Managed to get around to seeing Parasite. I can't say I know much of anything about Korean culture overall let alone films. My wife and I really enjoyed Parasite though. About 15-20 minutes in we both agreed that the movie was going to be good. The time spent getting to know the family definitely gave me vibes of the Godfather in regards to having some patience and letting the audience get to know the characters a bit on their home turf. We took a pause / snack break right before the basement and were both speculating on what was going to happen to drive the story and bring us into oscar territory. We mostly enjoyed the direction the movie took, though it would have been funnier if they went fullHamlet.

Definitely deserving of praise! 9/10

Generation War

A German World War II TV miniseries in three parts, commissioned by a German public broadcasting organization ZDF.
Berlin, 1941. Five friends are eager to experience the adventure that will change the face of Europe .They go out to war and promise each other to be back for Christmas.

This is an historical and social story not a war film per se. The three men are comprised of two brothers from a typically male dominated German family who are off to fight for the Fatherland, well one is anyway. The third male friend is a "Judin". There are two woman in the group, one develops as a nurse and the second has theatrical ambitions.

I'm not accustomed to watch and root for the German Wehrmacht, ie, the two brothers: it was difficult but not impossible. The Iron Cross does come to mind but then who couldn't be drawn in by a Sam Peckinpah's down your throat adventure.

This project is very well acted and produced. German culture, Soviet uniforms and all armaments are perfectly detailed as you'd expect. I haven't even finished the third episode yet here I am writing down my pleasure at this drama.

It unusually portrays a society from the inside. The irony is that for all the exposure of realistic wartime life next to nothing addresses what these common folk, next-door-neighbor types, actually thought about invading the rest of the European world.

Only one comment is offered, an omen perhaps. Preparing for battle somewhere in Russia one soldier wonders why they are there . Another says, quoting The Fuehrer, we are defending our borders. A third finished the thought revealing the shallowness of the entire war. " The Russians can say the same thing ".

8.5

My son, who is a WWII nerd, absolutely LOVES this series/special.

Mitchells Vs. the Machines - 3/10

Maybe I am too old to be watching this but I really don't get what all the hoopla is over this movie. Yeah the animation is fine but I found it rather boring and I didnt laugh once. This is really what everyone on Netflix is watching? Yeesh

Eventually you run out of things to watch and become less picky.

Tenet 5/10 - It lost me 1/4 way in, the whole forward/backward concept are too much for my pea size brain. I even turned on CC and is not helping much. Oh that lego weapon thingy at the end.... it is a joke right.

I wanted to like this movie the whole time I was watching it but when it finished I realized it just sucked. Many of the action sequences were actually boring to watch for the most part, the finale in particular just seemed dull with the basically invisible enemies firing on people as they fought people going in different directions in time.

I didn't try to hard to figure it out because in the beginning the scientist lady says something like "Its magic BS, don't think to hard." and Nolan said it wasn't based on science either in an interview. If Nolan was to lazy to write it to be fun to watch or to actually make sense I don't feel like I should be putting in the effort to bridge the gap.

I have mixed feelings about many Nolan films but they're usually exciting visual spectacles or full of style that overwhelms their flaws at least on the first watch. But this one didn't work at all for me.

Robert de Niro opined on that cinema puzzle. When asked how he selected a film in which to appear, he said ( perhaps quoting Nicholas Cage ) If they pay my fee I'm there.

de Niro and Nick Cage seem like they always show up though. Bruce Willis acts like he's just gets out of bed and does one quarter ass take and leaves. I can't believe people keep hiring him, he's been in some real turds lately. Its gotten to be if I see his name attached to something I was otherwise interested in I lose interest.

Pretty much everything Waititi touches is fantastic. WWDITS is just phenomenally great show (and movie).

So far he is on a roll. Everything he does is good stuff. Looking forward to Wellington Paranormal, plus I read he is involved in a few other projects. I hope he doesn't get stretched too thin.

