Hell if you want to get technical about it, what 1/4 does a 350Z run? RX-8? How about any other sub 30k pocket rocket for sale on the market today. How many of them run a 13.9? I'd imagine two or three. A car that runs these times for 21K is nothing short of amazing, I don't care what anyone says about the looks.

I just remember the video of that SRT-4 completely decimating a WRX from about a 10-20MPH roll until the Neon driver decides to let off. It just shows how much useable power the SRT-4 has and how ungodlike the WRX is.

Going fast? The fun is taking on the turns on a race track. Going fast iprimarily translate to just brute HP and gear ratio. Where's the fun on that??

As soon as Dodge redesigned the Neon and make it look more respectable, I'd think about it.
Now if Dodge makes a coupe out of it, I'd might buy it.

Turns do nothing for me either, either does shifting... for me all the fun comes from my human competition.

If I were buying a compact, this would be it. No questions asked. (Unless Chevy puts out the Nomad concept with the supercharged ecotec)

It's hard to criticize a well-priced car that can smoke a number of higher-priced sports cars (the Honda S2000 and Nissan 350Z come to mind).
Considering that the 350z has similar numbers I wouldn't call it "smoked"!

You mean mashing the gas and letting your slushbox take over

Its still a Neon and you still can't polish a turd.

A turd that'll wax a $30,000 car from a roll

Yeah, because only real racers race from a roll

Who cares what your car can do from a roll? If you're already moving, driver skill is basically eliminated from the equation and it's nothing more than a contest of who has a better power to weight ratio and/or gearing. What's the fun in that?

What's the fun in that? It separates the truly powerful cars from the wannabes. 5-60 mph is FAR more valuable than 0-60, it tells you whether the car actually has balls or not.

Street start, 5-60 mph: 5.7 sec

Let's seen an S2000 do that.

From their own S2000 review:

Street start, 5?60 mph: 6.9 sec

and unfortunately how much of a hinderance AWD is from a roll, I'd still take an Evo over an SRT though

Exactly, I can't imagine why Flyermax brought driver skill into a statement that was comparing how fast *cars* are, not people

the srt-4 is not a neon anymore... i agree this is not the car for you if your looking for class or quality interior and whatnot. but it IS ungodly fast. i would never drive one... but at the same time, i would never race one either...

Last time I checked it was *people* who drove cars
The SRT4 is a nice car for the price, and is definitely fast, regardless of the fact that it's a Neon. However, given the fact that it is a Neon, and it's still FWD, there are plenty of performance cars I'd chose over the SRT4. Still a very tempting car for the price though... It really doesn't have any competitors in its price class. Not from an acceleration standpoint anyway... Handling may be a different story, however.

Yeah, that's the only thing keeping me from really really considering one. I've had my fill of fast FWD cars, I'd love to move to RWD or AWD once I'm done building my project car up. There's just too many limitations of FWD...

I don't see how any manufacturer can top the SRT-4. It truly is the best sport compact car to buy right now. I fail to see how DC can even sell a car like that at such a low pricepoint. And it's a complete package as well, with a chassis/suspension to match its power.

They can do it because it's a Neon. If the SRT4 were based off any other platform but their million-seller econocar, it would cost significantly more.

Exactly. The Neon is a dirt cheap Avis rental car.

Wonder how many of the naysayers here cream themselves at the thought of a supercharged civic or a blah rsx. I personally wouldn't buy it but you gotta respect one of the fastest stock fwd cars made for under 20k. Kudos to Dodge for bringing out an awesome price/performance proposition, even if it is just a neon.

Better yet, why not the AWD 300HP variant of the 6?

a car that manages to prove itself time and time again in grassroots and amatuer racing series year after a year? A car that won so many times that SCCA had to make its own class?

Sure it has a crappy interior and shoddy build quality. But its a performance car, as long as the chassis is tight and mechanicals are reliable (which I don't doubt given Chrylser's respected turbo-4cyl history), its surprising thats its in its current price point.

Funny how I see everyone talk about the SRT-4 being fast and handling well (gasp!), yet I see a whole lot more S2Ks and 350zs and even G35 coupes out on the street, and this is in SOCAL.

I dont really see who the target consumers of this car is. Kids who have their parents buy them a new car won't be getting this car when their parents find out its a faster than normal car and insurance rates are through the roof for a 16yr old. And those who can afford to buy a car with their own money will either 1) buy a more luxurious and comfortable car in the same price range, 2) spend more to get a more socially respectable car, or 3)spend that money to put together their own fast car.
