.

Started watching The Punisher this week and have 3 (I think, on episode 8) left and I find it very meh. It's extremely slow and boring throughout a lot of it. The Punisher was actually more interesting of a character in Dare Devil season 2 than his own show IMO. The acting is also pretty meh on a lot of the characters so that takes me out of it too. The main CIA chick my god her acting is so bad, as is the soft talking tall mark wahlberg wanna be dude. I'll finish it though but it already doesn't have me excited for a season 2 if they make one.

The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953) 10/10

Jello Biafra in an interview said this is his favorite movie. So, I watched it. If you haven't seen this you haven't lived! It amazes me that they made this in 1952. It's really timeless and works great today. I don't remember laughing so much and often watching a movie. This was made to amaze and delight. Incredible sets, costumes and casting. Very playful.

Falling Down. 10/10

Last time I saw this move was on VHS back in '93. I bought it on ebay and it arrived today. I like the way Michael Douglas' character plays a victim in society's bullshit. The compare and contrast between the cop and him is interesting.

Jean Claude Van Johnson 8/10
Intelligently written stupid show, lots of fun. The basic plot of the show is Van Damme is actually a secret agent and all his movies have been fronts for missions and he is coming back out of retirement. It is six 30min episodes on Amazon and six episodes is the right amount, anymore than that and I think the premise would start getting tired. It helps if you at least have a basic idea of who Van Damme is but you really don't need to be super familiar with his films for the joke to work.

The new Day of the Dead fared quite poorly.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/day_of_the_dead_bloodline_2018

I havent seen it. In fact I probably won't. Looks so bad I can safely skip.
Huh, haven't heard about it until. Reviews make it sound like feces though. I may watch it at some point in a couple years or so if I come across it again and am bored but otherwise, meh.

I saw Hostiles earlier this week. I'll give it 9/10 (even though I kinda dozed off, or fought against it, during the last third of the movie so I honestly don't remember much of it, sorry). Great production, story, and especially acting by Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike. I'm pissed at myself for basically missing the last part of it but I was so goddamn tired I couldn't help it. Frickin theaters all have nice reclining chairs now too in my local theater, lol.

I still wanna see "Den of Thieves" and "The Commuter" too (Moviepass ftw).

I watched Ocean's Eleven again in a loooooooooong time.

I remember as a college kid, this movie seemed so clever and fun to watch. Today, to me, the movie is an unrealistic garbage. It hasn't aged too well.

The writing of the movie is just awful. Everything is a conveniently perfect timing & their methods make ZERO sense. The writers literally played god and introduced non-sensical devices to make the plot work out.

- So you sneak into massive massive Casino server room and attach a Starburst-sized device on one of the LAN cable. Then Ocean's co. suddenly have FULL access to all security monitors? WTF. How is that 1" x 1" device transmitting 12 screens worth of data perfectly? What's powering it? How is clamping a LAN cable does anything?

- So the demolition guy haphazardly steal a giant EMP device from an university. Then he sets it off which turned off ALL electricity in Las Vegas for 30 seconds. Okay, that's straight up terrorism at federal level. People probably died from that (they showed all traffic lights go out, ALL lights). You would've been be hunted down by SWAT and all got life sentences. And how awful is this writing of having a nonsensical EMP device?

- Doesn't the casino have insurance against theft & heist?

There are tons more things I can't even remember.

This movie is dumb as hell. It's so absurd when you can choose to write anything to do anything and have everything work out within their own rules.

continuing my IMDb Top 250 Review

161. Fargo

the film that made me fall in love with the Cohen brothers; i found it amazing at the time that there was this film, that for once did not have as protagonists hollywood models perfectly coiffed even in the worst snowstorm, but rather fat and ugly short bald people that looked like normal human beings. And the story itself, being a comedy of errors, contributes to the feeling of weirdness.
Today, it's closer to Home Alone and not a film i would watch again willingly, but this was a milestone in cinema.

7.5/10 for cultural importance

162. No Country For Old Men

i genuinely do not know what this film is about. it completely puzzles me as it does not have a beginning, or an end. there is no motivation for any of teh characters, it's just a mess of in-media-res that although well made, doesn't really have a message if not WTF.