Looking forward to it? Isn't it on like season 3? it's pretty good overall. In my opinion probably the weakest of his offerings but still pretty damned good overall.

Ahhhhhhhhhh. It's worth the watch. It's a little too "New Zealand", but you get used to it pretty quickly.

I actually liked the movie in NZ better than the show in Staten Island overall. I also just saw Taiki signed up to play blackbeard in an HBO pirate comedy. Definitely will watch that as soon as it comes out.

Oxygen 6/10. Pretty decent if you're into sci-fi though half the reveal was obvious from the first 10 minutes. Lots of things that could have been done better like the subplot.

Need for Speed 6/10. It was entertaining and I liked the girl and cars which made me biased.

Things Heard & Seen 4/10, would give it a 6/10 if it was that STUPID ending like a 1st year student would do better than that fking ending.

A typical moving to a old county home kinda thriller/horror movie, pretty much a good mindless movie with a still hot Amanda. All is well till the last 5min.

Irresistible(2020) - Political satire movie from Jon Stewart w/ Steve Carell and Rose Byrne about helping to elect a small town democrat for mayor in a conservative town. We get some chuckles from OUT OF TOUCH LIBERAL ELITES....Trying to FARM?! Some low hanging comedic fruit which did make me laugh a couple of times honestly. Vibes of "For Richer or Poorer" from my youth in those moments. While it is mostly on the nose with it's commentary, some of the characters did still make me laugh, like the cafe owner.

I thought it was better than the Rotten Tomatoes score reflected. 7/10
when i looked this up i thought, ermagherd, a Jon Stewart political satire film?!? I got to watch this NAU !

And so i did.

Irresistible - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9076562/

with Steve Carell, whom i loved in The Big Short, and Mackenzie Davis as Hot Girl. Also Rose Byrne is in a small portion of the film.

In rural Minnesota, a viral video emerges of a good'ol , star-spangled marine/farmer/war veteran arguing with the evil local councilman, and Democrat campaign manager Gary Zimmer (Carell) decides to make him his poster boy for a gubernatorial run with the end goal of flipping the state.
He descends on the sleepy midwestern town to find it's beyond quaint, giving him additional challenges to his scheme. Also present shortly thereafter is his offscreen nemesis, the pretty-darn-good Byrne playing the part of the devil-incarnate Republican campaign manager. They rush to the polls, unaware that a big surprise waits for them.

I thought i would love this film, and instead i didn't love it at all.

First off, Carrell here is much less focused .. tbh i don't like Steve Carrell at all, i was surprised at his performance in The Big Short, but here he's back to acting skills of The Office.
He's supposed to be a sly, experienced, cynical and thoroughly successful campaign manager, but the film goes out of its way to at the same time paint him as an idiot.
The film is overly long, slow, badly paced, and constantly veers between comedy and biting satire, without settling into either camp.
The other character with the most screentime, the Colonel Sgt Major Terminator Jack "America" Hastings, starts as a fierce, fire-driven person whom we want more of, but immediately becomes a timid, incompetent yokel, and loses any charisma he could have had.
TONS of minor characters have 1-2 minutes at most and they are also all the same "what is a teevee?" character.
Byrne is so good in the part of the evil witch that it almost grates against how mediocre everything else is.

spoilers below
after 1 1/2 hours into the film, the ultimate insult; SHAZAM! and it was all a ruse, i mean not a sinister plot, but more like a Home Alone-level ruse, where all the town is complacent into a scheme to fleece the two campaigns of as much money as they can, to save the poor children or something. Both ridiculously unlikely and completely inappropriate to the tone set insofar.

Is this film a comedy? Is it a satire? Is it realistic, or exaggerated? Is it a love story, slapstick, is it a drama.
It's crap.
Decently made and not overall terrible crap but a film that fails on some very basic aspects of filmmaking. Keep in mind that, while you may be occasionally amused, you will be overall disappointed.

