Saw Shang-Chi in the theatre today; I wasn't impressed for an MCU movie to kick off their 'phase 4'.

Might've been issues with the theatre I saw it in, but much of the choreographed action sequences with individuals were dark, washed out and blurry. I found myself wondering what the hell I was watching. Poor lighting in filming or something, I don't know.

There were some pretty visuals and scenery, whether real or digital, but much of the 'creature' CGI looked like cinematics from a 1995 video game. They weren't very realistic-looking or convincing.

Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh are both +1, and Awkwafina didn't entirely ruin her role. Simu Liu was good in the main role, seemed natural in it. Most of the people in the movie don't have superpowers, it's more like a wushu movie in that regard.

5/10 overall

Free Guy - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6264654/reference

shot in bostewn !
Is the story of a NPC in a GTA-like videogame that one day falls in love with a player; said player is also the avatar of a girl who IRL was a coder for Bad Dude, who is the owner of the company that hosts the videogame. OH THE HUMANITY.
Obviously the clock is ticking because reasons, new game, idk idc and the girl must find the hidden code which Bad Guy stole.
Reynolds is upset when he discovers he is a NPC, but in the end he becomes a hero and because reasons, also everyone in the world (a'la Truman Show) loves him, bad guy goes to IRL jail, etc.

Ok so .. not HORRIBLE, but also, i'm not sure that a target audience exists, for this kind of story. Probably my 80yo mom, if she understood the references - but not fully - might like it as it is. Otherwise for everyone else, it's soppy, it's a stupid love story that is extremely unrelatable, and as an action film it fucking sucks. So if you wanted to know if you can polish a turd, the answer is, you totally can.

I'm happy to watch a romantic film, hell, i'll watch the fuck out of Pretty Woman, but man, i don't think there is a single human being that i would recommend this film to.

so .. my vote is.. 7(?)/10 ??

i mean .. it's well made, but .. who the hell was this story written for.
Watch Boss Level instead.

The Card Counter

Its so sad to see superb acting get pummeled by bad direction like this.
It could have been one for the classics.
I have no idea what schrooms the director was on.

Too bad.

As a huge Sopranos fan, Many Saints of Newark was so disappointing. David Chase wrote so many amazing and charismatic characters on Sopranos, but even Johnny Boy and Junior who were really interesting people in the flashbacks in the series were just one dimensional and soulless in this. The only characters I really liked were Tony's mom and Dickie Moltisanti's father and uncle. Dickie was such a boring character though, it's like they were trying to re-create Sonny from A Bronx Tale but they swung and missed hard. Story was all over the place too with a lot of time spent on the riots and a rival black gang in a storyline that kind of went nowhere. Also lots of cheap fan service with callbacks to the series in place of interesting character development. Junior especially was just an angry bumbling moron, much moreso than even when he was suffering from dementia in the later years of the series. And the movie told almost nothing interesting about Tony. I guess that'll be left for the sequel. Overall I'd give it a 4/10: too much member berries, not enough interesting storytelling. And most of that 4 points come from the brilliant performances from Ray Liotta and Vera Farmiga.

So there I was, watching Get Shorty season 3.
April was riding Miles pretty hard.
Quick Cut: She's on the toilet. I have no idea why.

My hypothesis, she was draining semen.
Is that a thing women do? Do they drain semen on the toilet?

I never fucked a girl sans condom.

Watched Watermelon Man (1971, starring Godfrey Cambridge, directed by Melvin Van Peebles, RIP) 7/10 over the last few days. Especially like the ending. White bigot mysteriously and suddenly becomes black.

Cambridge was really something. After 3 years of medical school he dropped out to pursue an acting career, supporting himself with myriad odd jobs, eventually getting roles and also becoming one of the premier stand up comedians in the country. Died of heart attack at 43!

Out of boredom and desperation I watched all of Get Shorty. Its kinda needlessly brutal and violent, I guess they feel like they have to compete with other series for the viewers attention. Its mostly a show about bad people doing very bad things, and none of them are really likeable, but its still quite watchable.
They left a boatload of plot threads hanging at the end of season 3, however thanks to lockdown there has been no firm declaration on a season 4.

5/10 if you dont like violence on your tv.
10/10 if you do like violence.
Its extremely well-written and acted.

Dr. Death - Peacock Network - 8/10

Quite enjoyable and well written/acted 8-part crime drama series on the infamous doctor Christopher Duntsch. Was good to see Christian Slater and Alec Baldwin in this and both did a fantastic job of playing against each other. Timelines definitely got a bit hard to follow as this jumped around quite a bit and was not linear. Overall a fantastic show and I was unaware of this guy and his crimes.

Episode 6 of The Squid Games. Best so far. Hard hitting episode. That was really well done.

I hope the last three are as good.

Mrs Ned & I finished Squid Game last night. That was my favorite show in a long time. Be patient with episode 9 - it's slow for a while, but ends in a very satisfying way (at least for the wife & me)

This was my favorite episode.

Squid Game is my (and probably many others' given the popularity) first experience with Korean TV shows and it was really good. Anyone have other suggestions?

If you haven't seen this movie yet, and are a fan of zombie movies what are you waiting for? It is rated as the best zombie movie of all time. I agree.

Who was Free Guy written for? Ryan Reynolds. He is quickly becoming this generations Gene Wilder.
Just like Gene the script barely matters, every show is about his charisma on screen.
And just like Gene Wilder back in his day the opinions are mixed on if that is enough, or even something we want.
What is certain is that when it does all come together, a good script, a good director, and a supporting cast he works well with, he is able to create the sort of magic that keeps us coming back to the silver screen.

I finished it. I thought the ending was pretty good. Hard show to wrap up really but they didn't blow it, which many do. It was satisfying enough. Overall though an excellent show - I mean the sets were great, the costumes, the whole concept. It broke down the human condition well. I thought the VIP's were a bit much, just the way they talked. Since Queen's Gambit no other show made me want to binge as fast and as much as this one.

This was my favorite episode.

Yep, after finishing it that was definitely the best episode overall still.

I'd like to find some more Korean shows too. Hoping people give some recs.

This is not Korean, but a Hong Kong film - Infernal Affairs - if you haven't seen it I recommend it. It's the film The Departed by Scorcese was based on, and it's definitely better than the Hollywood adaptation.

When I was 12 Point Break seemed fuckin awesome.
It has not aged as well as other films, like Terminator 2.

I'm halfway through the Squid Games. I think it's overall quite good. But apparently the subtitles/dubbing translations are off and unless you speak Korean, you are losing out on some more refined and better dialogue

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-58787264

Someone is going to have to make an actual game show out of this concept, minus the killing obviously. I'll bet that it would be popular!