6.5/10

163. Sunrise

1927 film, never heard of it before.

no vote

164. The Thing

i have stopped this Top 250 review for so long because of how daunting i find it to review The Thing.
The Thing is an AMAZING film, it simply does EVERYTHING right, it covers every base of a great film, it has a great story (the original The Thing From Another World has almost nothing of this film), the effects still look amazing today, the acting is great, it's just awesome. If i must, it's rather limited on the "life inspiring message", but it's unmissable.

9/10

165. Andrei Rublev

1966 russian film, never heard of before.

no vote

166. Finding Nemo

i hated this film so much i could not fin-ish it. HA. HAHA. such pun.

stupid characters whose trait is "i'm an idiot", the lead is a child, who is more or less in no control over the story. And not having recognizable human facial features does not work in favour of the film, as those are what we humans use to empathize with the protagonist.
As said, i did not finish it, so no vote. Clearly a film targeted at toddlers, which is a shame, given how great animation films from Pixar can be (such as Wall-E).

Yeah, I too generally balk at the tendency of many filmmakers to deus ex machina or otherwise create meta-realities. I have a hunger, a need to see movies that are "realistic," i.e. seem like it really could have happened just as presented, no one in a million, one in ten million or outright utterly impossible twists of fate you see so often.

Naturally, with many movies, many highly touted movies in fact, this is absolutely not the case. In cases like that I sometimes tell myself to try to accept the movie on its own terms and try to appreciate, yes enjoy it in the way that other people do and hold my nose concerning what to me seem major weaknesses. That works sometimes, at least partly. But I still especially like the realistic movies. Even scifi can seem realistic, those are some of my favorite movies.

Say what? Fargo is on the short list of films I would watch again. 'Splain why you wouldn't and, for context, list 5-10 films that you would, pleeeeze.

162. No Country For Old Men

i genuinely do not know what this film is about.
Hearing loss. It's about hearing loss. In old men. Think about it . . . the high pitched twang of traditional country music.

Keep thinking about it.

Are you still thinking about it? Good! Now hand me the remote:

TV (Somewhat) Worth Watching:

The Chi 9/10 (Showtime) -- Extremely well done. I've seen the word "authentic" used and it certainly seems to fit. For all you suburban white folk, this show neither glorifies nor demonizes the many sad realities and constricted choices facing ordinary black folk just trying to get by in the inner city, and how they can end up with shite all over them just from having to swim through that environment.

I'll add 3 of the 6 reviews from imdb, which triangulate what anyone who hasn't ever stepped foot "in the hood" can expect. Collectively, they made me laugh. (Note: I was a P.I. who spent far more time than I should have in North Philly at 2am)

I'm from Chicago
hurtbeezy30 January 2018
This show portrays how Chicago really cam be even when you are booty in the streets. Things just go sideways, stories get crossed. Common was the perfect guy to be a part of this. One of the most realistic shows on TV right now. Ppl that don't rate this show 7 or higher is either hating because its great black show and/or Don't understand the realities of "the hood". Guys from the hood are probsbly not on imdb rating shows and writing reviews so I'll do it for them. GREAT SHOW LITERALLY

Vile
susanmarconi21 January 2018
Do we really need to hear the 10 year olds using gutter profane language, slinking through their elementary school hallways like a band of thugs using every manner of degenerate behaviour that was once at least reserved for hormonal teenagers? I don't care that you are trying to show the "real" deal about Chicago...it's just gross. It is in no way artistic or enlightening to portray children this way to try and get your point across about the identity of this city. Will not watch this trash. By the way...I love Chicago.

Character Ronnie
sdcurtis-2082028 January 2018
I will assume that the producer of the show has based the storyline from true life events... something similar to the HBO series The Wire. I would really like to see the actor that characterizes Ronnie get like a touch up on the beard. The hair on his face makes me nervous. I know its just a show, but I see older men with nice shaven beards and mustaches.Brush up on his character's appearance, I think it would really help. Thank you

^^^ Hey, everyone's got an opinion. I gave you mine: If you have access to Showtime I highly recommend you give this show a chance.

High Maintenance -- 8.5/10 -- (HBO) If you've never spent time in NYC, you may find it hard to believe some of the characters this weed delivery guy encounters. You may think they are over the top heightened for effect. I'm here to tell you they are not. This is a very wry and wisely observed show.

I'll include this one imdb review for further exposition:

Wonderfully quirky, funny and engaging
12 March 2017 | by grantssSee all my reviews

A series of short stories on the lives of everyday people living in New York. All the stories have one character in common - a pot dealer known simply as "the guy".

