Yeah sometimes I see old movies and their special effects seem much more impressive, considering how limited the hardware processing power was at the time. Now they throw millions of dollars on special effects and we just go "meh".

i know you guys hate me for always ripping on these films, but consider;
no hate here my friend. I learn a little every time I read one of your reviews and that's just about the highest compliment I can pay you.

I also admire your raw but well-written and uniquely unbiased and unabashed style. I just feel a little bad for your subjects at times. You are obviously a cinematic aficionado if not a bonafide pro.

However I have noticed that you've started to try to find what positives you can even it might not sit well with you to do that and I think that takes a certain strength of will.

Keep posting here DD. We might get a little pissed at you from time to time, especially us fanbois. But we're called fanbois for a reason. Rock on brother.

Because i liked Cyrano .. i briefly went through the filmography of one Steve Martin, who in 1987 had a fair bit of success with the film Roxanne, itself a reimagining of the Cyrano plot.
And i saw a film that i had not watched, but it was recommended by a friend with whom i shared a passion for old B&W films, mostly those of Peter Cushing / Christopher Lee etc .. think House Of Long Shadows.

Anyway, the aforementioned, is Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083798/reference/

a pretty bizzarre 1982 film starring Steve Martin as gumshoe Rigby Reardon, shot in B&W, and many of the scenes between Rigby and his antagonists are actually bits stolen from old period Noir films, interlaced with Martin's own B&W scenes.
To be honest, this is gimmicky and often would have been just better to do a normal B&W spoof - better results, and probably the same cost.
Now, if you were an adult in the early 80s, you probably could tell what film each bit is from, and that must have been awfully clever; but now that they are consigned to the past, it doesnt work anymore. Like someone in 30 years trying to watch Dont Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood.
The story is what you expect from a Noir parody, and because it serves primarily the gimmick described above, it's not really good.
I would not recommend this if not for scholarly reasons, and even then, it's mediocre.

Project Adam 2022 - 3/10

This is a pretty well worn time travel trope with a very wide sentimental streak. So not much to recommend it. I would classify it as quasi-scifi but definitely not a spoof. Worth watching if you're a Ryan Reynolds fan i suppose.

Trying to watch Panama 2022 but the ersatz he-man profusion of testosterone might be a deal breaker and I'm only 10min in (after 5 minutes in intro credits - no overlay on the story either, just like a dozen production companies and misc. staff and cast). I'm going to try to give it a chance since I'm assuming that the broad historical strokes are more or less accurate. Plus that was a pretty fucked political situation post Iran-contra - if you remember that shit with Papa Bush. Oh, and f***ing Mel Gibson is in it (not a plus). When did he get certified "re-educated?"

Inventing Anna - 5/10

This really didn't need to be 9 episodes long. I didn't much care for the first episode but it did get more interesting with the 2nd episode. However... I found that midway through the series that I was getting a bit annoyed. Mid way through the series I got the point, it had already been well established what type of person she was and it just seemed like they were milking it, the overall plot was moving along at a snails pace. I understand under the context as to why the reporter was under a bunch of stress to make sure she got her facts 100% correct but they were making it seem like she was trying to unravel some sort of complicated murder. I'm not going to call it "bad" but it could've been cut down to 6 episodes max.

The Usual Suspects - 6/10

This is the definition of a movie I should've seen when it first came out versus in 2022. It does some clever things and I can see why people like it but I just think other movies have done it better since then. I found some of the main characters to be a little hacky and one dimensional but given the context of the plot they really didn't need much character development with some of these guys so I will give it a pass.

My favorite part, although very short, is when they're interrogating Fenster. Canyahearmeintheback?

Interrogation Cop : What are you saying?
Fenster : I said he'll flip you.
Interrogation Cop : He'll what?
Fenster : Flip you. Flip ya for real.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) 6 / 10

I almost gave up on it within the first 5 minutes because of all the political debates/ arguments they were throwing in there pretty much non-stop, but I figured I'd give it another 10 minutes to see if they would focus on what typical slasher films should be. Thankfully they decided to then turn and focus on making it an actual horror movie.

Thankfully Leatherface eventually shows up and all the hipsters stop talking.
This movie had 1 good scene and even that scene was kind of ruined by all the hipsters doing stupid hipster shit.

That movie was BAD. Like REALLY bad.

That guy is as pretentious as some of the most pretentious movies try to be
ok well, i have to agree there, because, yeah, he is super pretentious. The guy is into art films, but, he understands film. And while someone who is "in the biz" has a skewed appreciation, he can tell when a film is BAD. I know i won't like most of his recommendations, but i also know if he tells me a film is shit, eh, chances are i won't like it either.

It may be so terrible that it is worth watching to see how terrible it is. I believe it's only like 80 minutes too so it's not long at all. And you can witness the 1 good scene that is even ruined by the stupid hipster shit lol.

Nah - I have mountains of movies/shows/documentaries that I want to watch still. I'm way behind in many podcasts too. I can't waste time on stuff that is just horrible.

I couldn't even get myself to go beyond 30 minutes of the new Scream. Horror doesn't mean horrify people with bad acting.

MIB (men in black) III - 10/10

I wasn't crazy about II or III originally, but it really does pay to watch the good stuff more than once. Of course neither compare to the first MIB. Tommy Lee Jones is just such a classic in that one. And Vincent D'Onofrio is the distilled essence of the concept "meme." But the alien in III (the nice one), though he comes off as being a bit saccharine at first ends up being quite darling. And while it's yet another time travel story, I think it works really well.

Woha, ok but 10/10? I also liked it, i wouldn't say it's better than MIB1, i would say that, it's different. And AS GOOD, in my opinion. MIB 1 is a much simpler film, MIB 3 tries to go a bit more indepth. It doesn't seem as good as MIB 1 because MIB 1 is a veeeery simple film, and, hey, nothing wrong with that, but you gotta admit that it's difficult to write "depth" for characters like K.

Halloween Kills 3 / 10

I was so disappointed on just how bad this movie was. Writing, plot, acting........ just all such an unbelievable mess.

I'm glad I waited for it to hit HBO Max instead of paying money to rent it.
