Free Solo - 10/10 - documentary about the dude who free solo'd El Cap and wow it was just a cool documentary with some unreal scenery. And it's just mind blowing what that dude actually did and how he has the balls to even think about doing that shit. Really cool. It was on Nat Geo tonight with no commercials.

HBO documentary Leaving Neverland 8/10

Hard to watch, includes salacious play by play interviews with one of the kids who is now in his 20s. Of course true MJ believers won't listen to it. I just feel icky after watching it what a sleeze.

You know what I'd kind of like to see? A reality show that's a combination of "Forged In Fire" and "Truck Night In America".

Imagine it... 4 teams of redneck mechanics are brought to a junk yard with a bunch of scrap steel and spare parts. They are given some old rusty 1980's era pickup trucks, and are given 6 hours to modify them to compete in various challenges. I'd imagine that they would need to mix up the challenges to keep in interesting... one week, they might need to build a mud bog dragster, while another week they need to build a monster truck capable of crushing a car.

The 2 teams that do the best in the first challenge get two hours to rebuild their trucks to compete in a timed race of an obstacle course to win.

I'd give bonus points if the show had cameo appearances from either Doug Marcaida (new catch phrase: "It will crush!"), John Force, or Tanner Foust. Because, hey... why not.

For your consideration... Truck Forge in America. An easy 10/10, brought to you by the Manly Man network! (formerly known as the History Channel)

junkyard wars.

Kinda, but this would be a bit more redneck. A bit less engineering, and a bit more racing. I'd think that the cameo appearances from folks like NASCAR racers and country music stars would hopefully keep people other than gearheads interested in the show.

Skyscraper, HBO 7/10

Good popcorn adventure action flick with the Rock, Neve Cambell and a bunch of foreigners who you have never heard of but that arent all that bad, good villain type villain.

Implausible stunts, superhuman performances but then again, The Rock. Building is really the co-star. Enjoy it for what it is.

Yeah, this is an easy to watch one where you can laugh at nearly all the stunts.

I'm trying hard to slog through Star Trek" Enterprise but the show really goes out of it's way to make the journey as difficult as possible. To be clear: I think social justice is an important thing but I don't watch sci fi for that reason. I want to experience the wonders of unlimited exploration, the awesomeness of open space, not watch alien race after alien race that exhibit all have the same flaws we humans do, or worse.

I got through almost four episodes last night. One was at least watchable: a riff on the old "marooned and running out of air" theme. It certainly didn't bring anything new or interesting to the table but the two guys at least have charisma and did their best to make it work. I didn't pay enough attention to understand why the wreckage of the Enterprise appeared to be strewn across an asteroid. I was surfing the web though most of it.

Another was a straight up "no means no" story. A Vulcan so deliberately creepy that I laughed out loud whenever he was on the screen tries a mind meld with the hot science officer. When she tells him to stop he doesn't, and eventually gets the "no means no" tongue lashing from Archer. Of course - the Vulcan throws him across the room like a rag doll without any consequence or explanation. I didn't know Vulcans have super human strength. Learn something new every day.

Then we have a "hunting is bad" episode, again with laughable aliens dressed in human hunting camouflage. They're basically "despicable" human hunters with a ridge up their nose. Archer follows a mysterious woman around, and the hot science officer Vulcan scolds him, for some reason, by saying "Would you be following your vision if it was a scantily clad male?" lol what the fuck is that even about?

Even a episode that should be fun, with the Enterprise crew outsmarting the dopey Ferengi who are looting their ship continually grinds to a creepy halt when one of the Frerengi takes a shine to (again) the hot Vulcan science officer and keeps fondling her ear. lolololol what in the actual fuck is going on here? My internet cut out during this one and I never bothered to restart Netflix so I didn't finish it.

Maybe I really do need to forget this show and give Babylon 5 another shot. I don't know if I can listen to that crap theme song one more time.

Umbrella Academy (1st half of series): 9/10
(2nd half): 6.5/10

the beginning was promising. lots of stuff to pull you in.
by episode 6 (?), it falls off the rails. the Time Commission runs on 1950s efficiency and security (or lack there of)?!

in the ending, the verbal fight between vanya and Mary J Blige seemed forced.
wtf vanya taking that stance?

and the show didn't answer the question of how did Hardgraves know?
I guess that's to pull you in for Season2.