Wonderfully quirky and engaging series of vignettes. A great mix of drama and comedy. The short stories, of which there are one or two each episode, suck you in with likable characters in interesting situations. From there it is a leisurely ride to a great punch- line.

Writer-director-creators (and husband and wife) Katja Blichfield and Ben Sinclair do a great job at keeping the stories simple, yet profound, and the characters relatable. Sinclair also stars as The Guy, and does so very well, coming across as an entrepreneurial version of The Dude in The Big Lebowski.

My favourite episode: S1 E3, where the dog falls in love with his walker. You actually feel you are seeing the world from the dog's eyes, and it's a wonderful experience. (Incidentally, the walker is played by Yael Stone, of Orange Is The New Black fame).

The Opposition with Jordan Klepper -- 7-10 (Comedy Central) Another acorn fallen from Jon Stewart's Daily Show tree, I held off on watching this because I thought Jordan Klepper was the weakest of that bunch. I was wrong. This show is strong and getting stronger, all the more remarkable because it's a (week day) daily, not a weekly. Give it a look, decide for yourself.

i would watch Oh Brother every day. Fargo, it's one of those 1-time-only, because it loses the surprise. Kinda like The Usual Suspects, which is amazing the first time through, and kinda lame the second time around.

All Is Lost - 7/10. I've always liked movies about tragedies in the ocean so this was still enjoyable even after a rewatch. But I gotta admit that Redford's character is one chill ass dude. I mean the guy is alone in the middle of the ocean and his boat just got a watermelon size hole punched into it and is taking on water but doesn't panick or show any signs of urgency. You know he's in despair but you don't see it in him cause he's so emotionless. I don't know if the director wanted it that way or it was just a weak performance by Redford.

Blade Runner 2049 - 7/10. Was never really into the first one but after watching this one I actually went back and finished the first. Will definitely go back and rewatch this on my HT.

Wind River - 7/10. Enjoyable all around but sadly still can't escape Hollywood's over the top gun depictions.

Transformers The Last Knight - 5/10. Still haven't manage to finish it after 3 sittings. Walhberg was atleast passable in the previous one but he was just awful here.

Wonder Woman - 6/10. Meh another comic book hero/heroine fighting Nazis.

The Foreigner - 6/10. It's always fun watching Jackie kicking everyone's ass but somehow this one was on the boring side. Probably because of all the political drama and he's just getting too old.

Altered Carbon (Season 1)
- 9/10 _ Finally it's out years after I've read the book and it's sequels Broken Angels, and Woken Furies . I've always imagined how "Takeshi Kovacs" looks like and how their memories stored inside the cortical stacks are implanted to their new bodies called "sleeves" (several versions of the same character). So you're virtually immortal if your stack is not destroyed and can be resleeved to a new body if you are wealthy. Not sure if there is a link between Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, and Ghost in the Shell as some have surmised.

Hopefully the sequels will also be made into a series soon. Liking it so far.
https://www.netflix.com/watch/80097693

Episode 2
they actually show James Purefoy characters penis when he is resleeved on a backup body after being murdered.

Thank you for the review on Altered Carbon.

How was the acting, script, etc? I have high hopes for this show but am worried that it will be an incredible story with horrible acting or awesome acting but poor script writing. Is it really solid?

Altered Carbon - wiki says it was a 2002 book, written long after Ghost in the Shell (1989), Blade Runner (1982), and Megazone 23 (1985) which inspired The Matrix. Also long after William Gibson's Neuromancer (1984) and others in the first wave of cyberpunk novels in the 80s.

I haven't read the book. Based on episodes 1-2 it's definitely influenced by its predecessors with an added dose of film noir and hard-luck detective stories. The lead character would get along with the book version of Mike Hammer.

I'm enjoying it so far. Although the setting reminds me of Blade Runner and GtS it doesn't feel like a cookie-cutter copy. The characters are interesting and the acting is decent. The writing is fine and not too predictable despite following some tropes of the gumshoe genre.

Beyond Skyline (2017) 7/10.

This is a continuation of the first movie with a slight overlap at the start of the film. It's a pretty good movie considering the budget they had to work on this. It has alot of CGI but was done pretty well. If you liked the first movie Skyline but wanted to know how the story ends, this is worth a watch.