My vote: 6/10

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street - 10/10

HBO documentary on the history of Sesame Street. If you grew up watching the show on PBS it's a helluva a stroll down memory lane. It was really well done and pretty comprehensive. The people behind the creation and propagation of the show are just amazing and basically heroes.

The Room - 2/10. Not terrible, but not great either.
2 years ago I invited friends over to watch it. Warned them it was supposed to be so bad it was good. After 20 minutes I had a revolt on my hands. Guess I didn't get them drunk fast enough. I had a backup movie Get Out. They loved it.

I just watched

Hot Property - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3515318/

A misunderstood film with a very low IMDb rating, *very* few reviews, and just skirting the border between excellent and shit. (borders are weird, they do that)

The very hot Myanna Buring is Melody, a London corporate spy who, despite her successes, gets sacked because her employer is fed up with her antics and extreme lifestyle.
Finding herself penniless, she needs to come up with ways to make money - anything .. as long as it's not "normal".

Let's get it out of the way; the real star of the show is the editing. If you like composite visual style, you will love this film. This is probably also why the low rating.
The acting is good, the writing is good, the dialogue is meh. For some reason filmwriters just don't get what vapid, rich snobs are actually like.
Buring is stunning, just looking at her for 90 minutes is enough of an excuse to sit down to this film.
if you thought that Debbie Harry was a goddess, you need to watch this film now.
The story is a bit confused, the script isn't great. It's a film that delivers visually but you have to accept that the story is secondary to the visuals and acting.

Despite these faults, i found it to me far more interesting that, say, Enter The Void.

I would give it an honest vote of 7.5/10 - with a better script it could have been excellent.

and the very opposite

Truth And Justice - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5593384/

a *very* traditional film, that rigorously follows filmmaking rules, to the point where it becomes boring.
In Estonian, with subs easily available, it's a film adaptation of the (apparently quite famous locally) estonian novel of the same name. Some time in the 1800s, a young man with wife buys a small farm. The farm is not ideally placed, but it's all he could afford, and he fully intends to turn it into a little paradise.

Except that, you know, REALITY doesn't work like that.

Nothing particularly tragic happens, it's just that he fails because it was a long shot, failure was to be expected. And so he grows old and bitter, he sacrifices his integrity, his morals.

Absolutely NOT something i find interesting, thank you. I already have misery in my life, do not need more of it. YMMV.

current rating on IMDb: 8.3/10 (but probably heavily inflated by partisan votes), you would probably like this if you like sombre period pieces that are very down to earth and depict the daily struggle of the common man. However, if you are just feeling nery and/or snob, and want to increase your snob-o-meter rating by watching some original language nordic film, there is much better to choose from.

my vote: why would someone watch this/10

i'm watching an interesting TV series, for once:

Wayne (2019) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7765404/

Hey why is it that every time IMDb updates their UI, it becomes worse?

So, Wayne is .. uh ... it's about Wayne, a kid that's both quiet and psychotic, both weird and also totally normal.
Have you ever watched a show and the protagonist has a confrontation of sorts, and you think "if I was there, THIS is what i would do" ?
Well, in Wayne, Wayne does just that. It does the thing that *you* think you would do.

just started S1E2, tentative vote of 7/10

Let me make you an example of what RT is.

The Blues Brothers - 73% fresh. Randomly picked reviewer who said the film is rotten, Desmon Ryan of the Philli Inquirer.
Films he has critiqued as "rotten": The Godfather p. 2, My Cousin Vinnie, They Live, Lost Boys, Short Circuit ..
Films he has praised as fresh: Superman IV The Quest For Peace.

You cannot help when a serial idiot sneaks in to rotten tomatoes. He, veritably, is one of the rotten tomatoes that RT tries to warn you about.

I've probably seen Blues Brothers 200 times. Somehow through all of that somehow I recently stumbled on the extended version which I had no idea existed.

Oh boy, that Elwood at work scene.