I didn't like it that much. Too much whining by the characters with a relatively predictable use of time travel

Aquaman 4/10. Oh boy this movie is lifeless. How do they keep fucking up?

It reminded me of Tomb Raider of all things.

They Shall Not Grow Old -- 10/10

I fell out of the movie going habit after the whole "see a movie a day, each day, for $10/month" thing went belly up. It's been hard to get used to paying full price again. But after seeing a trailer for this movie, I had to go. I wasn't disappointed.

Apollo 11 - saw at the theater last week, it was everything I imagined it could be and more. Astoundingly magnificent and epic in it's retelling of the Apollo 11 lunar mission and all the hard work and dedication that went into it. 9/10, one of the finest documentaries I have seen.

The Last Dragon - Sho'Nuff this gem exceeded all expectations. Across the board great humor and writing, nicely acted throughout. Everything about this movie was excellent!

Watch the trailer in the link above. Every single frame of film is genuine footage from WW1 from the British Imperial War Museum, speed corrected and often deftly colorized, with speech matched with the help of forensic lip readers. The impact is immeasurable. It's an experience you won't soon forget, a labor of love and tribute from Peter Jackson.

Ten/ten baby!

In the theaters at least, there's a fascinating 30 minute add on after the film about the process of making it.

At long last, you don't have to wait for the DVD for the Director's Cut!

Never Goin' Back (2018) 7/10

Watched last night. First and only movie created by female who also wrote and produced. She's also an actress, though not in this (but her full grown daughter had a bit part). In the 11 minute extra semi-documentary on the DVD she explains that a lot of it was based on her life as a (probably) teenager in small Texas town, which is the setting of the movie. It's strength is the fact that the two female protagonist young waitresses were steadfastly inseparable best friends throughout, which mirrors the experience of the director/writer. Even so, the story sequence is outlandish. Well, it's just campy. It kind of sends itself up. Pretty girls! Goofy guys. Bizarre action and dialog, often chock full of slang. Director said a lot of what went on in the movie was taken from her own actual experiences. Oh, but she/they made up stuff!

If you are or were into any two of... Texas, poor, drugs, hip hop, partying, being wild, arrested, desperately dreamed of getting out of a place, this might be for you. Um, it's a comedy!

Creed 2 - 8/10 - basically another "classic" Rocky flick that is completely predicitable but it was still fun. And damn, that Rocky tune gets me every time I love that damn song. Even the tune where they play like 5 notes of it, I love that shit. The movie just gets me pumped up.

Captain Marvel 6.5/10

Nothing wrong with this movie but that's the problem, there was nothing great either. Extremely basic origin movie with basically no unique deviation from the hundreds of other of these type of movies. You could see every twist coming within the first few minutes. As the first female Marvel superhero movie I was hoping for more substance and a unique vibe but it was very formulaic.

Just watched The Hate You Give. Great movie about the police and excessive force against minorities. I would give it 8.5 out of 10. A bit preachy in spots, but generally on point. The female lead (Amandla Stenberg, played Rue in the Hunger Games) was excellent.

The Dawn Wall - 8/10, great documentary about climbing in Yosemite, watched it twice this weekend (I'm sick so I had lots of time on my hands). The 2 main guys are so likeable - they carry the movie just by themselves. Got choked up a couple of times.

I watched that yesterday. Watched Free Solo the week before. Overall i liked The Dawn Wall better. The free climb is not as scary since you are roped off, but i'm pretty sure they took a much more challenging route than the guy in Free Solo did. Plus the grueling nature of 19 days on a wall. I do agree that the 2 characters are very likable.
And when he goes back to his partner and wont finish without him is a very easy to get choked up scene.

I agree. But i dont think he would have tried the route the 2 guys in The Dawn Wall did. He would of died on pitch 15 lol
I'm sure there are plenty of paths he would have died climbing, which is the reason he strategically picked the path he did. No matter how hard the other paths are, what he did without any harness is infinitely more impressive than anything done with a harness. Like it's not even in the comparable realm IMO. It's comparing his giant watermelon sized nuts to the pea sized nuts of regular people.

Great documentary. definitely recommend it even if you don't climb because as Pur said its beautiful with a pucker factor of 10. It's on prime now as well for $3.99. But nat geo shows repeats a lot.

Also if you liked that check out Valley Uprising its available on Netflix and Amazon prime for .99

"Generations of beatniks and madmen take up a life of rock climbing on the massive granite walls of Yosemite National Park." And the park rangers don't like them.
